Ryan Mallett trade speculation

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

You are correct in that he hasn't seen or played against a top-notch NFL defensive scheme.

PP, forget "top-notch". He hasn't played against ANY NFL scheme.

So far, he's played several late game preseason game series against street free agents who (because of the lockout) had less than 5 weeks in a team's camp.

He saw better prepared and more complex defenses IN COLLEGE.

Maybe we can send him to Dallas. They need QB help. lol

Now, THERE'S a team that would have no hesitation in sending us a #1 this week for Mallet!

Jerry doesn't have the animosity and obsession with the Patriots that Polian/Irsay have.

Would the pats even trade with the colts? Too early to deal mallet wait a year or two and he ll be looking a lot better. Hoyer on the other hand...

Simple....because while mallet has a future, the colts need manning to win a game.....

I would do it

Right, because a 350 yard game with 2 TD's and a 102 rating the first game back in a year is so terrible...

Yes, he threw a costly INT that was to Revis' side (stupid). You also have to take into acct that Dez (the talented but idiotic) Bryant was gimpy and probably should not have been out there at that juncture. It appears as though Bryant was supposed to cut back in, but couldn't run too well, or just stupidly missed his assignment (go figure).

I agree with some of your 'crazy' thoughts, lately with your wanting to keep LeVoir. But I don't agree with the thought that Romo is some 'horrible' QB, or that he played terribly last night.

Even though Romo made a bone-headed play (which he sometimes tends to do), he picked apart one of the best secondaries in the entire NFL last night through 3 quarters. He is obviously their best option, and made them look somewhat dangerous at times, considering that he was out for a year and their team was not exactly scaring anyone.

350 yards, 2 TD's/1 INT, and a 102 rating (against the NYJets, mind you) does not equate to "Dallas needing QB help."

And FWIW--I really don't even like him. I think he's basically kind of a douche. But to suggest that Dallas needs a QB is ridiculous, there are many teams that would rather have him than some of their current options right now. And that's just being fair.

Quoting stats are useless when it comes to Romo. He is a born loser. Just that stupid grin he has when everything is going to hell would make me want to punch him in the face if I was his coach.

Dallas will stick with him because of the stats, but he'll never not be a loser. Is there anybody who expected anything other than that pick at the end of the game? One guy called it right away and I alluded to the fact that Romo would screw it up too, although I was expecting something more like the missed snap on the 2nd to last play of the game.

And the sad thing is, you can't really blame Romo for the loss because Dallas made so many other bad plays but he is good for the worst play at the worst time way too often.

Again that doesn't mean he doesn't have the tools or the ability to learn, as opposed to Kevin O'Connell who never bothered to learn how to identify and instead depended on his legs to bail him out, a bad habit he brought from SD State and never got rid of.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

Mallett for 2012 1st and 2013 2nd or no deal.

Absolutely insane. More like 2012 2nd and 2013 4th.

Mallett has done nothing to increase his value since he was drafted. Nothing to hurt it, but nothing to improve it.

He was drafted in the 3rd round; 74th overall. If the Colts had called on draft day what would have that pick been worth assuming the Colts were only willing to part with 2012 picks? Colts 2nd? Maybe Colts 2nd and 5th.

So today trading him today for a 2012 2nd and 2013 4th would have been the same as trading the 74th pick overall on draft day and a fair deal that is NEP standard operating procedure.

Right, and that is precisely why it is NOT adequate compensation today.

The value of a player who has been through a training camp and preseason with a team is different from his value on draft day. (Look at Danny Watkins, who was a healthy scratch yesterday. Think he'd get you a 1st rounder today?)

In Mallett's case those changes can only be in the positive direction. If a player has had a successful camp, done some good things in exhibition games and secured a roster spot -- especially with a loaded and demanding team like the Patriots -- that can increase his value. If there have been key injuries around the league that have increased demand at his position, that can increase his value. If some question marks that hurt his draftday stock have been addressed...etc.

There's obviously a lot of truth to what you say, and I don't necessarily disagree. I do not think that DAL will ever make it to the next level with Romo at the helm, and yes--I do think he's a douche etc. But there's also no way that the Cboys are going to start anyone else either, at least not until they draft or trade for some kind of proven vet who is deemed better. I don't know who that could possibly be in the next yr or two, besides maybe a draft choice that works out.

I did think that he moved the ball very effectively last night against a tough secondary. I also think that he makes a high number of mistakes at times too though.

You're right, stats are almost useless for a guy like him, b/c he does so well at times and then makes a key mistake at a horrible moment--but there have been a ton of 'worse' QB's in the past yr or two--and there still are currently.

I couldn't imagine DAL interested in a guy like Mallett for instance..

Ugghhhh!! KOC memories :(

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

I'm not saying Romo is terrible, but he did blow the game. Seriously.
To me, when it mattered most, he looked like a deer in the headlights. Literally, did you see the look in his eyes? That game was theirs for the taking, to say the very least, no?
That fumble killed them. While the idea of sending Mallet to Dallas was meant as a joke,
I think most would agree that Romo is developing a serious reputation for blowing it when it matters most.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

Romo always finds a way to lose games not the defining characteristic I look for in QB. If there was a clutch rating his would be 0. Hes a fine QB when the game isnt on the line.

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

don't be suprised to see the opposite.......Polian won't hesitate to have the team hit bottom in order to turn it around.....

Andrew Luck....the next prospect in the mold of manning, elway, etc.....

don't be suprised to see the colts actually trade a couple of their higher priced guys away......clean house since it is going to take them some doing when they bite the bullet on the deal they just made with manning......in order to get rid of him, they will likely need to get rid of freeney also (who will be too old to be of significance by the time andrew luck would develop....) reggie wayne would be another one....

everything lines up......the colts invested high picks to protect mannings blind side this year, so by the time luck is in there, these guys (castonzo and ijalana) will have some time on the field......they draft luck, then make a deal to get into place to draft micheal floyd...... because that's how polian does it

fair.

Please. In baseball terms, Tony Romo would be called Mr. April.

He has a bladder and colon control problem during 4th quarters.

Talk all the stats you want - - keep him in your fantasy league, he'll get you lotsa points.

Even famed jock-sniffer/loves everyone Peter King called his performance last night one of "doofus proportions".

[/U]

So why the HELL was he throwing to him????? Repeatedly! Over and over and over again.

Everyone in that stadium and in the viewing audience could see Bryant couldn't run or cut. The only people stupider than Romo were the coaches sending Bryant onto the field.

If Jerry is smarter than them, he gets a QB who can walk and chew gum at the same time. As mentioned before, I'm not yet sure that is Mallet.

But PLEASE leave the stat argument for Romo (and the other Calvin Schiraldi's of the world) behind. He has the yips.

I never said he doesn't. I merely said 'we don't know yet'.

You, on the other hand wrote "However, he has demonstrated that he has the tools and the ability to recognize, based on what he has shown this preseason."

Sorry, I'm not buying that until I see him actually face a real-live NFL defense. You made a statement that was simply flimsy given that he has faced a real NFL defense yet. It's fine to say 'I hope he can demonstrate that he has the tools and the ability to recognize an NFL defense'. However, you wrote that he already has.

I completely agree with you. Dallas will sink or sink with Romo.

You forgot the possibility of them doing a dead man's float with Romo. :p

Re: Rumors Galore!! Could Ryan Mallett be traded to....

Ryan Mallett is an ideal fit in the Patriots' system, but if he did get traded to the Colts, he would do fine. Depending on what the team gets in return, the team should consider it. There are plenty of quarterbacks with strong arms in the draft every year, so Mallett could easily be replaced.
