Brady is 30. He only has a couple more years of play on the same level.

How soon do the pats need to start looking to draft his eventual replacement?

Brett Favre was 30 in 1999.

Trent Green played at a high level until the age of 35. Meanwhile, Tom Brady is better than Trent Green. Enjoy the next five years.

The beautiful thing about the Manning/Brady rivalry is that Peyton is sort of the older brother in the scenario. We get to watch him do everything 2 years before Brady does. Obvious this is no exact science, but it is clear the Colts are not too worried about Manning's replacement so I wouldn't be either.

    way to live in denial

    he'll be 31 next season

I don't think drafting someone soon to begin developing them would be a bad move
if the franchise become unable to move on when brady starts to decline, it will decline along with him

    #24 Jersey

Give me a break. 31 is nothing. When he's 36 then you can ask. There is nothing to deal with now that there wasn't when he was 26. Only a major injury would slow him down for the foreseeable future.

A bit too early to start looking for a replacement. With the way the salary cap is set up we cannot afford to invest heavily in a backup and should only do so when Brady is nearing the end. I think they start looking for a viable replacement in the 2011 draft with the plan to have the new guy learn behind Brady for 2 years. Kind of what is going on on Green Bay with Rogers.

TB is going to play effectively until he's 63 so we're not even half way there yet. < Puts head back in sand>

QB success skews much older than other positions. An NFL QB is NOT old at 31, or even approaching old age.

We can always just have Vinny T. come in for a couple of years if we have to;)

It seems to me that good QBs nowadays are far from exclusively great college QBs. Drafting high on QBs seems to be a complete crapshoot and you are just as likely to get a franchise QB in the later rounds. I think that starting in a couple of years, the Pats should start drafting a QB in the 5th or 6th round every year and see which one rises to the top rather than putting all your eggs in one basket with a 1st or 2nd rounder that rarely pans out as predicted and has buried numerous franchises.

Tom Brady ages at a far slower rate than any mere mortal.

I agree, Giselle keeps him young. ;)

We are definitely feeding a troll here, but John Elway was 30 in 1990. Subsequently he went to the Pro Bowl six times and won two Super Bowls. So, I think Tommy has a few good years in him before he and Giselle shuffle off to the old age home. To take the question more seriously than it deserves to be taken, I would think that, barring serious injury, early retirement or an unexpected indication by Brady that he might go after a ridiculous big bucks contract elsewhere, I would think that the Patriots wouldn't begin planning for his successor for another four or five years.

    Just to save some time:

Bart Starr was 30 in 1964
Otto Graham was 30 in 1951
Johnny Unitas was 30 in 1963
Joe Montana was 30 in 1986
Terry Bradshaw was 30 in 1978

    Carry on.

 OMG, he's that old. Cut him now, he's surely on the decline. Or maybe we can pick up a late round pick from some unsuspecting team for him......

And on a similar topic, how many years did Roger pitch effectively after the Sox got rid of him?
