I'm not doubting that, I'm just saying the Pats already have the same guy in Wright, Pryor, Brace, and Richard.
Rip on it if you want, but I thought that LeKevin did a good job in 2008, and we really could have used him last year. I'd definitely like to see him back in a Pats uniform. Wright's the starter, and we need depth behind him/
This was expected.
Letting LeKevin go was obviously a foolish mistake.
I never changed my sig and I always had faith that the Widowmaker would return.
Yeah, but you say 2 1/2 years like it's a detriment. LeKevin was actually a pretty decent backup who we fortunately didn't need to use. If Richard can force his way on to the roster he needs to do it in camp.
To get a known quantity cheap with another year of NFL experience is a gift. Why throw a dart at a board?
It was 3 1/2 years, not 2 1/2.
Again, I'm not saying this is a bad thing. Just that you have a very similar player in Richard who is younger and still might have untapped potential. We know what Le Kevin brings and he'd be an asset to the team, but not at the cost of kicking Richard off the roster.
Couldn't disagree more. If he's blocking a 1st round pick that's different, but a 7th that hasn't played is like trading a functional used car for a megabucks ticket.
Hardly played in 2006, played more in 2007 and 8. That's two and a half years, plus a year with another team. Why would you want someone younger than a player not even in his prime years?
Because there's still a chance that he may be better than we thought. I think we're past that point with Le Kevin (and Woods). Hell, the Broncos had next to nothing at DE this year and Le Kevin still couldn't crack the lineup.
But I don't have any problem with signing Le Kevin and having him battle it out for a roster spot with Richard, et al.
Of course there is. The fact he lasted til round seven indicates a lot of teams didn't think he was great.
The fate of most seventh round picks is obscurity. The upside? Usually a givens or Smith if you're lucky.
We'll never agree on this. If Richard is to make the team, he needs to be prepared to beat out anyone in front of him. why do you assume the wouldn't pick up another vet backup if Smith wasn't available?
I know some don't think much of Mike Wright, but I thought Mike Wright was pretty good last year. He's the front runner to replace Seymour IMHO.
Wright Wilfork Warren
If we sign LeKevin, he would provide good depth at DE, and Pyror good depth at DT.
Brace is an easy inactive.
The Patriots are good up the middle, DL, ILB and at S. Its OLB and CB that have me worried. Signing TBC was a step in the right direction. Hopefully we resign Bodden.
Givens >>> Smith.
TBC >>> Smith.
Cassel >>> Smith.
We obviously have a different valuation of Smith.
I think they're already all set at backup DL, except for camp competition (which is all I think Le Kevin would be). This assumes that Wright is a backup, which is what he should be, and that the Pats draft a DE, which is highly likely. They typically carry 6 or 7 DL. That leaves you with Warren, Wilfork, draft pick, Wright, Pryor, Brace. If they carried a 7th, it would come down to Smith or Richard. That player would then compete for active roster duty with Brace. The only other DL on the roster right now is Adrian Grady.
Now list every seventh round pick that never made it to three years in the NFL and you will have made a good point.
Look, I know what you're saying. All I'm saying is that Smith is what he was before - the 6th DL, a gameday active bubble guy. Nothing more, nothing less. Pats already have two or three guys who can fill that roll. The more the merrier, though...
No, he's a low pick with 4 years NFL experience. He's played in the regular defense, he's played on teams. On our team, our system.
Darryl Richard is a complete ?
If he is as good as you project him to be, for whatever reason, he needs to show that and overcome the 4 years experience his competitor has.
Why not let BB decide who gets the spot?
I'm not entirely sure where you're disagreeing with me here.
Are you trying to say that Smith has been more than a 6th DL with the Patriots? In his entire time here, he's been behind Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, Green, Wright, and Hill (2006) here. So by default he has been the 6th DL, unless you want to make the assessment that his true value is higher than that, which would indeed be a "?".
Pegging Richard as the 53rd man/7th DL - the "Santonio Thomas" role - is an appropriate assessment based on his year on the PS and his draft status. So therefore he'd be competing (with Smith and Brace) for the 6th DL role, given a first five consisting of Wilfork, Warren, new RE, Wright, Pryor. Which is what I said before.
