Do you WANT Cassel to remain the starting QB?

Let the Kevin O'Connell era begin. Let him start this week at home against a piss-poor Denver defense.

The look on Rodney Harrison's face last night after the game and his comments spoke volumes about how deflating it was that Cassel could not punch that ball in the endzone. This team has no confidence in him and it's spilling over into every facet of the football team.

Time for a change, let's do it now before it's too late.

I agree with this. The season is next week.

Lets see what O'Connell can do.

The coaches see both QB's taking their fair share of snaps during practice each week. You would think they would know which QB is better prepared to play the game. For us to speculate O'Connell would make better decisions is utter stupidity. We have no idea where he is on the learning curve, how much of the system he's absorbed, etc. Your asking a rookie to come in over a bench player who at least has seen or practiced in the system for 4 yrs. And don't give me that crap about Bledsoe/Brady in '01. At the time Brady was not ready so they scaled back the game plan for him considerably and Bledsoe's turnovers were going to eventually cost him his starting job.

Somebody has to say it... we are looking at missing the playoffs if we continue the course. It's time to make a switch, we have to at least try.

I'm sure that comes from a lack of experience. But, why should we pay for that? This
is a team built to contend for a championship. I'm not blaming Cassel at all. You have
to blame BB for not having an experienced backup. If I see another 6yd pass on 3rd and ten, I'm going to puke. On the flip side, I doubt if Gutierrez or O'Connell will be
any better.

Well they could have kept Asante and been over the cap and we all know what a difference he made last February when the OL was peeing it's collective pants with Brady under center unable to reach Moss. Thing is beyond his inability to make the plays when we really needed them (gave up a TD and missed a game clinching pick) according to Christian Fauria they never really liked his game or his attitude believing he was poor in run support and and not a wrap up tackler. Which is why I felt even absent hindsight they should have just tagged and traded him back in 2006 and maybe now we'd have some real help from that trade. But I think with 2 firsts in their pocket before Goodell removed one and of course before making the Moss trade and having it work as it did they felt they had sufficient draft picks not to risk needing him in 2007.

Good post. I don't blame Cassel either.

I had hoped for some steady improvement based upon him practicing as the #1 QB and a 2002 short range type offense. But the SD game seemed bring about situations he has never faced and he looked lost.

BB had him at #2 at the start of the season and I don't see BB making a switch now.

We can all choose to believe that for the past two years no one better Cassel has been available at a reasonable price in free agency or for a trade.

Garcia had NO INTEREST in coming here, he wanted to start, and BILL WOULD NEVER PAY THAT $$$ TO A WHINING EGO DRIVEN LITTLE PRICK. Huard isn't a prick but he left for the same damn reason... Who you want to cut to pay another $1.5-2M to a veteran backup who may do no more with a system that is slightly dysfunctional at the moment? Cleveland just upset the Champs with a second hand 3rd string QB Billick passed on who saved a FO's it's jobs last season, and was about to lose his and theirs if they lost this week...I'd have flipped him but Romeo had his reasons for sticking with him even as a 1st round draft QB with endorsement contracts sits on his bench...because anderson knows his system and personnel and can make all the throws, just not consistently quite yet. Some never get consistent but oddly end up the players unhappy fans often long for (he did thus and such in another system in a brief stretch or 5 years ago...) LOL

I don't think he's the only reason we lost to SD or Miami, but he's also not helping us win, and I don't think this team is going to be a real points producer - which it needs to be given the obvious deficiencies on D - with Cassel at QB. I'm in favor of seeing what O'Connell can give us.

That's because you weren't being realistic. Some of us realized a long time ago that Brady covered up a lot of little nagging faults by his very existence here. And the better weapons and protection you got him the greater your margin for error elsewhere would be. They got him some more elite weapons in Moss and Welker, but they failed to improve the protection significantly which had the added effect of impacting a running game. But hey, who needed one in 2007...although by early 2008 there were hints even Brady still might.

So now you subtract Brady from the equation and add just about any other QB on the planet (including some other elite ones absent familiarity with this system) and what do you reasonably expect to net? Matt Cassel isn't making this team worse, he's simply not Tom Brady nor is anyone else and that is what it takes to cover for this team when they are playing well, let alone when they are not. The best you can hope for is veterans stepping up around a guy who won't hurt you. But they haven't yet mastered doing that with any consistency.

Maybe they yet will, or maybe they can't or won't. That is the intrigue for this season. Anyone who can't grasp or accept that might as well pack it in. Unloading venom on Matt accomplishes nothing. He's just doing his job as best he can. O'Connell or Culpepper (LOL) wouldn't alter the equation substantially unless they made it worse.

I don't think anyone knows that a newbie QB would be any better.
So, IMO, the "no"s are potentially advocating jumping from one frying pan
to another.

For the love of God, get rid of Cassell, he just doesnt get it. A QB who runs and dives head first on 4th down in front of a pile of the opposing team's players AT THE 3-4 YARD LINE IS A TOTAL GOOFBALL!
