So what's the consensus of possibly franchising Matt Cassel?

I see atleast Seven Teams who could use a QB, lets say Matt Cassel exeeds expectation and leads us say to the AFC-C-Game. Would people think BB and co would just let him walk free knowing QB is one of the hardest positions to develop in this league? I am begining to think not...look at the Teams who could possibly go the QB route would they rather have someone proven with up-side like a Matt Cassel who can manage the Game and more over say an unproven Rookie? food for thought.

Teams who desperately NEED a QB.

Detriot Lions = Do they really want to be selecting in the Top 5 again? How have that worked for them over the years?

Minnesota Vikings = A Game manager away at QB to be formidible contender year after year. They already have the Best RB in the League.

St. Louis Rams = Well Marc Bulger is done they might be a NEED of Young Signal Caller.

San Francisco 49ers = They could have had Matt Cassel early 7th Round in the same year they took Alex Smith #1 overall. Now with Cassel they can re-write that wrong.

Kansas City Chiefs = How Far they have Fallen.

Oakland Raiders = Russel or Dolly Parten hmmmm Who has the Bigger Bust? his bust is bigger than hers:disagreement: No her bust is bigger than his.:disagreement:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers = Jef Garcia is like what 40 now?

Most of those Teams are going to be at the Top of the Draft come April. I wouldn't mind a shot at another Jared Mayo somewhere downthere. Again if Matt Cassel exeeds expectations i think BB do whatever it takes to get something back in return...we already have Tom Brady.

It's not like we're going to wrangle multiple first rounders out of a team for him.

I don't see them franchising Cassel. The only hope is to throw some money at him now and hope his wife is eying a new car and jewelry and convinces him to take a fat signing bonus before Xmas shopping season instead of waiting until April to get some money.

I believe once you franchise the player he can sign the offer right

away and you are stuck with the $12 million. You can't make the

offer and withdraw it if no team was willing to make a trade.

If they franchise him, they need to be prepared for him to walk in the next day and sign the offer which would mean clearing 10m+ in cap space. That doesn't seem very practical.

The only way the Pats even consider franchising him is if it becomes substantially likely Brady will miss a large portion of the season and O'Connell is not ready to step up to the plate.

The trade bait theory floated around here seems to assume teams would pony up lots of draft picks while at the same time paying Cassel big dollars based on a single season worth of data. He will obviously face a steep learning curve in a different offensive system. At some point, teams will start taking note of the fact that the gems on the Patriots turn into polished stones when they play elsewhere (name one player in the last six years who has gone on to fortune and fame on another team).

I cannot think of one occasion on which the Patriots have franchised a player for trade purposes rather than on a value perspective meaning the franchise tender value was not so inordinantly high that is was worth the price to keep a valued player while a long-term contract is worked out. At present, no way is Matt Cassel worth $12 million unless his absence would cost the Pats the playoffs next season because Brady is not back.

I think enough teams in the league hate the Pats enough to not trade for Cassel, even if he was worth it. Then the Pats would be stuck with two $10M+ QBs and be screwed.

He needs to start getting more TD throws. His completion percent is good. His YPA will creep up as he's been going downfield a little more. And he has more upside than most QB his age based on his growth potential due to the lack of lifetime snaps. But he just hasn't thrown a lot of TD passes, if that increases there's no reason a team shouldn't see him as a long term solution. If it doesn't, they won't. I know one thing, he looks a lot better than fricking Kellen Clemens.

I personally think that Cassel is a OK QB. 'Great' is not the word that I would like to use for him. I'm a realistic person.

I'm not happy with his red zone and mid and long range throw. I don't like a QB who depends too much on his team D. If you spend 7 mins to get to a red zone and walk away with a field goald or empty hand, it's a disappointment.

The colts game is the best example.

I hope some team pulls a truck full on money up to his house and gives him a starting job. He's earned a shot as a starter (on another team) in my opinion.
