Broncos owner explains Cutler mess to team's fans

I thought this was interesting:

Bowlen sends fans a letter explaining Cutler trade - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

I've heard a lot of people say the Bears really hosed themselves in this deal, but reading this story makes me wonder if a lot of Broncos fans/pundits think they got screwed instead.

It's been interesting watching the Broncos fans. The Cutler Ballwashers just assumed that every negative connotation about McDaniels, in any report, was the absolute truth. This approach has mostly been shattered since Bowlen went public about not being able to get in touch with Cutler and Cook, while denying that there were a lot of calls made, had to admit that he'd received one, had called Cutler, and hadn't had HIS call returned. Coupled with the brilliance of Cutler, who pulled the "I didn't want to be traded" after he'd already officially asked for a trade, the tide has turned for most Broncos fans.

As a sign of how logic is still absent in the thought process of most people, many of those Cutler supporters are still Blaming McDaniels for 'most' of the problem.

What is extremely interesting is the reaction of this board (Pats fans) and the Broncos fans/ football punditry.

We naturally buy into the "Patriot Way" and accept that nobody is greater than the team. This concept is as relavent to Many Broncos fans and football Pundits as salmon navigation.

I suspect that BB's completely foreign philosophy coupled with superior performance produce most of the animosity that has developed.

Agree. While I think McDaniels is going to be a good HC, not many coaches from BB's coaching tree (I'm talking about Weis, Crennel, Mangini, not specifically looking at guys who may have worked with him and are now in college) have had success without him, so I can see why the fans are leery of Josh (esp considering that nothing was wrong with the offense and now, to the fans, its a mess).

Also, imagine if when BB came here, before even playing a game, had he traded Bledsoe. Let's not forget about most fans felt after Milloy was released (and that was after BB had won a SB here).

I think people were more upset over the Milloy trade than the Bledose trade, even though that was right after the SB win.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was talking about IF BB had come here, and before the 5-11 season, shipped Drew out of town (before Bledsoe even playing a game for BB). I don't think people would have been so understanding.

I understood you, my comment was more on how quick the Bledsoe love was lost after Brady took over.

Based on the Broncos discussion board and also fan comments on ESPN articles, Denver fans are livid that Cutler was traded, they want McDaniels fired, and McDaniels is on a very short leash as far as their fans are concerned.

Luckily most NFL owners with half a brain pay no attention to that crap...

Saying nothing was wrong with an offense that was 2nd in yardage but 16th in scoring is a stretch. Denver's running game struggled but Cutler had elite weapons in the passing game. Guys like Brady and Manning find a way to still make that work even when their defense isn't all world... DaBears had a ground game but few legit passing options. Still they were 14th in scoring. They had nearly identical TOP. So it will be interesting to see what if anything adding Cutler really gains one...or opting for Orton (and 3 picks) really loses the other. Or visa versa... Denver's defense needs rebuilding, but DaBears aren't exactly the '85 version on defense any more. Middle of the pack (16th) in points allowed last season. I think they waited too long on their QB decision and the window on that once stifeling defense is closing. In fact absent those draft picks it's likely slamming shut.

I remember during Belichick's first season in 2000 there were a lot of fans who wanted him fired also...

Over at coldhardfootballfacts.com, they have an interesting article on how the 2008 Broncos offense had stats very similiar to the 2007 Pats. The ONLY exceptions were points and wins. Some may think points and wins matter. Similiar stats with the Pats scoring 14 points per game higher and winning 8 more games.

Considering JMcD was the OC, it would be realistic to think he may have SOME idea what a high powered, efficient offense looks like. Likewise, you have a guy who coached Tom Brady. Surely, he must know SOMETHING about QB's.

I believe that even with crappy receivers in 2006, Brady still had a better red zone percentage than Cutler with all his weapons in 08.

I shouldn't say nothing wrong, but it was an offense with a lot of weapons that had the ability to move the ball and put points on the board. I think they brought Josh in there to bring the offense to the next level, as well as fix the defense.

I suspect that Cutler's agent is the real culprit. No doubt the "franchise QB"/32 year old coach thing made seeking a new contract a must.

It seems that the team turmoil from the past few years in Denver made the owner say that enough is enough.

I have to wonder how much of this is lingering bitterness over the firing of Shanahan (I wouldn't know because I don't go on Bronco boards.) But if so, they seriously need to move on. Yes, he's one of a handful of coaches to win back-to-back SBs, but that was 10 years ago. What have they done since then? A few playoff appearances and one win IIRC. That team needed some new blood.

If I didn't hate the Broncos so much, I would actually root for them and for McD, if for no other reason than to make Cutler look like a piece of shyt and McD be validated. Truth be told, whether or not I root for them, I think this trade will hugely help the Broncos long term. Cutler is a d-bag.

The patriots had a slightly below average defense in 2007. The 2008 Broncos had quite possibly one of the 5 worst defenses in the last 15 years.

THats where the wins come from.
