Welker's family: We're absolutely sick

Not looking good next week.

'We're absolutely sick'
Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff January 3, 2010 04:07 PM

In Oklahoma City, Leland Welker sat in front of his television today, like he does every Sunday, to watch his son Wes play for the Patriots. He has never felt like he does right now.

“Not too good," Leland Welker said shortly after the fourth quarter started. "We’re sick. We’re absolutely sick. We take all those hits and stuff all season long. And then just one fluke cut, and he just blows it out.”

Leland Welker had not yet heard any word on the extent or nature of Welker’s injury. He just knew, like anyone who watched the play and Welker’s reaction, that it was not good. He hadn’t spoken to Welker, but his wife had.

“He was really upset,” Leeland Welker said. “He didn’t feel like talking about it too much.”

Welker has had some injuries in his career. Two offseasons ago, he had minor ankle surgery to remove bone chips. Even going back to high school, though, he has never experienced an injury that caused him to be carried off the field.

“This is the worst we’ve ever encountered,” Leland Walker said.

One of the most jarring images was Welker, one of the toughest players in the league, dabbing at his eyes on the Patriots bench before a cart came and carried him away.

“I’ve seen him look like that before,” Leland Welker said. “It was always in a losing effort or something like that. It wasn’t a good sign.”

Re: Welker's family: We're absolutely sick

The trainers look at it for 5 minutes and knew. Welker is tearing up on the sideline. He's done for the season. It's just tough that it happened during non-contact.

Re: Welker's family: We're absolutely sick

With all the hits he took this season, there was no reason why he should've been on the field today. Dumb decisions have been the theme of the 2009 Patriots.

and we have idiots talking about it being a "ruse" smh. Get well soon Wes!

Re: Welker's family: We're absolutely sick

Sucks for Welker. He was really starting to become a star. Hopefully, the injury isn't career threatening.

and with all those hits he took his injury happened on a non contact play that could have happened in practice.

Your critique is totally lame when you consider that Manning and Wayne and anyone else in the playoffs played longer today than Welker.

"He was really starting to become a star."? Wow...

I have to agree with you. Rest the man who has taken the biggest beating of arguably any NFL player.

Re: Welker's family: We're absolutely sick [merged]

he's always been a nutso hater fan anyway...don't pay attention...unless he ever posts even ONE positive take..shouylkd change his handle to "Hey Bro! What's Down??"

OMG because I have the benefit of hindsight I can say I disagreed with the decision to play any starters today

He had knee problems early in the season. I assume this was the same knee just going out. He'll have off season surgery and be back for next season.

As soon as they win a super bowl, I will shut up. Until then, you will continue to see me rant about how the Pats franchise continue to underachieve.

I don't remember those guys taking as many hits as Welker.

They rest Wilfork but not Welker?

Wilfork was coming off an injury, as was Warren, Welker was not.

I disagree. There were plenty of good reasons to play the starters for at least the first half after a season where inconsistency had been the dominant theme before the last couple of games. If this had happened in the fourth quarter and they were up or down by a couple of scores, I'd agree.

It was a non-contact injury that could have occurred in practice without pads. There were some dumb decisions this season no doubt, but this wasn't one of them. I chalk it up to some bad luck and the breaks of the game.
