OT: Colts lure Kerry Collins out of retirement...

Good move by the colts, I thought they might do this. He's not going to put up monster numbers but you can win with him. If he gets the playbook down the colts can still be a solid team with him throwing to reggie wayne and dallas clark. Although they better hope Peyton gets back soon, Collins is good enough to compete with the texans and probably beat the browns maybe the bucs & chiefs. Addai being healthy would be huge too.

Collins was a solid player for the Giants. But he's older, less mobile and still suffers from Favreitis.

If the stars align then yes, he will be better than what they have. He won't lose a game for them. The question is can they win enough WITH him to make the playoffs.

If he starts the whole season, probably not unless titans, jags&texans suck again. I'd say 7-9. Still though, probably nobody out there on the streets who is better aside from MAYBE favre and I don't think the colts want to go down that road lol.

The Colts are looking like a team in trouble for the long term. As patschick pointed out, they've had a pretty good string of questionable draft picks in the first rounds. They also look to be getting old at all of the positions that made them perennial contenders (RDE, LDE, O-Line, QB, etc) and don't look to have the draft acumen that will let them load up on draft picks the way we did to re-build the team on both sides of the ball. No one team has had it's deficiencies offset by one player the way the Colts have had. With the rumors that Manning can still barely turn his neck floating around out there, and now this signing, the Colts look to be a team that could fatally stumble out of the gates.

Colts boards up in flames. calling for Polian's head :)

I just spent about 20-25 minutes there....... It was glorious. Thanks for the heads up.

As for the move. I see why they did it, but still scratching my head. Why is Painter even on their team then? Seems like a wasted roster spot, if they don't trust him enough to prop up the team for a game or two.

btw........ in case you all forgot. Collins ain't that good of a QB. Now he's gotta come in, learn a precision, timing offense in about 2 weeks, and them be expected to succeed. NO CHANCE.... even against the Browns. I smell a blowout against the Texans.

If Manning is out indefinitely Collins gives them an opportunity to compete. He's a solid starting QB who'll do a good job of utilizing the MANY offensive weapons on the Colts.

I can see more two tight end sets with Tamme coming on in Clark's absence circa 2010 and Addai being utilized in the run game more now.

Solid acquisition by the Colts.

The Colts have a pretty tough opening slate of games...

@Hou
Cle
Pit
@TB
KC

Save for maybe Cleveland, all those teams would be tough even with Manning at full health, let alone recovering or even off the field. Lots of good running teams versus a deeply flawed run defense. They lost @Hou last year, barely eked one out vs KC... might get ugly pretty quick if Manning's not up to snuff. Could lose 3 or 4 of those, never mind games @NO, @Bal, @NE, and vs Atl. Plus, they often split with Jac.

I'm expecting a tough season. Nothing to get excited about, though. Last time they didn't play well, they wound up with Freeney in the draft. Watch them get Alshon Jeffery or Justin Blackmon or something.

All starts here. Mark my words. Manning media circus is gonna make Favre look like a child.

Tampa Bay stinks. What did 28-0 at the half mean against the starting defense? So Colts go 2-3 with eleven to go. They're toast.

collins just got surrounded by the most talent he's had since leading the giants to a superbowl

he must be happy as hell

This.

As I have pontificated, these guys had to know that Manning wasn't going to be able to go, and they HAD to know that this sort of situation was developing.

Why they elected to pay Manning instead of trading him and starting the rebuilding with all the cash they gave him is beyond me.

Yes, I know. It's Manning. He's the franchise, etc. However, Snyder's Redskins ought to have served warning to every team that the "win it all now" mentality isn't the way to succeed. It is fraught with peril, as Danny Boy has shown time and again.

Polian and Irsay ought to have been building for the future, rather than putting it off and putting it off and hoping everything worked alright. Like the story of the Grasshopper & the ant, winter is fast approaching and the pantry looks awfully bare right now.

That franchise deserves better.

That's my 2-cent's worth, and I'm sure that others mileage will vary. :)

I completely agree with everything you wrote...except the bolded part.

They open @Hou, Clev, Pitt, @Tampa. With a a rusty Manning or elderly Collins if they can split they'll be fine.

If Payaton doesn't play those 4 games, I can't imagine a record better than 1-3.

People were saying the same thing about the Steelers whilst R-Burger was serving his suspension in 2010 with Charle Batch and Dennis Dixon at QB. Falcons, @ Titans, @ Tampa, Ravens for a 3-1 record.

Collins is a better player than both those QB's and a lot depends on the rest of the team, not just the QB. All Collins has to do is be an effective game manager giving the Colts a chance to win. He doesn't have to be Peyton Manning.

The Colts problem will be their defense (let's face it though Freeney and Mathis give everyone headaches) not Kerry Collins.

Difference.......Pittsburgh had a defense....The Colts secondary is a joke,my friend who is a Colts fan is disgusted that they did not do much back there in terms of signing anyone good.

Did I not mention the Colts defense would be the problem, not Kerry Collins (assuming he plays to a similar level he has for his career)? There's too much offensive power with a suppose upgraded offensive line for the Colts offense to fail.

I'm sure Manning will be fine.

Who says the Colts OL is upgraded? And what offensive power? Manning is the power behind that offense. The running game is a crapshoot. Part of that is on the OL but part of it is on poor drafting... Aside from Saturday, who is probably entering his last season, the OL is JAGS and/or raw rookies who didn't have an off season to bulk up or be coached up - including one who almost has to start at LT... Manning has always made that OL look better in pass protection because of his quick release and timing offense. Not to mention with Mudd and Moore finally out of the picture... Wayne is unhappy and showing some wear. Clark is solid but his rapore with Manning represents the lions share of his value. The young WR's are a mixed bag, including inconsistent and injury prone... And all any of them know is Manning...

BTW Mort tweeted that Collins deal is for $4M. Coupled with Manning's cap hit that's $20M on the QB position against a $120M cap...and $27M in cash...

Manning better be fine, and sooner than later. If not, both their offense and defense will be the Colts problem...

Clark, Wayne, Garcon and Addai are all very good players who can succeed without Manning playing. The Colts added 2 decent young linemen to their rotation. That's better than what they had in 2010.

You're hating on the Colts because they're the Colts.

(Unfortunately) I think you're probably right.

Even if they start 2-2, Peyton is still going to give them the best shot out of all 4 teams to win their division.

I can understand feeling as though the Colts aren't "as" good, but am a bit surprised to see so many totally writing them off already. Even if Manning is out for another month, he only misses a game--maybe two at the most.

He can be out 6-7 more weeks, and only miss a few games. I think this injury story is a bit over played.

I am adamant that Kerry Collins and Gary Cole are the same person.
