    #3 Jersey

    There are four choices:

    • $3,317,000—first- and third-round picks as compensation
    • $2,611,000—first-round pick
    • $1,835,000—second-round pick
    • $1,200,000—no compensation, but right of first refusal

Which one would you give him? Right now, I'd use a first-round tender, minimum.

    2nd rounder.

He's a solid player, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if another team shipped us a 2nd for him. And I think we can get comparable production for much less than $2.6 million. The reality is, all the nice stats and production BJGE had, you can say the same thing about Laurence Maroney in 2007 (and probably 2009) and we moved him without blinking (both had very nice metrics and stats per Football Outsiders). I think this says more about the running back position than it does about the players.

We got rid of Maroney after a few years of mediocrity.....not after a 1000 yard season, which Lawfirm just had.

    LoMo 2007 - (13 games) 835 yards, 4.5 yds/carry, #6 back in DVOA on FootballOutsiders
    BJGE 2010 - (16 games) 1008 yards, 4.2 yds/carry, #2 back in DVOA on FootballOutsiders

They aren't that far apart in terms of production.

Admittedly, BJGE brings other things to the table that LoMo did not - like intangibles. But is BJGE worth $2.6 million? We've gotten in trouble recently for overpaying for our above-average, but not great, players like Sanders, Kaczur & Tully Banta Cain. I'd rather be more cautious going forward rewarding players on our squad when some portion of their production may be circumstance and/or due to the cast of players around them.

Maroney in 2009 = 84 DYAR (24th, total play for the year), 1.2% DVOA (play-by-play) rushing [against easier than average Ds]; 9 DYAR, -3.7% DVOA receiving
Maroney ended up on IR in 2008
Maroney in 2007 = 199 DYAR (7th), 16.7% DVOA (6th) rushing; not enough catches to measure

    Green-Ellis in 2010 = 354 DYAR (3rd), 26.2% DVOA (2nd) rushing [against stronger than average Ds]; 31 DYAR, 17.8% DVOA receiving

That's not my point. I'm saying they didn't get rid of Maroney after a productive season, they did it after a few years of mediocre play.

BJGE just had a productive season, so you can't compare the Maroney trade to Lawfirm.

Per Ian Rappaport on twitter, they used the 2nd round tender.

Yeah I was just thinking the same thing. In fact I'm kind of hoping somebody claims him. That's a great return on a UDFA.

That would leave us a nice gaping hole at RB.

The Patriots already proved they were stupid enough to leave the Law-Firm on the sideline in favor of Woodhead in the post-season. Nothing the Pats do surprises me anymore.

So I assume you disagree with the 2nd round tender, then?

The last few games after we won the playoff spot were basically grinding giving BJGE his 1000yd season. I got a sense that this was his moment in the sun and BB let him have it. Normally our cupboard wouldnt be so bare with RBs, and we will survive if he leaves. RB is the easiest position to replace after all.

Kind of already have one. The only RB on the roster is Woodhead. At this point in time the RFA doesn't gurantee a player will be with the team that tendered him. If nobody offers a contract to Law Firm then the Pats will still have only 2 RBs on the roster. They need to add a few via some combination of draft selections and free agency, and adding a 2nd round pick for him could go a long way in rebuilding the OL.

With 2 RB's (3 if Faulk doesn't retire) you can easily pick up two through the draft and/or free agency.

With 1 (2 if Faulk doesn't retire) you have to pick up 3 Rb's unless you plan on getting a top RB.

Not at all, that's about his worth more it wouldn't surprise me if they let him go because they were stupid enough against the Jets to use him sparingly even though he was incredibly effective when his number was called.

Good choice on the 2nd. Hopefully they can sign him long term for somewhere between 2-3M per

I chose 1st but a 2nd is a good move as well since he won't get picked up for a 2nd rounder. The only team I could see picking him up would be the Colts with the 54th pick.
