Re: Pees' contract expires, choses not to return; Breer: had prostate cancer last sum
The day Bill starts managing his staff or his roster to make token gestures to the masses is the day the dynasty is over.
RAC coordinated talent at it's peak. Pees inherited it on the back nine, and gradually a lot of youngsters and replacement vets who didn't remotely resemble the guys they replaced. We witnessed the result of that on the clubhouse this season.
It's entirely likely that after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, which however slow to develop is ultimately tough to beat long term, Dean didn't want to work in this environment any more. Stress is one of the things cancer docs will tell you to avoid if you want to survive.
His kids and family likely stopped by this dump from time to time and realized that we're not exactly an appreciative fanbase. Never really have been. We tend to expect to win it all or we want our pound of flesh. Some even grow to enjoy the taste of flesh more than the winning. With a little help from the local scribes, we eventually turn against anyone who performs here regardless of their level of success...my theory is it's something in the water. If you weren't born here or spent time here in your formative years, it's inheritable via second generation redsox DNA or contageous via osmosis. You probably have a predisposition to it if you land here randomly.
You can beat it, but apparently you have to realize you are at risk before more than half your brain has atrophied.
Good luck to the Pees family. Thanks for helping this team hold it together as long as they could, including through an 18 win season under seige and an 11 win season after we replaced Brady with a QB who hadn't started since HS. Glad you got a ring for your efforts as our linebackers coach.
Pees walking or not, something needed to be done even if it's a token gesture to give the masses hope that Belichick has identified that change is needed and is on the way.
