OT: Cowboys top draft pick Dez Bryant already causing stir

As for Bryant.

If he'd thrown the pads back to Williams, he'd have dropped them.

If he'd done this to Jason Witten or Romo or even Miles Austin, i'd have said he's a *****.

This doesn't make him one.

Sorry, I don't think the quality of the veteran he refused to carry his pads is even relevant. Rookies carry veteran's pads whether the veteran is a superstar or a scrub who probably will be cut before the end of training camp. That is the rule and the tradition.

To me, hazing is a completely different thing, emotionally harmful and malicious. But carrying pads falls under the category of job requirements for a rookie, and should be done out of respect to the vets and to pay your dues.

The vets will often show the young guys what to do and where to go and how to take care of themselves. In many cases, they're helping out the kids who will eventually replace them.

Sure, there are things you don't want to do as a rookie. And sometimes you'll make a fool out of yourself, but in most instances, it's a bonding exercise meant to bring people closer together and lighten the mood around training camp.

I was kind of sad we passed on Bryant but I get the feeling he's headed towards being the next T.O. Talented? Yes. Lockerroom cancer? You betcha.

Great stuff. I'd normally be against Dez on this one, but Williams really doesn't deserve to have anyone carrying his pads, I can see how Dez thought that it was just wrong, lol.

A rule?

Sorry, is it in the NFL rulebook?

Williams can go screw himself.

Bryant should have carried Crayton or Ogletree's pads instead.

It is an unwritten rule. Sorry, but I totally disagree. Rookies carry veteran's pads no matter how good the veteran is. Bryant should carry all three pads at least at some point in the training camp.

Players should earn the right to have their pads carried by someone.

I think it's pretty big shot to the ego for Roy Williams. Not only does it seem like Bryant doesn't respect him, but Bryant feels like he shouldn't carry the shoulder pads of someone he's about to take their job from. I highly doubt he would do this to one of the best WR's in the game. This would not happen in New England.

Totally agreed. Every other vet on his team and in the league had to go though it. He just basically said he's better than any other player to come before him, on any team. Way to put a bullseye on your back there, Dez. Just to make a point. Tomorrow they should tell him to carry the pads of someone who spent last year on the practice squad.

Sure Roy Williams sucks. But he's stuck around the pros more than one year. That alone to me is qualification enough to command some respect from a guy who's never even taken one pro hit.

Lighten up, Dez.

Does anyone think that Dez Bryant is going to be a super-star?, a game-changer? I think he is, I just hope that passing on this guy doesn't come back to bite us in the arse especially where he was taken at value-laden 24, also especially given our needs. I guess we'll see.

well, to me, so far Bryant approximates Terrell Owens when he first came out...and it seems he's a clone psychologically. I think he's in the perfect place , the correct organization, to start his career.

He is already a prima donna right out of the gate. By telling people he's not going to carry pads, that's putting himself ahead of the team. How much do pads literally weigh? How far does he have to carry it?

Think about it: there is absolutely no cost to doing this other than getting one's ego humbled. There is a reason for this rite.

Superstar? Possibly for the 'Boys or someone else. Superstar here? Not a chance. Our playbook is too complicated and precise, and our coaching staff is like Gordon Ramsay on a bad day.

No one would take any crap, even for a second. Not BB or the assistant coaches, not Brady, not the WRs, not anyone including the other rookies.

I'm firmly anti-hazing, but carrying pads doesn't bother me. That's more of a "pay your dues" tradition, as opposed to the typical ritual humiliation. Yes, football players are professionals, but they need a kind of band of brothers ethic that goes way beyond most jobs. And rocking this particular boat is bound to send out ripples way beyond the particular incident.

Because: what the hell happens at the next practice with all of the other players?

If you're a rookie, do you now feel like a wuss next to Bryant and decide you have to refuse too? But if you're scrabbling for a roster spot, you might want to do everything you can to make a good impression and get the vets to help and advise you. So maybe only the high draft picks march off empty-handed, dividing the draft class into haves and have-nots? Or maybe the team has to step in and abolish the rookie pads-carrying, leaving all of the vets pissed at Bryant? Etc.

You damn well betcha he would be carrying pads in New England...

especially after Big Vince threatened to sit on him.

Bellichick told a rookie Matt Light to "Shut the eff up. You're a rookie, you don't know sh**."

There is obviously a rookie treatment policy/tradition in Foxborough. Like everything else there, it is probably pretty well spelled out and deemed positive for team development. There is nothing random about how Belichick operates. If they felt it was negative, it would already be gone.

Only their first day and they have a media sh** storm. It is obviously another NE policy to restrict the rookies from talking to the media until they learn how not to put their foot in their mouth.

Wade Phillip's "big buddy" approach is about to implode....I'm suprised he has lasted this long.

Zo was talking about this a while ago when I was in the car. He said the veterans on the team will now redlight him during camp. Positively torture him (lockouts, destruction of his personal property, etc.) because this is about principle and not having proved yourself at the professional level or paid your dues.

This is supposed to be where heady draft picks who have often been big fishes in small ponds learn about humility and the potential for veteran players/teamates collectively to impose the groups will on potential self absorbed loners for the good of the team...

When Gronk gets his haircut he's going to look like he has mange.

They do. It's called "surviving in the NFL for more than one season".

I think it was more a case of telling someone "I am here to take your job and I am better then you" without doing it

Sleep lightly, Mr. Bryant.
