Peppers chatter persists - Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

After doing some thinking. I think the Patriots should tag and trade wilfork(he only plays 50% of the defensive snaps and should not be paid top dollar unless he plays more than 75% of the snaps. We should switch to the 4-3. We dont have the personnel for a 2 gap 3-4). I rather spend the money for Peppers than Wilfork. Lets trade Wilfork for a first and grab Rolando McClain and in the second round we could grab another DT with one of our second rounders.

Good thinking. Let's kick out a guy that we know for a fact works in the system and bring in a guy that has never played OLB in a 3-4 and pay him top money.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

It's February 17 and you already decide we don't have the personnel for 3-4...

Well if you trade Wilfork and AD and sign no one, then I guess yeah we don't... or do we

Although I think the Pats may go after Peppers, I don't know how much credibility Carucci has on this issue.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

You missed the OP's point. His solution is to get rid of our best defensive player and sign a player who might fit it with our youngsters in developing an entire new set of defensive schemes.

And we'd see the same thing we did last year: teams breaking off huge runs at the expense of the right side of our defensive line. Actually, it would probably be both sides of the defensive line because I would assume that either TBC or Burgess would play the other DE spot.

As i said before, If we get rid of Vince we will go to a 4-3. Would you give a NT top dollar who only plays 50% of the defensive snaps(If he was a three down NT then i would be thinking differently). Wilfork wants haynesworth money. Tag him and trade him.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Switching to a 4-3 with Peppers and either Burgess or TBC as the DE's would simply not be a good idea. If we do this, I hope we get Brady some top calibur receivers because we're going to need to score quickly after the opposing offense completely controls T.O.P.

I would love to see your proof that Wilfork wants a $100 million contract.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

He plays more like 60% not 50%, and those 1st 2 downs are HIGHLY valuable. They also, incidentally, have a high impact on how manageable the 3rd down is and thus effects the success rate.

Seriously you want to become a worse defense just so you can see this mythical pass rush you've created in your mind that Peppers will instantly create all by himself.

And Wilfork wants hanyesworth money according to whom exactly?

Yeah, screw everyone else and the years of system and coaching expertise. Let's just make this all about Peppers...

Instead of all the threads that will continue to appear every time some mediot rehashes what he thinks he thinks or what someone else says he thinks, wouldn't we be better served to just have a sticky thread for persistent Peppers chatter...:deadhorse:

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

In his mind Wilfork wants Haynesworth money.

I would like to know the last time a team ripped a big (as in 50-60+ yards) for a TD up the middle of the Pats defense before Ray Rice did it in the Wildcard round. After that, please do some math and tell us all how often it occurs.

Look, folks, there is a reason why it's been nearly impossible to run up the middle on the Pats for the past decade or so. That is because of players like Washington and Wilfork. One can argue that the only reason teams had more success this year (which, honestly, wasn't much more) was because of the departure of Seymour which allowed teams to bear down on Wilfork. Even then, it was still extremely difficult to run up the middle on us. If we lose Wilfork and go into a 4-3, it suddenly becomes MUCH easier to not only run up the middle against our defense, but also to both sides of it as well.

ON TOP of all of this, Peppers has made it pretty clear that he feels his talents are better served standing up in a 3-4. How would it make any sense whatsoever to pay him all this money just to come in and do a job that he's not satisfied in doing? So much of this thread makes little to no sense that it's not even funny.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Still don't get why folks are anti- 4-3. Just as an example, here is 'Lina's ranking in YPC allowed with Peppers. (of course, keep in mind that Kris Jenkins was there too. )

    2002- 1st- 3.7
    2003- 12th -4.0
    2004- 12th - 4.0
    2005- 4th -3.6
    2006- 7th- 3.9
    2007- 4th -3.8
    2008- 23rd - 4.4 (no Jenkins)
    2009- 20th 4.4 (no Jenkins)

IMO a quality DT (or two) needs to be dropped into this D IF JP comes here.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Vince is complaining that he doesnt want to be tagged. Thats 7 mil for the year and if he is complaining about 7 mil then he probably wants more than 10 mil a year. Also, I heard on PFW in Progress that Vince only played 51% of defensive snaps last season. I think it would be better if we switch to the 4-3 if we lose or tag and trade vince.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Vince doesn't want to be tagged because he wants LONG TERM security on top of staying with the team. That means a multi-year contract. Complaining about being tagged does not necessarily mean that he's complaining about the money that comes with it.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Your logic is amusing. He doesn't want to be tagged because it's a 1-year thing, he wants long-term security.

Vince missed 3 games with injury last year, and I'm sure they added that into the "51%" miscalculation.

Re: Reiss Blog: Peppers chatter persists

Over the past two years, Vince has averaged about 65% of the snaps and 35 plays a game. Don't let people tell you his value is marginal to this defense.

    Re: Reiss: Peppers chatter persists

If we can't have both, keep Wilfork, imo. It's nonsense to think Peppers is going to change everything. A lot of other little things need to happen.

Let's not cut of our nose tackle to spite our defense.

Is he still sticking to his story that he reported earlier this year that the pats were going to trade a 2nd round pick for Peppers?
