Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

So if the Pats sign Bodden for under $5 million a year, I want to hear back from all the people who blasted the Pats for not giving him the $6-8 million a year he was reportedly looking for before free agency started just to lock him up and not let him go elsewhere to see his salary demands were out of whack with his value.

Were a lot of people saying that? I know a lot of us got pretty incensed at the idea of him signing somewhere else for $4-5 million, but my recollection is that most people were pretty okay with him leaving if it was going to take $8 million to keep him in NE.

Re: Bodden deal done - 5 years, $28.5M ($10M GTD) [merged]

Yey and for 5 year too.

With him and Butler here for a while we have a good secondary that can actually build some depth top or bottom now.

Good, now go get a WR

There were a few very vocal ones. Of course they will come here now and complain the Pats are paying over $5 million a year for a JAG CB.

I fully expected to see a 4/5yr deal w/ $7m ave w/ $15m signing bonus and if it got to that level, my expectation would be for the Pats to let him go and not overpay.

Glad I was way off!!

Great news. This looks like the first offseason since 2007 where we actually maintain the talent level on defense, instead of declining. Another good draft, and this team could be looking pretty stout defensively in two years, perhaps even in 2010.

Wow, that's not much guaranteed money for Bodden; it'll be interesting to see how this one's structured. I'd imagine that it's pretty front-loaded to take advantage of no cap. I'm fine with the salary; a little higher than ideal, but after what Robinson set the market at, it's pretty reasonable. Compared to the free agent CB contracts that get thrown around every year, this is a borderline-steal, really.

I was just going to say. Compared to Robinson's deal, this seems ridiculously reasonable. Now, I don't watch many (okay, any) Texans games, but from what I've heard, Dunta is a bit overrated.

I'd take Bodden at this price any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

In hindsight, the 2004 CB crop completely failed to live up to the hype. Robinson and DeAngelo Hall were both top 10 picks, with Chris Gamble going later in the first. If not for Nathan Vasher, the CB crop would be a complete bust.

Re: Bodden deal done - 5 years, $28.5M ($10M GTD) [merged]

lets see what kind of player the pats get now that he's not in a contract year.........

he's been in the league for 7 years.....

2 contract years, 11 INT's
5 non-contract years 7 INT's

the pats are soft if all 10M is up front

I thought Chicago benched Vasher?

True that, someone posted this Web site that shows him as the 14th best CB last year, above Asante Samuel and Nnamdi Asomugah. ProFootballFocus.com - By Position

However, a year earlier, he was ranked 108th by this same Web site.

I'm a believer in Contract Years.

That said, it's a little unfair to Bodden. Two of the non contract years he didn't play that much, starting as a UDFA. Another one was a bad scheme fit in Detroit. Two more he combined for 5 INT but in just 24 games as he had some injuries.

Just like I said about the Boldin contract, $10M is not a lot of guaranteed money. Good contract for Bodden. Hopefully he can maintain is level of play this season.
