NFL Offseason moves which may impact the draft

Eagles trade McPuke to Shanahan for their 2nd-rounder (#37) + a 4th or 3rd in 2011.

So much for the Skins poss. drafting a QB with their 1st-rounder. Bad news for us.
Bad news? Stoney baby, this is good news!
1. Oakland still has Russell and Gradkowski. Hurrah for 2011.
2. Washington didn't have the trade horsepower to be considered a strong trading candidate with NE at 22.
3. What do the Eagles want? Beef on the O-line (Iupati/Pouncey), a new Westbrook (Best, Tate), a big play West Coast WR (Bryant, Thomas), a new back-up QB (McCoy), none of whom have hit (yet) the NE serious interest threshold (sorry about your binky Pouncey, well, not really ).

This gives Philly 11 draft picks, 9 tradeable with 2 each in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th - Andy Reid is a playah! You may not have liked the last two Eagles/Pats trades, but if NE wants to make a move for Third and Fourth round targets, Philly will listen.

Meet Dez Bryant...WR of the Washington Redskins.

Not with their 1st-rounder. Shanahan has to draft a LT (Okung or Bulaga) with that one.

Edit: I didn't mean to pile-on; I hadn't seen BF's & Clonamery's posts before I responded.

I don't see why it hurts us. If anything is slightly increases the chance of Claussen or more likely McCoy being there at #22 and gives us a possible trade down.

That is the other way to look at it, too. I just don't know if any of the bottom-of-the-round teams will be looking at a QB at all, never mind trading up to draft one. I think I'd rather have the option of someone at a position of need still being available.

All well & good, but I'm not sure that I want to trade completely out of the 1st round yet. Maybe if Odrick, Brandon Graham & my binky Pouncey are all gone before 22, then I would prob. be a lot more amenable to trade our 1st for an early 2nd + a 3rd + a 4th.

BTW, the talk here in PA is that the Eagles will be targeting OL, a 4-3 pass-rushing DE, OLB (not nec. a pass-rusher), CB & Safety. RB, WR & QB aren't as high on the priority list. So Andy & Bill could actually be looking at similar players (esp. at OL, Pass-Rusher & CB) early in the draft.

I'm not sure NE trades out of round one, but Philly has the extra picks to play with if they wanted to move ahead of GB for a CB or S too.

They always seem to be looking at the same players, nothing new there.

As of today, I still think (hope) that the most logical trade-down is with Arizona to 28 for one of their 3rds (88 or 89). We would still be in the 1st round with the ability to move again, should the opportunity present itself.

Who does AZ want badly enough to trade up for?

Claussen? McCoy? Everson Griffen? Weatherspoon? Charlie Brown? Buehler?
Buehler makes sense, the others, convince me. How much do they want to spend on QB? From what I'm reading observers who know something of Anderson expect him to beat out Leinhart, I can't see spending extra picks to move up and take another QB, wait and grab Pike or Jarret Brown in the second/third if you want strong arms.

Griffen? Maybe, I'm not sold. Weatherspoon, maybe, except he's a better 4-3 backer and not IMO an ILB for a 3-4. Charles Brown? They run a Pittsburgh O-line, beef, beef, and more beef - Brown is a zone OT.

Trade speculation is nice, but lets pretend someone they might seriously consider spending extra picks on is sliding to 22 and isn't a fit for NE. :snob:

Please stop using calm reasoning against my hopes & prayers.

I want my 3rd-rounder (& 5th-rounder, too) back, d%#*!@t. Wahhh...

You never know - teams get attached to certain players. I think Minnesota might be a good partner. They've got a pretty good roster and they could want to move up for a DT (Odrick?) or CB (Wilson?) who surely won't be there at 30. They also could use a young QB, though I'm not sure they'd want to move up or just wait at 30 for McCoy.

I was disturbed to read the scout's following opinion on Gresham:

"JR: Tell me why Jermaine Gresham is viewed so highly. I see a player that missed a season to a bad knee injury, runs slower than half the tackles in this draft, and can’t block a lick.

Scout: You know what, we’ve had that exact conversation a couple of times in working out our (draft) board. There are people in our front office who feel the same way you do, and we will not pick him above the 3rd round because of that. But that kid does have his defenders. I think you understate his speed. He’s not fast but he plays faster than he runs. I love how he uses his body to create a target, and if you throw the ball near him he’s gonna catch it. I’ll give you this though--he ain’t no blocker, that’s for sure. When you see a kid his size you think he should be able to line up tight and maul, but he can’t do that at all."

If Grehsam can't block, I don't want anything to do with him in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft.

I agree that if he can't block, then the patriots will take him off their TH and FRI boards.

But perhaps, he has just not been called upon to block in college.

Possibly, but with Minnesota I've got to see it to believe it after the efforts Chilly has made to pee in Belichick's wheaties - bad blood doesn't make easy trading partners.

Darrin Gantt, a writer for the Charlotte Observer whose football knowledge I respect, said of Lewis, "He's the kind of guy the Pats seem to have made hay signing in the last few years. He's a very good inside rusher on third down. That's the thing he can do. He's not a big 'hold up against the run' guy. You don't want him to play 55 or 60 percent of the snaps. The people who used him situationally got good results out of him. He was brought [to Carolina after being a first-round pick of the Rams in 2001] to play behind [Chris] Komeatu and [Kris] Jenkins. He's very smart and he a great locker-room guy. He understands his place in the league at this point."

You could be talking about Crumpler too.
Funny that (and we've got folks lobbying for problem children in the draft ).

I'll say this - I don't want any problem children here. But there's a difference between guys who are good in the locker room and OK on the field - like Seau was last year, and guys who lead in the locker room AND on the field by making big plays - guys like Rodney Harrison and Willie Mac. The only guy on the defense who even comes close to that right now is Wilfork. Maybe Mayo can be another one of those guys. Lewis? I'll be happy if he can replace Jarvis' playing time and effectiveness through 2008.
