Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum

Pees walking or not, something needed to be done even if it's a token gesture to give the masses hope that Belichick has identified that change is needed and is on the way.

The day Bill starts managing his staff or his roster to make token gestures to the masses is the day the dynasty is over.

RAC coordinated talent at it's peak. Pees inherited it on the back nine, and gradually a lot of youngsters and replacement vets who didn't remotely resemble the guys they replaced. We witnessed the result of that on the clubhouse this season.

It's entirely likely that after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, which however slow to develop is ultimately tough to beat long term, Dean didn't want to work in this environment any more. Stress is one of the things cancer docs will tell you to avoid if you want to survive.

His kids and family likely stopped by this dump from time to time and realized that we're not exactly an appreciative fanbase. Never really have been. We tend to expect to win it all or we want our pound of flesh. Some even grow to enjoy the taste of flesh more than the winning. With a little help from the local scribes, we eventually turn against anyone who performs here regardless of their level of success...my theory is it's something in the water. If you weren't born here or spent time here in your formative years, it's inheritable via second generation redsox DNA or contageous via osmosis. You probably have a predisposition to it if you land here randomly.

You can beat it, but apparently you have to realize you are at risk before more than half your brain has atrophied.

Good luck to the Pees family. Thanks for helping this team hold it together as long as they could, including through an 18 win season under seige and an 11 win season after we replaced Brady with a QB who hadn't started since HS. Glad you got a ring for your efforts as our linebackers coach.

YES!!!! this is great news in a tumultuous week. I wish Pees well in his future, but to be blunt, he stunk it up as a defensive coordinator and cost us championships. We waited too long here, but finally!

I didn't know Pees couldn't set the edge or play the mike.

The guy did pretty good without those 2 pieces ... stunk it up is way overboard IMO.

He wasn't the problem ... his lack of players was the problem.

Well said Mo. As i read from pg 1 through to pg 19, i couldnt believe how people were responding to this news. Actually, looking back im not sure why im surprised. Most of the people on this board have a habit of blaming the wrong people for everything. People just arent happy unless this team is 19-0 with a SB win.

I certainly hope his family never read anything here. For that matter, i hope nobody who works for the Pats ever visits this board

Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum

I didn't see Pees as the problem. It was and is a personnel issue.

I wish him the best and hope he's not leaving with a bitter taste in his mouth.

Re: Dean Pees FINALLY Fired

Interesting... Hopefully O'Brien is next.

Re: SMY: Dean Pees FINALLY fired

What makes you think Al Groh would be any better?

He gets the most out of the talent he has. BB knows him well. His defense will never be completely exhausted at the end of a game.

Re: SMY: Dean Pees FINALLY fired

Al Groh would not be any better. He's run Virginia into the ground over the past 2 years. Not a big fan of his, even though he is a Parcells guy.

He's not a head coach but he's a good DC. He is not a great recruiter but look at his defenses - pretty good when he had talent and he gets a lot out of whatever talent he has. That's why Parcells is interested.

Agreed. The problem is the last four or five drafts, and I don't think those can be blamed on Dean Pees.

Oh christ cry me a bloody river. I'm not way down on Pees at all, nor am I going to say he did a good job. IMO he performed to an average level as the DC. That doesn't take into consideration the personnel issues.

I've been an ardent supporter of the defensive problems being a meshing of his scheming and the personnel, and after the epic nature in which the defense collapsed at key moments this season, something needed to be done. Pees and the Patriots have decided it's time to part ways and they've done so amicably.

And before you harp on about growing up in a sporting town and turning on your own no matter what the success, that's not just limited to Boston.. believe me.

Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum

Three theories:

1. Pees really did retire for reasons of health/stress.
2. Pees was fired.
3. Pees is a stand-up guy who fired himself.

My bet is that it's a combo of all three.

Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum

No matter how he left/was fired, I think this defense needed a breath of fresh air. A bit of a change. Pees hasn't had the peices that someone like RAC did, but he did have some pretty good ones, and they never clicked. The new guys, like AD and Burgess never really found a place, and many of the young players haven't improved. Now, alot of this can be based on poor drafting, free agent signing, etc, but I think some of the blame has to be on Pees. This D just didn't perform at the times it needed to. I wish him luck in recovering his health, and hopefully the pats can get a good DC coach.

Seriously, whats with the sudden love for Pees? I' glad his soft schemes will go. You have to think that maybe Bill will learn form his mistakes and hire a guy experienced enough to handle the defense. But I'm not holding my breath.

Oddly, the soft schemes preceded him. They are generally predicated on secondary talent and experience, or lack thereof. It's never a good idea to hold your breath where Bill is concerned.

Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum

Thank you... Let's get a DC that can install some semblance of an attacking defense. Bend but don't break used to work when the rules weren't so much in favor of the passing game. But now it just leads to eventual defensive breakdowns and no ability to hold onto the game in the 4th quarter, we ended up at the mercy of the offense in those situations and it led to losses.

The key to defense in today's NFL is don't give the QB time to think, make him react, and eventually he will make bad decisions and you'll get turnovers. Turnovers win football games. This defense didn't do enough of either, create QB pressure and create turnovers.

Looks like you'll be wanting us to hire a 70 year old DC then.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've been beating this same drum for a while now. Great post.

Average league rankings through four years each:

Very interesting ...
