Led by a ADHD Rich Kotite with a huge gut? They'll be lucky to be .500 this year.

I think the Finns and Bills are better.

Those are nine games on their schedule that I think they can and will win. I think they will be better on defense and I also think that they wont ask to much of Sanchez. Much like what the Ravens did last year with flacco. The Jets have the best run game in the division (IMO) with Jones, Washington, now Green. I also don't think that any QB can play as bad as Favre did at the end of last season

I guess we just have a totally different opinion of this team then. You have them sweeping the Bills, and I think the Bills are a better team. You have them going 5-3 on the road including beating Hous, NO, Buff, Tampa Oakland. They lost to Oakland last year. And the other 4 teams IMO are better.
I put mine in next to yours. 5-11

According to Andy if you suck in stats one year and you have not done much, then you have absolutely no chance to improve much better the next season because your stats from the previous year said so...that is unless it refers to the Patriots then all bets are off ...typical homer, why would I expect better logic??

Anyone who said Miami and Atlanta would make the playoffs and one of those teams would go to the playoffs with a rookie at the helm and the other with a noodle armed QB raise their hand ... No one did, oops Andy what do you have to say to that?

You're arguing for an exception without much justification. He's arguing for the rule with plenty of reasoning on his side.

I'm going to have to agree with state on this one. Houston and New Orleans are both significantly better than the Jets, and I think they're just about evenly matched with Buffalo.

wow....

8-9 wins? maybe 10?

am I missing something or is Bart Scott the second coming of Ray Lewis?

He seems to be the only upgrade in a sea of question marks(anchez). Let us not forget that along with the Jets losing key players, the rest of the division has upgraded their squads as well (Owens, Jason Taylor etc). The Patriots have upgraded in every position in my opinion. We have 4 starters in the backfield, 4 tight ends, our 4th WR is either Greg Lewis or Joey Gallaway. We were able to draft depth at a discount. Sean Springs and Leigh Bodden will man the corners, backups will be both second year guys, and a rookie 2nd rounder. Returning defensive rookie of the year at MLB. Sick depth on the DL. Our only ? is at OLB, but if Belichick wasn't confident in who he had...he would've drafted or replaced the position with a free agent....

Oh yeah...and Tom Brady is back.

Its funny to read how some are surprised at the bias towards the Patriots on this board....

But putting all that aside, and looking at the facts here, the Jets will have to come together quickly to simply survive the division.

1st year coach
rookie QB
Hold out running back
who is their top receiver?

good luck with that....

This is why you end up arguing with everyone.
Please show me where I have said that what you did last year gives you NO CHANCE TO IMPROVE?
If I did why would that make me a homer? The 2 are unrelated.

But, what a team did last year, and what it did to change it are VERY RELEVANT to what they will do this year, especially to use as the basis of a PREDICTION.
Your way, I can say Laurence Maroney will break the single season rushing record this year, and it is as valid a prediction as anything.

The fact that Miami and Atlanta had remarkable turnarounds does not make such a turnaround LIKELY it makes it POSSIBLE.
Both of those teams also made organizaitonal changes, along with coaching changes, and made dramatic overhauls in personell. Did the Jets do that? Is that part of the reason for their turnarounds?

You made a statement and I asked you to back it up.
You said they will win 9-10 games because they will win a lot of 17-14 and 14-7 games.
When I showed how rare those are, you attacked me. Nice.

You make a prediction that you cannot defend when someone disagrees, or asks you to back it up, so you attack the questioner (homer, Jet-hater, etc) and say no one can ever make a prediction ahead of time to hide from the simple fact:
You made a bolde prediciton without thinking it through, and when questioned cannot defend it. Its OK to admit that.

You're arguing for an exception without much justification. He's arguing for the rule with plenty of reasoning on his side.

Yeah, thats better than i said it.

:nono: You don't understand, Baltimore had a great defense becasue they could talk so well about themselves, which means Sexy Rexy's verbal diarrhea and Bart "let's lose it during the game while I'm talking trash to the officials" Scott are the second coming of Vince Lombardi and **** Butkus! We're doooooommmmmmmed!

exactly!

Bart Scott's 40 time from the OTAs was just released.... 2.43 seconds

why ... he could be - Greased LIGHTNING.....

So based on 2007 the Atlanta Falcons would suck in 2008 and based on 2007 the Miami Dolphins who had one of the worst defenses in that year would suck again in 2008...wait a minute ..ummm THEY MADE THE PLAYOFFS!

Andy do you realize how stupid your logic is here or do you think everyone who disagrees is wrong or how about some respect for others opinions like you should have?

Perhaps you misunderstand.
First both of those teams made wholesale changes and didnt really resemble the year before.
Secondly, a debate about predictions is only as good as the information available at the time. If someone said the Dolphins would be 11-5 because anything can happen, would be right due to dumb luck. If someone foresaw the reasons why that something so unpredictable could happen, then they would be right because they understood and predicted well.
To say the Jets will win 9-10 games because you have a feeling, and dismiss the accountability to show WHY and HOW they have improved, and I suppose, improved TREMENDOUSLY to do better with a rookie at QB, means that you want to throw it against the wall and rley on luck.

In other words, I could ignore every fact and pick a number from 1-16 out of a hat for every team, and then when someone asks me how the Lions got a 10, I'll say, remember the Dolphins, last year means nothing. Does it really matter in that case whether i was right or wrong?

The point of debate (which is one of the primary functions of a board like this) is to make a statement then try to make it hold up to scrutiny. You seem to want every statement you make to be accepted regardless of its logic. Why bother writing it if you dont want feedback, or a challenge to support it?

Getting out 40 cuss words at a manikin dressed like an official in 2.43 seconds is very impressive and shows the NYJ have a clear competitive edge heading into Training Camp...though I'll bet Channing Crowder gives a good effort in Miami after Joey coaches him up and shows him the autographed picture of Matt Light in white spandex.

By the way, it would be very reasonable to say, I think the Jets will win 9 or 10 games because I always like to be pessimistic about the Patriots and optimistic about the opponent, so even though I don't know how they will do it, I count on them being the same or better so I don't get overconfident.
I think thats really the case, or something close to that, so its OK to say so. It will keep you from looking like you are defensive, angry, and lacking an understanding of the facts other people bring to the argument.

Some more viewpoints on the State of the Jets:

CBS Sports Power Rankings by Pete Prisco Rank: 21 - "How long does it take to get Mark Sanchez ready? If he's what they think he is, they will be better than expected. If not, it's a redshirt season and they will win six games."

Sports Illustrated Power Rankings by Peter King Rank: 16 - "They were 8-3 last year after 12 weeks with a quarterback playing well but not great, and they only fell off the face of the earth because Favre couldn't throw well down the stretch. The key will be whether Mark Sanchez can adapt to Brian Schottenheimer's offense and digest it in time to play very early, like opening day. Because what coach Rex Ryan is aiming for is clear. Speaking of Ryan, the Jets will be a fun team to watch because he's going to make some lesser lights shine in roles they've never played before. It's a fun defense, and his troops will eat it up. I could see the Jets anywhere between 6-10 and 11-5."

NFL.com Power Rankings by Pat Kirwan Rank: 23 - "How fast rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez can develop is how far this team goes in 2009. The defense will be solid under new coach Rex Ryan, but the Jets need playmakers on offense, especially at wide receiver."

ESPN Power Rankings Rank: 20 - "Rex Ryan's defense is shaping up to be entertaining, but their QB situation and receiver corps are enormous question marks."

Rich Gosselin's NFL off-season rankings Rank: 23 - "The Jets went the old-quarterback route in the quest for a playoff berth in 2008 with Brett Favre. They are going with rookie Mark Sanchez this season. New coach Rex Ryan needs to overhaul a defense that allowed a division-high 356 points last season."

Bingo. No way Jets go 5-3 on the road. Jets -2.5 @ Oakland was sucker play of 2008. :D

That's an overly optimistic view of the Jets season, one I don't share.

The Jets are crap. They're media heroes. Nothing more.

4-12 or 5-11

Hmmm wholesale changes like...changing the head coach and QB? With the information available I can believe that the Jets haven't gotten worse. I think the loss of Favre is addition by subtraction, I think Favre lost the Jets more games than he won them. If Sanchez can be a game manager and the Jets run the football and play good defense I don't think they will be under .500, I believe that either they will split with both the Bills and Dolphins or they will sweep one of the two.

One more early power ranking, this one by Walter Football who ranks the Jets #21:

Mark Sanchez didn't have much starting experience at USC and he currently lacks a No. 1 receiver, so unlike Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, he could struggle as a rookie. But his future is bright. The offensive line is solid; the running back corps is stable; and the defense is very promising. Besides, has a bilingual quarterback failed in the NFL? Sanchez impressed us all by speaking a different language during an interview with ESPN. I'm pretty sure he was speaking Russian.

They also took a look at the Jets offseason and gave them a grade of "A"

the Jets made a great move getting Mark Sanchez. I don't think Sanchez is ready to play right away, but he's the face this franchise really needed.

I liked the Shonn Greene pick as well; this is likely Thomas Jones' final year in New York, so the Jets need an every-down back going forward.

My only gripe is that the receiver position wasn't addressed. But considering that Sanchez will probably receive his first dose of extended action in 2010, the Jets can wait to get a potent wideout next offeason.

The link above also has a full summary of all the off-season moves - both players lost as well as added - what were their biggest offseason needs, and how they have been addressed.

They'll be right around .500

There's been some good points made already in this thread so I'll add a few thoughts:

Their offensive line is very good, the best in the division. Four of the five linemen were 1st round picks, three have at least one Pro Bowl under their belts, and Bill Callahan did a phenomenal job of designing the run blocking schemes in his first year with the Jest. Thomas Jones is basically a 30 year old JAG, he ended being the leading rusher in the AFC with the following stat line: 1312 yards, 4.5 ypc, 13 TD's. Leon Washington finished with a 5.9 ypc and 6 TD's. The line's coming back 100% intact this season. Favre also took a lot of sacks and wouldn't get rid of the ball, I think Sanchez being pretty athletic won't take as many. Coaches will also tell him to throw it away when there's pressure.

The Jest defense won't be as good as the Pats, their defensive line isn't on the same planet. Jenkins is good, there's little else besides him. The linebackers are decent, the secondary has a lot of talent and depth. After 3 full seasons Mangini couldn't get his scheme to work, Ryan's will be a lot more aggressive. I think a ranking somewhere around 10-15 is likely though.

So between a good rushing attack behind a very good offensive line, and a slightly above average defense, they'll have between 7 and 9 wins.
