What stands out to me is that maybe at this point, the Panthers don't care about getting all that cap space back.

Who are you going to spend it on?......32 JAG's? Extending Delhomme? Free foam finger night?

Carolina Panthers Team Report - USATODAY.com

According to this article in the USA today the Panthers had less than 500,000 in cap room before the released Ken Lucas. So they might need the money to fill the roster and rookies.

"The release of cornerback Ken Lucas could change some things, opening $2.37 million in salary cap space. Prior to that move the team has less than $500,000 in cap space available, the least of any team in the league"

I don't know, I usually check my facts before i spout off. You've said 10 to 20 things then tried to backtrack.

Then, it wasn't a Pete Carrol term it was Charles Haley, but never used in the eighties, then it was in the 80's, but only Fred Dean etc. etc. lol.

It is pretty amusing.

When did I say I was a football coach, by the way?

Please put, "When did I say I was a football coach?" in your sig too, OK?

I have backtracked on nothing. Pete Carroll, a former coach for the FORTY NINERS used the Elephant term here for McGinest.

Show me where I said it was ONLY Haley, if you look I said he was the most well known. I also said I don't remember it used for Dent in the 80's, like you said. FYI despite your contention, LT was never known as an Elephant.

The bottom line is that your p*ss poor fact checking consists of searching Google and Wikipedia for the layman's take on football.

You have no clue what you are talking about and can't come to grips with it.

Saying you are not a coach is an understatement.

recap last 20 pages, plz.

douches argue over semantics and put quotes in their sigs and think it makes them clever.

Personally, i didnt know these things, and thanks for sharing. However, maybe try sharing info without coming across as an a**....just sayin

I'd love to talk X's and O's, however it is hard without being questioned by someone who has already admitted he is ignorant. That is why I am getting short tempered.

Dean was called the original Elephant in SAN FRANCISCO as I said earlier, but Haley was the most publicized "Elephant".

No you didn't. I mentioned Dean 2-3 times before this where you said you didn't recall it from the 80's. Dean played in the 80's you know.

You know this stuff is written down, right?

The term Elephant was a 49er thing. LT wasn't an "Elephant" and neither was Dent. It's a 4-3 term for a pass rusher they mover around (DE). LT was a 3-4 OLB and Dent was a DE in the 46.

You may have heard it misused by a sportscaster, but I don't recall it from the 80's. It became popular with Haley.

I do; apparently you do not. I said about 6 times that the "Elephant" was a 4-3 SF term and you insisted that Dent and Taylor were referred to as such. The term was not widely known or popular until Haley in the 90's. Taylor was an OLB in the 3-4 and Dent played End in the 46.

Coach, by now you surely must have noticed the incorrect regurgitation of player names going around here? For example, if someone is going to play OLB for the Pats, that person is going to play elephant. They don't actually know what an elephant is. The same type person will then identify the three linebackers in a 4-3 as Sam, Mike and WLB because they have heard Mayock use Sam and Mike but still don't know what Will is. Everyone knows the 46 is just a crazy 10 in the box defense. Who's Doug Plank?

Since i'm just a fan, not a coach, I rely on NFL coaches and writers that know their stuff. Our own Chris Price wrote a great book and this quote sounds just like the way I described the Elephant position, in my naivite, earlier in this thread.

Under Carroll he had played the vaguely defined role of "Elephant", a role out of the 49ers system in which a pass rusher constantly moves around on the line of scrimmage, looking for a crevice through which to attack the quarterback. And Belichick frequently moved him around from spot to spot.

The Blueprint, Chris Price, page 230

Not being an X an O guy, my sense is it's generally an excuse to allow a great pass rusher to attack from different positions. Obviously responsibilities need to be covered and I don't think it's the same at all on different teams. Kind of a catchall phrase.

No. That was just a super-vague descrption of any generic pass rusher in pressure heavy schemes. Further, it was dumbed down for the average consumer. Please show me any scheme in which there's this willy-nilly pass rusher just roaming around looking for a tiny crevice to penetrate.
That's not how pass rushing works. There is no Elephant in a 3-4 defense. Nor in any of it's permutations. There is no defense that just has a designated rusher running around trying to find a post-snap crease. Think about it. Do you have any idea how hard that would be to accomplish? Not to be a ****, but nevermind the coaching, have you even played football? It's physically impossible to have a player that does that.
