They're almost completely mutually exclusive, and I'd be a lot more interested in getting a guy who defends the pass better than the run.
So what this thread is telling me is that big safeties that can hit hard but can't cover are essential and that the Pats need one, but big linebackers that can hit hard but can't cover are bad and that the Pats should get rid of them.Spikes, btw, can take all his swagger to the unemployment line because he's a huge liability because he's slow and can't cover, period. He's a one dimensional player, and while he may be a good in the run game in the passing game it's like playing one man down. You think Spikes was going to run Kaepernick down? If we retain Talib, LB is the single most important position we that needs addressing in the offseason.
Lawyer Milloy. John Lynch. Rodney Harrison. Troy Polamalu. Bob Sanders. Safeties that set the tone for their defense, and will decleat you. This SB will feature Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, Dashon Goldson, and Donte Whitner, four mean safeties. We need a guy like that, who won't make stupid mental errors the way Brandon Meriweather did. I thought we were getting that when we drafted Patrick Chung, but apparently not. Devin McCourty is a nice ball hawking defensive back, but he is not a tone setter.

People need to make up their damn minds.

That's bad reasoning. Spikes destroyed plenty of guys this season despite his 5.05 speed. If you're too slow you can't hit hard. Since by definition you're not catching the players.
After watching him get smoked by Julio Jones (although even Welker would have blown by him given how badly he played it), is that surprising? Heck, the 49ers didn't want to either.well dashon goldson came in for a visit when he was a free agent, but the ownership doesn't always like to open the wallet up
It sounds like you are asking for someone who will placate you by sounding like a tough guy in interviews.
Pats lack strong fiesty leadership on defense which can challenge the coaches and even brady's offense on the team. Wilfork mayo are great leaders but somewhat passive. Need the other kind to make it a complete group,

Spikes, Hightower, Mayo, and Wilfork have that attitude, that confident swagger, that physical presence that says "you don't want to mess with me!"
It would be nice to find a safety and a DB with those attributes as well, I admit.
