Warren to IR, Burgess reinstated

I just got home from work and turned the TV to Total Access where I learned of Warren on IR and sure enough, Pats hater extraordinaire Marshall Faulk was projecting gloom and doom saying "Bill Belichick must be scratching his head right now", sure Faulk...

When Jarvis Green might well be an upgrade over both of your starters at end, Faulk has a point.

I agree that we don't need to sign a DL, other than perhaps someone to compete for the OLB/DE position (the position Burgess held last year).

We have Warren, Wilfork, Wright, Lewis and Pryor as locks at this point. Five defensive linemen get almost all the reps (not counting the Burgess position).

The question is who best fills the last DL spot. The choices are Brace, Weston, Deaderick, Richard and Love. Let the competition begin. The winner makes the 53, some make the Practice Squad, one or more could make the IR, some could get cut.

I'm all for sticking with the 3-4, if they go 4-3 then they just wasted a 2nd round pick on Spikes.

How so? Spikes is a Mike LB and Mayo would be able to play Sam or Will.

How do you figure that? He played in a 4-3 in college. That's all the Gators ran during his career.

THE COMPETITION
There are five.
Brace, Weston, Deaderick, Richard and Love.

My guess is that Brace has had a hammy and makes the 53. If Brace goes on PUP or IR, then Weston seems most likely to make the 53.

I don't have strong feelings here since Weston and Deaderick would be fine on the Practice Squad, freeing up the roster spot for a free agent or for use at another position.

Wilfork, Wright, and Pryor are DT's and don't really work as 3-4 DE's. On that list, Warren and Lewis are the only two who could be considered 3-4 DE's. Brace is also a guy who would work better as a DT, though he did get some reps early on in mini-camp as a DE when Warren went down. We'd have to hope for him to come in and play that position well (which would probably require him to drop some weight and fast), Deaderick to mature very quickly, Lewis to morph into a starting DE, or for the team to get on the phone with another team and acquire a starting quality DE.

Also, G. Warren washed out of a previous 2-gap system because he couldn't hold up against the run, and Lewis has never played in one.

We definitely have a problem with starting DEs but what I am saying is that we have the depth to ease the pain. Of the five we have left they need to collectively be able to fill the roles Tiny would have without hurting their own roles if that means a few more reps for Wright, a few more DE reps for Wilfork, or any other options. Barring a major trade like mankins for a big name end or something crazy we likely are better equipped to ease the pain then anything we would find on the market now or during cutdowns.

I'd pick up a DE if a decent one became available, why not? Problem is they'd probably be another conversion project and good ones aren't usually available.

I don't see how anyone can look at this as anything less than a major loss. Warren may not have been his old self the past two seasons (according to some), but he was still better than anyone else at the position on our team.

On The Sports Hub this morning, they started off by saying,"Derrick Burgess wouldn't even be on the ROSTER 4 or 5 years ago."

Maybe that will give it some perspective. Then they're saying The Saints didn't have a great defense either but they made plays last year. Someone on the Pats defense needs to step up and make plays because the offense isn't gonna be able to close out games this year. Sound familiar? I don't want to see a damn replay of 2009 d%#*!@t.

That Seymour trade is looking really good right now.

Warren going down sucks, but the Seymour trade is irrelevant here.

Had they not traded Seymour, he would have joined the host of free agents the Pats were facing this offseason. They re-signed Wilfork, Bodden, Neal, Banta-Cain and Faulk, and let others like Green and Watson go.

Seymour twice before sat out before getting new deals. I think the Patriots accurately saw they might have trouble re-signing him this time around. And they'd face the tough decision on whom to place the franchise tag (which they applied briefly to Wilfork).

I think the Pats correctly assessed that, barring the trade, 2009 was Seymour's last year as a Patriot.

Mike Wright is a 34 DE. He played there more than anyone on our team last year.

That's not what I meant. He's played DE, but he's built like a DT and that's also where he's best suited. Same thing goes for Wilfork who has played DE in our system as recently as the Baltimore playoff game last year. Would you call him a 34 DE or a 34 DT?

Wilfork play a few plays at DE. Wright has played there his career.
Are you saying Wright is best at NT? I couldnt disagree more with that.
Our 34 DEs and 43 teams DTs are pretty much interchangable. There are very, very few players we have ever used at 34 DE who would be DEs in a 43
Seymour and Warren both played NT as rookies.
They are also built like DTs if you are talking about 43 defense. Our 34 DEs look like that.

It's called "don't trade someone if you don't have their replacement". The Pats took a risk trading Seymour, suffered for it in 2009 and now they're down to Wilfork. Their line went from elite in 2008 to pedestrian in 2010.

Their ILB's are going to have to step up, and we all know that's probably not going to happen.

Well, they didn't stay at the top of the league by paying huge, long term contracts to everyone. What they give to Seymour gets taken from someone else, there's a cap.

The contract would be huge and he has had injuries.

As far as judging when to give out big long term contracts and when not to, I think they have done as well as any team.

Plus, there was no other way we were going to obtain a top draft pick.


BTW, I'm still waiting to replace Willie McGinest.
