Bailey Zappe was the quarterback for most of the evening for the New England Patriots, and he was never able to get anything going all night long.

The loss still stings. But the Patriots played the Philadelphia Eagles tough all game long on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

The crowd roared. He waved to the crowd. Then he sprinted down to the south end of the field. When he got to the end zone, he screamed his familiar “Let’s go!!!!!” with perhaps a few colorful words thrown in. He then ran back to the podium at the north end zone, hugged his three children, and the ceremony began. Tom Brady came back home after three years. Finally.

Look at the bright side. The last time the New England Patriots started 0-2, they won the whole thing.

The Cowboys pummelled the Patriots, 38-3 on Sunday at AT&T Stadium, sent Mac Jones to the bench in the third quarter, and inflicted most every malady possible on this once great franchise.

Right now, the Patriots are a bad team. In terms of Patriot history, those of us with long perspectives are starting to get bad flashbacks.

Once again, the Patriots did not have enough material to win a game, and this game was very winnable.

This game had all the familiar story lines of this season, right up until the final drive. And then, all of a sudden, the old winning Patriots came back to Gillette Stadium.

Despite some good moments from the Patriots in this game, including inducing two turnovers by the Dolphins, the Patriot offense did not make enough plays like they did last week and the Miami offense is way too much for the Patriot defense to handle. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle each caught long touchdown passes as the Dolphins throttled the Patriots 31-17 on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Patriots should be about losing. Play just well enough to compete, but just bad enough to lose.

What you the Patriot fan should be wondering about right now are basically two things. Did the Patriots subtly play to lose on Sunday? And if they do succeed and draft first next year, who will they take and will it be a quarterback?

The Patriots are probably thankful that it was raining all game long. It makes for a better reason for losing than “they were probably tanking”.

They teased you for a few minutes, but in the end the better team won and the losing team did what they do this year.

The Patriots were offensively inept for most of the first half, but Denver led only 7-3 at the intermission. Because the Patriots were allowed to hang around, they were eventually able to forge ahead and take a two-score lead into the fourth quarter. The Patriots dropped 20 points on the Broncos in the third quarter alone.

The Buffalo Bills are nowhere near the championship level team most everyone thought they would be. The biggest telltale factor is that the Bills had four takeaways against the Patriots and won by only six points. In the end, the Bills are clearly better than the Patriots, and held on to win 27-21 on Sunday at Highmark Stadium. The game was not as close as the score would indicate, as the mistake-prone Patriots had their fans yelling in anger for most of the game.

Jerod Mayo is now the new head coach of the Patriots. Moving faster than you can say “Rooney Rule”, the Patriots quickly replaced Bill Belichick with their former linebacker and current linebacker coach.

At a recent Super Bowl halftime show, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones told the crowd “We could have played at the first Super Bowl!” He’s right, as the Stones were about four years into their slice of the British Invasion at the time of the inaugural Super Bowl.

Going into the 2024 season, Jacoby Brissett should be the starter. Brissett is a former Patriot who is well acquainted with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterback coach T.C. McCartney from their time with Cleveland. Brissett, along with Van Pelt and McCartney, can and should serve as sounding boards for Maye. This right here is far better than whatever passed as coaching for Jones over the last few years save for Bill O’Brien or Josh McDaniels. Maye comes into an environment that is already better than what Jones had.

If you wanted to see a lot of Drake Maye, we hope you didn’t blink. It was mostly an evening of hoping Maye and Jacoby Brissett didn’t get injured, showcasing Bailey Zappe for a likely trade, and seeing what all Joe Milton can do. When the evening ended, Brissett and Maye didn’t get hurt, Zappe perhaps caught someone’s eye, and Milton may be the second coming of Michael Bishop.

More Drake Maye. More Drake Maye. Everyone happy now?
August 26, 2024 | Bob George
Drake Maye outplayed Jacoby Brissett by a mile on Sunday night at Commanders Stadium. Brissett lasted only the first series, hurt his shoulder on a sack, and got out of Dodge quick. He spent the rest of the game on the sideline with a headset on and not wincing in pain.
