What happened? We passed on Dez Bryant TWICE?!?!?

Re: What happened? We passed on Dez Brant TWICE?!?!?

Couldn't be that this is Moss's last year with the Pats and he going to be coasting? Naaawww, he's never done that... :bricks:

What makes you think he is about to turn into a "Big Brother" for Bryant? I don't see it.

Why would Moss "coast" this year? He is going to want to show that he can still play because he is looking for a big money contract for a guy of his age next year whether its from the Pats or anyone else.

I think contrary to what some people believe Moss is a very smart guy and a good teammate. BB thinks so as well, why else would be an offensive captain?

Those of you bashing the bashers (and all's fair on a message board) could at least step back and see that some are simply arguing that CB seemed more set than other positions, and that we have invested a lot of capital in the Db area the last few years.

I just checked and saw that in the last 3 years (3 1/2 if you include yesterday's pick) we have drafted 15 players in the top half of the draft, and 6 of them have been DBs.

4 have been CBs. That's a lot.

When a team has holes, and it appears to have the top 2 spots set, with young talent for nickel and dime spots, it might make sense to look for guys who can potentially breakthrough later in the draft, and there are guys who get overlooked, like Cortland Finnegan and Bodden (those are just 2 who come to mind, I'm sure there are many others).

When I look at what happened yesterday, I not only wonder about why they passed on Bryant or Demaryious Thomas, but also--if they were going strictly for BPA at a position where we have expended much capital--why did they see warts on the guys taken 5 to 7 picks ahead?

The price of trading up seemed rather small. A 3rd rounder. Or a 2nd with a 4th coming back. But did the Patriots see any value in Derrick Morgan?

I guess not. And that's fine too.

Re Bryant, the one message that has come through loud and clear is that we had locker room "chemistry" problems last year. To think that a problem child would get brought in is just insanity.

This isn't 2003 when we had a very strong locker room that could handle a Corey Dillon...

Dez was my binky, but come on guys, did we really expect BB to take that head case? The locker room in NE is in transition and there was no room for another headache. Only time will tell if this was a good move or not. As far as taking more DB's, remember it was not long ago that we had that scrub Deltha O'Neil starting, stock pile them, one of them will turn out to be decent. I'm excited that BB finally took a corner in round 1. BB doesnt really miss on firsts. Ben Watson the exception, who is still decent.

I'm really baffled at the dismay over not drafting Bryant.

Doesn't anyone remember when BB dismissed Moss, Thomas, Guyton, and Burgess for being late to the infamous meeting? That incident was a big deal, and probably the beginning of the end for Thomas in NE.

If nothing else, Bryant has displayed an immature trend for being late to team meetings -- and that's before he's become a multi-millionaire. How can he possibly fit in New England given the story above?

After his words that the Pats are not going to retain him next season and slightly indicating they are cheap without any proof was dumb and shows me nothing that a captain of a team should open thier mouth about.

If he is a smart guy, that was downright stupid

Re: What happened? We passed on Dez Brant TWICE?!?!?

And you know that Moss wouldnt be a good mentor? Look, Moss has been criticized throughout his entire career, much like Bryant has been throughout the past couple of months. He could teach him how to deal with it. They both are big play guys, why wouldnt Moss be a good mentor for Bryant?

I didn't say Moss wouldn't be a good mentor, I did say that there is no indication that he would be a good mentor, and that all the people saying he would be have no clue what so ever.

Maybe he would maybe he wouldn't, but to come here and say with conviction that he and Holt would have taken Dez under their wings, treated him like their son, celebrated Christmas with him, introduced him to their stripper girl friend's daughters and been the daddy he never had is foolish, because you don't have a clue if they would or not.

Maybe Moss would have thought he was an immature moron and had nothing to do with him.

Thats who Moss is, he voices his thoughts and his opinions. There isnt anything wrong with that. It isnt going to be like it will effect his play on the field, it never has. What happens off the field and away from the team is irrelevant, Moss shows up to the field everyday and is a good teammate and captain worthy

We arent going to agree. There really isnt any fact that can make our point either right or wrong.

Actually you are wrong, you said he would be a good roll model, and I said you have no clue if he would or wouldn't. Which you don't.

That makes me 100% correct and gives you a 50% chance of being right.

Moss is playing for a contract extension next season,If he does not have a really fantastic great year knowing it can increase his market value in 2011, then there really is no reason to retain him next season anyway, these are the type of years where players give thier all as captains always should anyways.

Re: What happened? We passed on Dez Brant TWICE?!?!?

Because Bryant isn't very bright and he is very immature. Oklahoma State reportedly had to pare down his playbook so he could learn the plays. How was he going to learn the Pats' playbook. He doesn't like to block, has a lackadasical attitude, and has maturity issues. Didn't we already draft him? Except his name was Chad Jackson back then.

Every potentially great draft pick does not fit the Pats' system and Bryant definitely looked to fit that category.

Exactly. Most every off-field characteristic that BB cares about in a player is exactly what Dez does not have. Anyone thinking that BB would draft Dez was really taking a flyer or just doesn't know what BB thinks is important in a player.

To be fair, the Vikings traded up for Harvin last year specifically to get ahead of the Patriots, who by all accounts were going to take him. To say that Belichick simply won't take a WR in the first round is misguided, IMO.

I lol'd. With Moss, Welker, and Galloway at the time you actually thought the Patriots "who by all accounts were going to take Harvin?" With all that wide receiver depth we had last season, I see no reason why we'd even draft him. Those very few articles which stated that the Patriots indicated drafting Harvin is just as identical to the recent ones saying we'd draft Tebow. We have no use for either of them and I'm pretty sure Belichick would have rather addressed our needs before drafting an overhyped receiver in Harvin (or Bryant).

Why is Bryant at 24 an overhyped pick?

I was not regarding pick 24, but as in himself. There's been so much hype going around about him and how he's a "Top 10" or "Top 5" talent. Pretty much explains why he could be described as "overhyped" or maybe even "overrated," if you want to go that far.. I for one am not disappointed that we did not draft him.

I think that is just an extra incentive for Moss to prove his doubters wrong and have a big 2010. You really dont think he gave it his all this season?, he played 2/3 of the season with a separated shoulder and the first 1/3'd with a banged up back.

Can anyone explain this to me? We need a WR, LB, RB & we take ANOTHER secondary player?

Seriously, why?
hes an intellectually challenged and lacks maturity. In other words Bryants a is a dumb azz problem child, I'm glad we passed. I wouldn't doubt if he's a bust especially in Dallas.

Bryant makes Doug Gabriel look like a genious. There's little chance Bryant would have been able to come in and pick up this offense.

I was dissapointed that they did not pick Bryant too...but I heard though he is really talented...he's dumb as a rock.

BB's interested only in smart players...correct?

I think he will be far from a bust. An unbelievable talent with a WR body like any I've ever seen coming out of college. Most wr's build their way over a few season to amass that strength and conditioning. He's already there. I don't think there is a CB in the league that could muscle in front of him to get a jump ball or bump him on the run.

I think it was a mistake not drafting him but I also believe in BB's track record with his first rounders. McCourty is a fine pick and fills a glaring need on this team as far as special teams and returner. He was a shutdown against meager competition but that still says a lot. I'm very interest to see him challenge Butler for playing time and think it makes for a good training camp battle. As much nickel and dime as this team plays they both should see the field a lot.

I didn't say he didn't play well but this year is for the $$$$ down the road...incentives,incentives
