Good BSPN article on Mac

Says a lot of what I've been saying. He's broken, and things are bad enough it's not clear who failed who. That is, did Mac fail the team or did the team fail Mac? We might never know.

Whatever you think of Mac....this article is a good read on a few fronts.

Thanks for posting the link. This stood out to me:

"The offensive line in front of Jones is patchwork, and it shows: New England has a league-worst pass block win rate of 44.3% -- that is to say, the line is able to sustain their blocks for 2.5 seconds on less than half of their dropbacks. And the weapons he's throwing to comprise one of the NFL's most uninspiring units: the Patriots' receivers are dead last in yards of separation (3.06) and second-worst in wide-open percentage (18.3%)."

But also:

"He's not at the level of a Mahomes," says one scout. "If they could protect him better, of course he'd be a better player. If he had better things around him, he could be a better player. But that's the difference. He's not gifted enough to overcome the lack of supporting cast."

None of this is a surprise. The question is, what was Bill thinking?

I agree but your question might mean something else to me, What was BB thinking? I wonder why we have so much cap space when he could have plugged a few holes with it. Did BB really over rated Parker that much? JJSS that much? Did Mac's struggles surprise Bill? We have to be naive to think everything caught Bill by surprise. Is all the cap space next year because the 2024 FA class is so much better? Or because Bill never believed in Mac and didn't want to waste cap dollars until Mac showed something? What was Bill thinking is a great question if posters don't then start assuming BB somehow became an idiot in the last two years. There is a lot of depth to that question.

The entire offense is a back alley abortion and should be wiped from the Earth for eternity

Mac needs magic mushrooms in his life.

"Yards of seperation" is sometimes (often) a misleading stat. It's how far the WR that the QB throws to from a defender when the QB throws it. It can be a sign the WRs aren't fast enough or aren't disguising their routes well enough, running bad routes, etc. But if the QB waits till after the WR is open, but the defender caught back up, or lobbed the ball allowing the defender to catch up, or throws the ball short or off target making the WR to go back towards the defender to catch the ball, or throws to a blanketed WR when someone else is wide open that still counts as a lower "yards of separation" stat. Or if the QB throws the ball before the route has had a chance to develop as designed, either because the O-line allowed a QB hurry, or the QB screwed up and panicked that also counts as a lower "yards of separation".

I'm certainly not arguing our WR's are fine. Just pointing out that a bad QB or bad O-line can have a negative influence on that stat. It's not purely a measure of the WR corp.

Well written article.

He is a bad NFL quarterback. I do feel a bit sorry for him. The expectations were off the chart when he came in to NE. Having a good rookie season, oddly ratcheted up the pressure and expectations.
BB is responsible for breaking him mentally and not supporting him.
Bill broke him so bad that Mac had to ask for advice outside the organization.

Bill's decisions have destroyed both Mac and the organization over the past 5 years.
No other billion dollar business in a capitalist society would put up with what Bill has done to hurt the organization for 5 straight years,

There is zero % chance that Kraft allows him to stay, unless he has lost all his marbles.

Or doesn’t want to pay bill and another coach.

If we draft a QB in 2024 with a Top 5 pick expectations will be even higher. T Lawrence was the first overall pick so expectations are so high he will fail at Jacksonville? So we should trade down into the 2nd round to draft a QB to drop expectations? What?

Ratcheted up the pressure in Y2? Nothing changed. Mac had to read defenses, set his feet, find the open receiver, etc. Having to perform your job at a high level is part of professional sports. This is nothing unique to Mac. Mac sucks. Mac is not a starting NFL QB. Move on.

BB broke Mac. BB ruined Mac. The excuses start. Maybe Mac does not have the talent to be a NFL QB. Over three quarters of the guys drafted to be a starting NFL QB fail. Every failed QB is because a head coach failed and ruined them? BB is responsible for Mac's actions - BB made him do it. No, Mac is a weak minded person who is not a starting NFL QB. Billion dollar business, lost marbles, and a capitalist society? What? Mac failed because BB made him do it, because the USA is a capitalist society. Lol

The whining and sniveling to defend Mac is embarrassing.

Disney has been putting up with Iger, Kennedy and Fiege for many years now.

The yards of separation stat is a snapshot measure of WR capability independent of everything else, accounting for speed, quickness and technique. That is my understanding of how it's assessed.

Articles like this always make me wonder if they get done because agents are calling in favours.

Why? The article was an objective assessment of why Mac has failed. It doesn't whitewash anything or make excuses for his poor performances. In a nutshell, he is incapable of transcending a subpar surrounding cast with individual play.

It's a defend Bill at all costs thing. In some fans eyes if you just say "well Mac just sucks otherwise we would be good" it washes Bills hands. The roster is good enough to win, we are just missing a QB.

Which we are missing a QB! It's just we are also missing A LOT of other pieces too.

The article begs the question, given Macs lack of physical capabilities. Why would Bills methodology to build a roster be putting subpar jags around him and asking him to make it work.

It's as if Bill honestly thought the system was why the Patriots won with jags and not Brady elevating and making up for his poor roster mistakes.

It also should give you pause about having Bill be in charge of the roster building for whomever we draft next year. Because it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that every other team built an offense around their young QB differently than Bill did

Funny how all the “lolz our weapons are fine it was all Mac Jones’s fault give us Zappe and we’re a good team” talkers are quiet this week after the Zappe offense not only got shut out but couldn’t even get in the freaking red zone once against the worst pass defense in the league.

It’s like weapons matter after all to a QB. Any QB. Always did always will. Maybe when we get a good GM we’ll get some.

There's a lack of critical thinking going on, on this board. And the worse our record gets the more rabid the defend Bill at all costs! Crowd is getting.

Mac has been god awful this year.

But that doesn't mean juju/parker are suddenly 1500 yard guys and comparable to Hill/waddle with another QB. It doesn't mean we stick our head in the sand and pretend Bill put together a Superbowl roster full of pro bowl talent! And Mac is just holding them back

That's how some posters are acting. I don't need to suspend belief and pretend that juju is somehow the same as AJ brown. Which is what some posters are trying to make the correlation.

Realistically bill put together a 6--11 team at best. And the Poor QB play is making it a 2-15 team. Should we be happy building 6-11 teams?
