wont happen. BB feels hiring exp guy will be a 1/2 yr thing and then will find HC jobs elsewhere.

There are plenty of experienced DC candidates who aren't likely to ever become HC's at this point. Paul Pasqualoni, Al Groh, Clancy Pendergast, Greg Blache, just to name a few. **** Jauron's failed twice as a HC, and isn't likely to get another shot any time soon. Not saying that any of them should necessarily be the hire, just that experience doesn't necessarily mean that someone is in the waiting to become a HC. A young hotshot who does well is probably more likely to become hot HC material (as happened with both Mangini and McDaniels) than someone who has been around a while. Dom Capers, Greg Williams and Mike Nolan don't seem to be particularly hot names for coaching vacancies right now, despite doing phenomenal jobs as DCs.

This guy started coaching D in 2006 as LB's coach, before that was offensive coach.

And McDaniels was a defensive coach until two years before he became defacto OC and he did a great job. Belichick believes that to be great coordinator on either side of the ball, you have to know how to coach on the other side to get a feel for it. Typically, Belichick starts everyone off on defense and then move them to offense, but Patricia did the other.

Pees walking or not, something needed to be done even if it's a token gesture to give the masses hope that Belichick has identified that change is needed and is on the way.

I tend to believe her. I have always wondered how much Belichick valued Pees considering since around 2007, he took over working with the starting defense on the sidelines making the adjustments. Part of it was his trust of McDaniels, but the other part might have been he was not happy with the way Pees made adjustments.

We will never know for sure. I can see the Pats letting Pees walk away gracefully rather than the embarrassment of letting the world know they weren't going to renew his contract. Pees could have walked away for health issues too.

All I know is that it is time to move on and hope that Belichick's trust of Matt Patricia is well deserved.

It's plausible that it was BB who chose not to renew but let the story be that it was Pees who decided to go, there's no reason BB wouldn't want Pees' exit to be a dignified one. Who knows...let's just call it a "mutual" thing and end it. BB didn't beg him to stay even if it was Pees' decision so whatever, but "fired" maybe wasn't the best word to use and why turn the man's departure into a media circus. He might not have been everyone's favorite coach but he always seemed like a nice guy and a good person.

All I know I have been in companies where some real screw ups have been let go and management have let me...ummm...err....them save face and say it was my....scratch that.... their decision to move on to other endevors.

YES!!!! this is great news in a tumultuous week. I wish Pees well in his future, but to be blunt, he stunk it up as a defensive coordinator and cost us championships. We waited too long here, but finally!

Now.. let's get **** Jauron in here for a DC interview. I am all for it. The man had some aggressive, opportunistic defenses in Buffalo and could have a great working relationship with BB.

Looking at Pees stats he actually did a better job then most give him credit for. The one year Mangini was DC, NEP was 26th in overall defense. Pees steps in and they become the 6th best D in the league and no one is complaining. The next year he does even better. The past 2 years he's been a mere 10th and 11th best D in the league, so it could be worse, but everyone remembers the D breaking down and crucial times.

IMO, BB didn't ask Pees to leave. He was doing a good job maybe not an outstanding job. I believe it's more health related.

I don't agree with you at all. We beat up on average teams and were destroyed by good sides. I know a lot of that is owing to personnel changes in the past few seasons, but I'm not going to say he was doing a better than average job.

I thought Pees was okay but change is needed.

That being said ... this hire cannot come from within and it needs to be someone who has experience. Hiring from within is for continuity ... Bill is signaling to the players a new direction. I'll go with Groh for now as a guess. Nothing against Pepper or Matt. Jauron might be a good choice because perhaps he will stay ... he is a brilliant guy who Bill likes.

O'Brien is different from McDaniels who is different from Weis. "From within" does not equal "the same". The new DC very likely will be from within (Patricia) but that doesn't mean for a second it will be the same.

IMO, Groh is "from within" just as much as Patricia anyway, given his time with Parcells and Belichick.

Personally, I didn't think Pees was an all-world coach, but I certainly didn't think that he was as bad as some made him out to be. I thought that the major coaching failures came from the offensive side of the ball (with O'Brien calling the plays) last season and considered the defensive issues to be more or less related to personnel. Sorry to hear of Pees' health issues and I certainly hope that he returns to full health and lands on his feet somewhere else. I also hope that this is just the start to major changes being made to the defensive side of the ball this season, both in the coaching staff and on the field.

if any of them follow bb's system then maybe he will consider. For e.g DC for the crimson tide whoever it is. someone who can follow the system .
