Shula: "What's (Bill) Belichick got?" About a hundred?"

Really, really surprised by the Walsh numbers. Wow, not even a hundred wins. I guess since I was a young boy in the 80's I ended up THINKING he had been there forever... Even his winning % surprises me... would've thought it was higher.

In his case, changing the game (along with more than the usual number of SB rings) pushed him to Canton. And... that is what utlimately will be BB's claim to fame. Not the numbers (# of rings, yes) but rather his out-of-the-box thinking, his defense in NY, the 01 season, the ultimate team concept in an era of super ego-maniacs... That is what brings Bill to the HoF.

Agree 150%!

Hey - whether it was a joke or not, Shula's got the wins... he can crow about them. Belichick respects the game enough not to get offended by that sort of a joke or serious comment.

Shula sullied his own legacy when he took a few Spygate potshots at the Patriots in '07... clearly he was feeling defensive given the run at the Perfect Season... but given the fact that he himself was the subject of a Tampering violation that resulted in the Dolphins losing a FIRST ROUND PICK you'd think he'd be smart enough not to throw stones from his own glass house.

calm down on the insults and vulgar towards shula. it was a good spirited joke. lighten up fellas.
???

You really should read before commenting. Jabbing a needle, even a soft one, isn't exactly light hearted:

As an example: "What's (Bill) Belichick got?" says Shula, jabbing a soft needle at the Patriots' coach. "About a hundred?"

He does have the wins and he does crow about them.

But this misses a point. The best coach is not necessarily the coach who coached more years.

Just like running backs. Jerome Bettis has more career yards than Jim Brown. Anyone think that Bettis was a better runner than Brown. Or Emmit Smith has more career yards than either Payton or Sanders. So he is the better runner.

The difference is that Smith and Bettis have too much class to act like the douche Shula is. Can you picture Bettis saying, "So how many years does Jim Brown have?" I cannot.

Nor can I think of a RB with high career totals mocking Sayers because his total is less.

Shula and Landry were extremely fortunate. They were good coaches, to be sure, but they coached a LOT of years. That doesn't make them necessarily better than coaches who coached fewer years.

Shula should rest on his laurels and keep his mouth shut. But he is still pissed about the snow plow game. He got screwed, sure, and it wasn't fair, but time to let go, Donny.

Absolutely agree. Humility has a quality all it's own. It's worth practicing all the time.

a little surprising he is taking a jab considering how much BB respects shula

Shula and Belichick hate each other. Shula hates anyone who has to do with either Jimmy Johnson or Nick Saban (Belichick is close to both). Shula hates Johnsn because of the way Johnson treated Marino and he hates Saban because his son got fired to give Saban his job.

Shula blasted the Patriots after Spygate and took some not so veiled shots at Belichick. Shula even said that if the Pats went 19-0 that there should be an asterick next to their mark. He backed off when everyone started to call him a bitter old man in the media.

There is little love lost between Belichick and Shula. Eventhough I am sure Shula probably said it jokingly, internally he probably felt like taking a real shot a Belichick.

As for the wins, Shula coached the Dolphins for 25 years and 7 years in Baltimore and averaged 10.25 wins a year (granted he had a 14 game season for 15 of those seasons). If Belichick coaches for 32 years as a head coach, he should have considerably more wins (granted in 32 years he would have coached 30 more games) assuming he can continue winning like he does.

I don't want to take away from Shula because having double digit average annual wins for a 30 plus year career whether it is a 14 or 16 game schedule is amazing and would be incredibly tough to duplicate.

So, did you guys miss it?

The measure for greatness among football coaches is how they compare to Belichick.

Yes. I think you nailed it!

We have a winner!

Funny, I was just thinking to myself that, IIRC, the only guy who had an HC job longer than Shula was Tom Landry - and then I realized both of them were replaced by Jimmy Johnson.

Landry coached for 29 years, Shula for 33 years. Shula is tied with Curly Lambeau with 33 years and behind George Halas who is the record holder with 40 years...

Shula is a self-congratulatory prima donna. I'd love for the Patriots go go 19-0 this season and shut him up forever.

I think it may be time to put Grandpa in a home. He is a petty and bitter old man who knows he hasn't won a meaningful game in what 35 years. Maybe he needs his diapers changed. And by the way his restaurants suck.

If BB had the desire to coach for 20 more years, he would... and he'd trounce Levy's record. Unfortunately, BB has expressed a desire not to coach until he is old. It makes me doubt he'll sign another cotract after 2013, and if he does, it more would likely be a gm position than a head coaching one. I hope I'm wrong... I'd be thrilled if BB signed another 5+ year contract.... I just don't think it's gonna happen.....

Imagine if he did sign through 2019, then struck gold with another late round qb pick in 2019. Brady tutors the kid for a year or so and BB decides to sign a contract to 2024. This is the only scenario I could imagine where BB would stay long enough to challenge Levy's record. BB retires at 74 years young with 7 superbowl rings and most regular season wins, and on the day BB is inducted into the HOF, the SB trophy is renamed to the Bellichick Trophy. That would rock.

When has Belichick stated either way whether he wanted to continue coaching until later in life. When does Belichick ever talk about anything in the future? Typically we hear about his contract extensions a year after he signs them.

My guess he will continue coaching into his late sixties. His father coached until he was 70. Belichick was raised on football. Belichick is well aware of history and would probably like to challenge Shula's record. Everything we know about Belichick is that he lives and breathes football. I can't see him willingly walking away from the game any time soon.

I agree but would put it slightly differently. I think that Belichick will apply the same standard to himself as he does to his coaches and players; he'll continue to coach as long as he feels he's getting the job done the way it should be done. That's what he expects of the people who work for him and everything we know about him suggests he'll apply the same standard to himself. Personally, I think he'll be getting the job done for a long time.

I hope you're right. I remember in a presser, someone asked him about coaching at Joe Paterno's, and BB's answer was "I'm not going to be breaking down film when I'm 80.... not when I'm 70." Ever since then, I've had the impression that BB won't be coaching till he's old, and that has been reinforced in things I've seen in the media since. I could see him going the route of a GM and using hand raised people to run the coaching part of the team some day.

The way I read it is like this:

It is unrealistic the career wins will be broken any time soon, because even the best coach out there has quite a lot of ground to gain. Like a previous poster said: 19 years at 10 wins a season or something foolish like that.
