According to this article in the USA today the Panthers had less than 500,000 in cap room before the released Ken Lucas. So they might need the money to fill the roster and rookies.

I do; apparently you do not. I said about 6 times that the "Elephant" was a 4-3 SF term and you insisted that Dent and Taylor were referred to as such. The term was not widely known or popular until Haley in the 90's. Taylor was an OLB in the 3-4 and Dent played End in the 46.

For example, if someone is going to play OLB for the Pats, that person is going to play elephant. They don't actually know what an elephant is. The same type person will then identify the three linebackers in a 4-3 as Sam, Mike and WLB because they have heard Mayock use Sam and Mike but still don't know what Will is. Everyone knows the 46 is just a crazy 10 in the box defense. Who's Doug Plank?

Under Carroll he had played the vaguely defined role of "Elephant", a role out of the 49ers system in which a pass rusher constantly moves around on the line of scrimmage, looking for a crevice through which to attack the quarterback. And Belichick frequently moved him around from spot to spot.

Not being an X an O guy, my sense is it's generally an excuse to allow a great pass rusher to attack from different positions. Obviously responsibilities need to be covered and I don't think it's the same at all on different teams. Kind of a catchall phrase.

No. That was just a super-vague descrption of any generic pass rusher in pressure heavy schemes. Further, it was dumbed down for the average consumer. Please show me any scheme in which there's this willy-nilly pass rusher just roaming around looking for a tiny crevice to penetrate.
That's not how pass rushing works. There is no Elephant in a 3-4 defense. Nor in any of it's permutations. There is no defense that just has a designated rusher running around trying to find a post-snap crease. Think about it. Do you have any idea how hard that would be to accomplish? Not to be a ****, but nevermind the coaching, have you even played football? It's physically impossible to have a player that does that.
