Unless you get a stud deep threat or a player who can be more than just a deep threat, deep threats are overrated. In all honesty, you only really use a deep threat a handful of plays. An outside threat like Lloyd is more important because they have to be accounted for on every play.
13 points yesterday
Lloyd had 6 YAC in playoffs
Brady has to be perfect on all deep passes because our deep threat Welker can't jump or extend his arms past his ears. (Sorry Wes...luv ya still)
Just give Brady viable options in all sectors of the field.....How this roster is constructed, the Pats have no down field threat to WIN the 50/50 battles....its all on Brady being perfect over the top.
Can you answer the questions I posted. How come the deep threat didn't change things in 2007 or 2009 postseason if this is the problem? And who was the deep threat while we won 3 super bowl rings?
And how many "stud deep threats" are there in the NFL? And how many of them are making less than $10M a year?I assumed the stud part was an obvious understanding among all of us.
Of course the Pats need a stud deep threat. That is one of the major factors that the Pats need.
That and a stud strong safety and a stud defensive end for a pass rush. Other major factors that are sorely lacking for the Pats.

You would honestly consider any of those guys a significantly better 'deep threat' than Lloyd or Welker? Heck, even Matt Slater
Give me some names. All of them on their rookie contracts.

Im one of the few that believes that lloyd had a very good season. Brady has said that he gets open a lot of times and doesn't get the ball. I also believe that Lloyd would be much better suited in Branches roster spot. He's a very reliable possession receiver and he was great at finding the soft spots in between the corner and safety. At the same time a lot of what I saw the Pats doing earlier in the year with the back shoulder throws would be much better suited for a faster, bigger wideout. I agree that a deep threat shouldn't only be "a deep threat" but rather a complete receiver with the ability to command safety help or beat you consistently 1 on 1.

How many stud deep threats are there in the league? Most teams don't have one. Maybe 5-6 teams do.
Comparing a 1 trick fall down pony verses 2 over the top versatile pass catchers with wiggle to avoid tackles that work all areas of the field from screens behind the LOS to crossing patterns to posts? Lloyd is planning his bailout in the huddle. Thanks to the ineffectiveness of the Lloyd "threat", Welker is now the Pats deep threat. I'd dump Lloyd in a split second if it meant getting Welker back in the slot with a legit mid to deep threat that can win the 50/50 battles. Gronk, Hernandez, and Welker are first down machines so why play them out of position(ex. Welker as deep threat?) so Lloyd can perform his catch and drop act. Versatility....not utility!! This receiving corp is flawed and seems to get exposed that last playoff game every year.
You really need to get over this "need" stuff. The 49ers don't have a stud deep threat, and they're in the Super Bowl. The Ravens have a deep threat, but he had fewer yards than Lloyd this season and didn't have anything over 25 yards yesterday. The Falcons have one of the true deep threats, but they didn't get any further in the playoffs than the Pats. The Lions have the best deep threat, and they didn't even make the playoffs.I agree. But, the Pats are in need of one either way.

If the Pats absolutely need a deep threat, why is there seemingly no correlation between deep threats and making it to the Super Bowl?
