Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

The guy who you put in that position becomes your best playmaker. The player doesn't make the position, the position makes the player.

definitely not a steadfast rule. some players revolutionize the way positions are played. some schemes change the way players play. so players are good in one system and not in another. it depends on a particular players' skill set.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

Im going to stick up for Hobbs hear, he lays it on the line every week for the Pats. Thats all I could ask of a player. Yes, hes not a number one corner, but he is a good two and an amazing three.

Hobbs get far too much crap on this board. He has had games this season where he shut down the receiver he covered all game and gives up one 20 yard reception and people act like he was giving up a TD every time the opposing QB threw the ball in his direction.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

Agreed. And Hobbs is indeed a playmaker, an a very good athlete. Didn't he lead the league (at least for a long long time) on kick returns last yr? How many times have we seen his athleticism take stage? He's fast, he's tough, he has adequate coverage skills, and he has proven himself to play hurt. He needs to work on his PI calls, but I hardly see him as the reason of the Pats recent downturn in the secondary. It's a system, and he has proven himself. Once the system is improved, so will Ellis' skills also.

I agree.

But I think if you put Polamalu or Reed on the Patriots in 2008, neither one of them is any better than Meriweather.

James Harrison and Lamar Woodley are the reason Polamalu was in contention for DPOY, not the other way around.

Agreed. Unfortunately I think this is his last season as a Pat. Hobbs is going to get a great deal somewhere and hard to imagine it being here with all the contracts that will be up next year.

Wow sounds so simple....and wrong

I don't think people understand that NFL QBs complete 60+% of their passes. Almost every cornerback gets beat most of the time.

a lot of that is short passes to tight ends and rbs that have nothing to do with cbs. If your cb is giving up 6 out of 10 balls thrown his way it is time for him to go.

Great. Its Belichick who said it. I'm paraphrasing here, but the quote was something along the lines of "Asante's a great player, but most of those INTs were designed plays and other guys were just as responsible".

The defense is set up so that specific guys have more opportunities to make INTS. in 2006 and 7, it was Samuel, partially because in 07, Merriweather still had hands of stone, and Harrison was slow. In 08, it was Merriweather.

Then its time for more than half of NFL CBs to go. If hes giving up succesful plays on 6 out of 10, yeah.

Giving up a pass isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as it doesn't lead to a first down. A 5 yard catch on 3rd and 7 is a succesful play by the CB.

samuel was a great player. he was put in the position to make plays, but above that, he had the skills to make the plays. just because you have a great system, a crappy player probably wont be able to consistently do well. you need either a great player, who will probably excel in any scheme, or you need a great scheme which allows players to maximizing the skill set they have.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

One thing that I remember AJ Smith saying last year (don't like the guy, but he's pretty smart about this stuff) is that nowadays you need 3 starter-caliber CBs. In Hobbs, Bodden, and Springs we should have that. Hopefully this doesn't mean that Wilhite/Wheatley aren't coming along as desired.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

Very good signing.. things are looking up.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

Hope for good things from him. Rather have him at 3 years and Springs for 1. I liked what I saw from richardson and hope he makes it. Now the question is at safety and Tank williams.

Well, W/W were rookies last year.

Maybe they'll come around eventually...

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

Very nice to see Bodden join the team. Like many have pointed out the starting 2 might not be great, but now we have depth and history tells us how important it is for the Pats to have depth at CB.

I might go so far as to say this could be the top 1 through 5 CB group the Pats have had under BB...

(...too much?)

I'll take it a step further. Every CB gets beat almost every time if the pass rush isn't there to hurry things up. And Hobbs is an above-average starting corner in the NFL.

Re: Patriots Agree to Terms with Bodden

OK, maybe I am missing something here but what is the fascination with Bodden? I don't watch any Lions games and needed to look him up on NFL.com. So again, what's so great about a CB who was let go by the 0-16 Lions?
