so watching the game I saw the stat of last year Brady being sacked 21 total times and Cassel was like 19 or something similar to those numbers.

does anyone have a breakdown of how many sacks per game and if it is decreasing, improving, or staying the same?

if he stays on pace he is going to be sacked about 50-60 times. he absolutely needs to improve on unloading the ball. granted at least he's not fumbling or turning the ball over, but he's gonna get himself injured at some point.

I think that one factor in this though is that a lot of his sacks seem to have been 1 or 2 yard losses (I think there are at least 3 or 4 that were a tossup whether it was a 6" loss or 6" gain and therefore not officially a sack, but a rush) which is basically the same as an incompletion. On many of those if he throws it away instead of running around and taking the sack, there is very little difference.

this is true. SO that kind of makes it worst. if we look at how many rushing attempts he had and how many were for a 1 or 2 gain so we can almost think of that as a sack which makes the breakdown all the more worst.

I see you decided to take the more negative approach to the data....

Re: Breakdown of Matt Cassel's sack numbers?

so take that data out. what is the NFL average for a qb getting sacked in a season? anyone have data?

and more importantly i want to see if he is getting sacked less, more, or the same?

Re: Breakdown of Matt Cassel's sack numbers?

The most times a QB has ever been sacked in a season is 76 times..(David Carr in 02')
Tom Brady has been sacked 203 times from 00' to 08'... so that makes an average of about 25 per year....The overall average I would say is 30+ per year...
Sacked 19 times in 5 games is definitely more than the norm.
The most times Tom was sacked in 1 year was 01'..41 times (Matts half there)

thanks for the research

someone has more? owww

who?

This does not surprise me. Our Offensive line was a disappointment in the super bowl. It was atrocious in the preseason, and we are all witnessing the same during the regular season. Mankins and Koppen's struggles have really surprised me. Has anyone focused on what they are struggling with when you re-watch the games?

I would think QB hits and hurries would offer better info. Ragardless, Brady can handle defensive pressure and Cassel can not.

I haven't seen somebody double clutch the ball and get sacked that much since Drew Bledsoe. The worse thing is that Cassel has more mobility, so it's frustrating to see him going down so often. He just holds on to the ball too long. Learn to throw the ball away man!

I agree, sacks are overrated in my opinion. I can think of more than one occasion where Cassel ran with the ball and was tackled by the ankles for a one-yard loss. Not a big hit, but it counts as a sack. Conversely, I've seen many QB's hit so hard it knocked them out of the game, but they got the throw off not a sack. And Brady certainly does handle the defensive pressure better; with seven years of experience I should hope he would.

Yes! Matt Cassel is the worst QB to start a game for the NEP since Drew Bledsoe. Every QB since Drew has been better than Matt.

And you see that is the problem. Matt Cassel is not as good as one of the greatest QB's in history -- Tom Brady. But that doesn't mean he sucks. Drew was a pro-bowler.

You haven't watched much Ben Toothlessburger have you? He's the number one sacked QB this season last I checked, and was sacked a great deal last year too.
The worse thing is that Cassel has more mobility, so it's frustrating to see him going down so often.
So you want him to run more?

I agree with your last remark, but how can he be holding the ball too long if, as so many rant about, he is only making two reads? How is he holding the ball too long if the expectations of so many insist he should be looking deep for Randy on every play? Let's be a little more consistent and admit that the O-line is a major factor in the sack numbers, and toss in a few gigs on the receiving corps and the RB/TE blockers too. Put in that light there is a lot of room for spreading the blame on those sacks and Mattyice shouldn't be standing alone in front of the fans hitting crap.

Cassel looks at the pass-rush after his initial read isn't open. That's death
for a qb. No better example than the 4th and two. His read wasn't open, he
looked at the rush, hesitated , stutter stepped then ran forward. All he had to
do was look up, step back to by some time and see that there were a couple
of guys open in the end zone. The reason this isn't happening is his lack of
experience. He's never played anywere until this season. Nothing replaces
game experience. He just doesn't have it. Unfortunately, this team is giving
him that experience. We really should have had a veteran backup.

He hangs onto it because he doesn't trust himself, IMO anyways. Add to that the O'Line having a bit of bother and it's just one sh!tty situation.
