Some possible targets for 2010

The question was asked of me in another forum: "So Box, does next year look to be a better draft year than this one was?"

My thoughts:

So all the "experts" were claiming. I found it interesting how on the day of the draft Mike Mayock is complaining about what a poor draft class this was - yet prior to that all he talked about was how "deep" it was.

I look at it this way, in 2007 BB used a 2nd and 7th to trade for Welker. He then drafted Meriweather, traded the other 1st round pick into 2008 and picked up a high 4th rounder. He was reportedly waiting for LB Stewart Bradley in the 3rd round, but Philly beat him to it. With no Bradley he trades his 3rd to Oakland for their 2008 3rd (two picks moved forward, two used in trade for a veteran, 1 draft pick in three rounds). With SF's 4th he traded for Randy Moss. He used the rest of the Day Two picks to bring in depth and competition. He drafted nine total players, but only one in the first three rounds. That draft class was considered very weak by experts and from statements by BB and Pioli.

In 2009, BB drafts six players in the second and third rounds, and trades two picks forward into 2010. He then trades Hobbs for a chance to get back into Day Two. He drafted a total of 12 players in six rounds, he just didn't spend Round One money on anyone. BB acted like this draft class "was" deep, and not as "poor" as Mike Mayock wants to believe.

BB has given himself five draft picks in the first 100 of 2010, and he's looking at 5-7 draft picks in the 6th & 7th rounds of 2010 (assigned picks plus 2-4 comp picks and a pick from Philly from the Greg Lewis trade). On the surface, I'd say he thinks 2010 will be strong and deep. "If" the NFL Owners decide to hold a lockout in 2011 to force the NFLPA back to the negotiation table, the draft class of 2011 is looking at a lot of uncertainty. Were I a junior having a good year and getting the attention of scouts, I'd seriously consider forgoing my senior season and declaring for the 2010 draft. Early indications from BB's actions and the CBA lack of progress point to a strong and deep 2010 class.

I'm going to try and pay more attention to juniors and redshirt sophomores during the 2010 college season, just in case we see more of those kids declaring.

This draft class was deep for the OT position, WR, and DE/OLB, because you could still get a quality player at each of those positions in the 2nd and even 3rd rounds. This upcoming draft is going to be just as deep, but Richer toward the top. More stars coming out next year compared to this years. Think about it this way, If you wanted a QB with good starting potential you had three options, Stafford, Sanchez, or Freeman and even the last one is a stretch. Look at the RB class, Say Beenie, Moreno, Brown and McCoy decided to stay. We would have a bottom heavy, shallow RB class now wouldn't we? Say everybody comes out RB wise comes out this year, now you have Dwyer, Spiller, McKnight, Best, Royster, Blount, Murray, Devine, Chris Brown, King and Scott. All of these backs could go as High as the second round if they produce and workout well. This is also true for many other positions such as DT, QB, DE/OLB, and S. On the flip side, the Wide receiver class may suffer this year.
