A nice review by Curran - though one that we've effectively researched for him in past years leading up to the draft (in our Best and Worst Draft pick threads)

Curran does have some fun with the topic though, suggesting his "PICKS WITH NAMES SUITED FOR OTHER ENDEAVORS"

Just one question though - Leonta Rheams, Actor? What the hell does he mean by that?
(Do Tom Curran and Tom Brady have something in common besides their first names?)

One other thing I found intersting was that Curran, like everyone, slams Chris Canty as a draft bust (he was) but then goes on to say he wasn't as bad as everyone believed.

He also says that Chris Canty is a perfect illustration of why you should never draft based on need.

I say Chris Canty is a perfect illustration of why you shouldn't let idiots run your draft board. He was the friggen 6th CB taken in the 1st round... certainly not worth an over-reach - maybe not even a 2nd rounder.

There's nothing wrong with factoring "need" highly into the equation as long as you're not doing something stupid like taking the 10th best guy at his position in the 1st round.

So I think Curran's wrong about using Canty as a poster boy for those who say "take the best player" without considering need. The "best player" is subjective - "need" generally is not.

You can miss on the "best player" premise as well - and there are numerous Patriots - and even BB - examples of that.

Dishonorable mention: Marquise Hill, DE, LSU (second round, 63rd overall, 2003). Is he gonna play or what?

First off, he was drafted in 2004, not 2003.

Secondly, this seems to be a knock at the Patriots' coaching rather than Hill himself. Either way, and this isn't the first time, people really seem to be forgetting the quality of players in front of this guy. 3 first rounders. Also keep in mind that when Hill was drafted, Warren had only started a handful of games, and Wilfork had just been picked hours before. Jarvis had yet to sign an extension. We can sit back now, 2 years later, and see that the Warren/Wilfork/Seymour line worked out perfectly. Yes, some may say that Green was a much lower draft pick and has a more prominent role on the team, but keep in mind he's a 3rd-down pass rusher. Hill is a goal line run stopper. Give me a break.

SO, lets totally ignore the fact that injuries last year forced the Pats to carry only 5 DL at times because they needed the extra bodies at LB and DB. Makes a lot of sense. OK. No, it really doesn't make sense.

The fact is that one of the reasons that Hill got so little in the way of playing time is because the Pats had so many other issues. Particularly at LB and DB. You could also look at RB and the O-line as places where the Pats had issues and had to carry more players than they normally do. Because of this, it would be extremely hard for Hill to get playing time. Especially with Jarvis Green ahead of him. Green is a player who would start on any other 3-4 Defense in the league.

I thought Curran's piece was missing an importnat piece of info, namely who drafted whom.

I really only care how the current administration has drafted. Whay Bobby Grier and Pat Carroll did means nothing anymore (unless that player is still around.)
