Tony Pauline is one of the better draft analysts out there. Among his steals:

- Connor Barwin, #46, Houston: "Barwin is a difference-maker and considered a fringe first-round pick by most. He'll flourish in Houston's defensive system, which will allow Barwin to run loose and chase the quarterback."

- Jarron Gilbert, #68, Chicago: "Gilbert's drop down draft boards is mystifying considering the results of his senior campaign plus his workouts leading up to the draft. He offers starting potential and could turn into the steal of the '09 draft."

Among his reaches:

- Tyson Jackson, #3, KC: "Jackson made a late charge up draft boards despite some average workouts the past two months. His selection was based largely on the fact he's the best two-gap end in the draft, but Jackson comes with large amount of downside risk."

- Larry English, #16, SD: "English is the perfect fit for the Chargers 3-4 alignment, yet you cannot help but question using the 16th pick on a prospect who struggled to break 4.8 seconds in the 40 at the combine."

- Alex Mack, #21, Cleveland: "Eric Mangini traded down on three occasions in the first round, then reached for Mack with the 21st pick. Mack is solid on the pivot yet not dominant enough to justify Cleveland bypassing on so many talented players to get him."

I've heard this name enough for a lifetime but as he's in the AFCS, the vision of him chasing Peyton is . . . pleasing.

I know it's sorta fun to read these write-ups, but when a media guy says that a player is a reach before he has played should really say,

"I wasn't expecting that, wonder why they picked him, they spent hours going over these kids, they know the weakness in their own team, and contract situations,,,"

hmm, there are a lot of indicators there but I will go the easy route and call some reaches after an half hour at my keyboard,,

I was astonished when Chicago grabbed him. I was like this team doesn't pick until the 3rd round and gets this guy.

I know Cutler should be included in their draft grade {ala Moss-Welker 07} but this guy was the cherry on top.

Considering they are all unknown quantities in the NFL, they are all reaches. Sure, some could had been grabbed later and some were assumed to be grabbed sooner. The one thing I will put on my the line is that there wasn't one player taken between 23 - 32 that I felt warranted the Patriots selection and a first round signing bonus, with the possible exception of Oher and Beanie Wells.

For me I would add Beatty and Everett Brown to the Steals with an honerable mention to Maualuga and Sean Smith.

Reaches other then Al Davis picks

I might add Maybin, Massiquoi and maybe Chung

Anyone who thinks that Mack was a reach wasn't paying attention. By t#21, there were very few safe value picks left. Mack was a safe value pick at a position of need. The Browns acquired several picks and veteran depth in the process of moving down. It was a very good move.

FWIW, I have no problems with this kind of analysis. Pauline wasn't saying "this guy was a consensus 2nd rounder, thus it's a reach," he was saying "here are the characteristics of the player that give me pause at that point in the draft." Seems reasonable to me.

Give up the Barwin crusade Mayo. Like I stated he WOULD not get drafted in the 1st Rd. I also said that Enlgish was a much better OLB prospect. For now, I'm right but the jury is still out as to who will have a better career. I'm convinced Enlgish will.

Maybe. Maybe not. If the Patriots took Mike Mitchell out of Ohio in the second round, perception would be different from the media and fans. But since it was the Raiders, a reputation of losing and poor drafting stands out. I was critical of the pick and laughed for hours about it, but then I read that the Bears were looking at picking Mitchell 7 - 9 picks later and figured how unfair these judgments are. The reason being, I would give the Bears the benefit of the doubt, but not the Raiders. Same goes with Vollmer; if the Raiders took him in the second, I would laugh. Since the Pats took him, I figured they knew something good.

If the rookie salary was not so large, I wish we would have traded up to #3 and grabbed Jackson.

Overrated or not, 5 technique D line guys make the LBers that much better.
