Meriweather PI Call

If officiating was even close to balanced, the Steelers would have one less SB win this decade (vs Seahawks) and the Patriots would have two more.

Heh.

This thread is in serious need of a video. Here's the PI call at 1:41: NFL Videos: GameDay: Patriots vs. Steelers highlights

I think it's pretty clear Meriweather bumps the receiver before the ball gets there

It also seems clear that Meriweather is turned and facing the ball. He is clearly in better position and is actively making a play on the ball. That being said, I had this pegged for category (e):

Actions that do not constitute pass interference include but are not limited to:

(a) Incidental contact by a defender’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball, or neither player is looking for the ball. If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference.

(b) Inadvertent tangling of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.

(c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players.

(d) Laying a hand on a receiver that does not restrict the receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

(e) Contact by a defender who has gained position on a receiver in an attempt to catch the ball.

Is this not the case?

There is nothing clear about that video in regards to the BS PI call. And no, it wasn't "pretty clear that Meriweather" bumped the receiver.

What is clear from the TV replay is that Meriweather was running across the field and Wallace ran into Meriweather because Meriweather was in position before Wallace. Wallace initiates the contact and, in turn, falls on his arse after a spectacular losing his balance act..

You can't really see it from the NFL link, but I thought I remember that Meriweather cuts down in front of the receiver's path and bumped him before the pass got there. Pretty simple call, particularly since Meriweather wasn't in a good position to make the catch.

Meriweather wasn't in good position to make the catch because Wallace ran into him.. That is what the TV replay that shows a close up of the two of them clearly shows.

Saw it the same way but somehow knew the zebras would do something to give the Squeeler's a break. Hope we don't get that same terrible call next week. Justice was served by them missing the field goal though!

Guaranteed next week, Indy will basically be given 1 td by the zebras, I've come to accept it.

I am surprised at the volume of commentary here. It was a clear pass interference call last night and is so today. Merriweather pushes off with his right arm denying Wallace from having a chance to make a play on the ball.

Wrong......meriweather ran right through him to get to the ball....the defender cannot initiate contact that way before the ball gets there

Brandon outran him to the point of the ball, he actually ran around the receiver to get to the ball, was in position to make the play and got called for a BS PI. Merriweather did not run through the receiver.

When you watch that clip, there is NO WAY that BM committed pass interference. He beat the receiver to the spot by a step, and the receiver runs into him. Clear as clear can be. At first I thought "no call" would have been the best ruling, but now I think it was offensive PI.

Speaking of bad calls, how about when Chung hammered the WR at the end of the 1st qtr short of the 1st down, and when they come back after commercial, Pitt has a 1st and 10?

The 2nd quarter start was weird to me too. I thought maybe they challenged and re-spotted the ball while I was changing my anti-freeze.

But who cares? The Pats won! Take as many cheezy 1st downs as you need, Steelerettes! Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

The game last night really brought back memories of 2003 and 2004 when the Patriots had to routinely beat the opponent AND overcome the refs....

It has to be embarrasing to be the Steelers...playing at HOME..and getting beat so badly that the refs were throwing flags on every other play to stop the clock or to prevent the Steelers from being blown out even more...

I did enjoy NBC putting up the statistics of the "Last time the Steelers were beaten this badly at home.....was to the Patriots"

That doesn't show anything other than him reaching back with his arm to feel for the receiver, that is legal.

The NBC replay showed the entire play and it was clear Brandon had position. FYI you can touch the receiver you cannot turn him, hit him (knock him off his route), push him, block his route by slowing down in front of him etc...

Merriweather did none of that. He got flagged for playing good defense.

I could have saved myself a lot of typing if I had just read down a few posts. :D

Meriweather has as much right to the ball as Wallace does. Wallace ran into Meriweather. The "push-off" you are talking about was Meriweather's reaction to Wallace running into him to begin with..

Damn, I wish I had my DVR hooked to my computer, I'd post the damn thing..

NFL Game Center: New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers - 2010 Week 10

watch this video starting at 1:45.

You see the ref rule the pass incomplete. Then all of a sudden he sees the Pitt WR whine about a flag and he decides to grab a flag and throw it.

What a huge pile of crap that was. Clearly b.s.

I've been watching it over and over since it's so damn amusing and we still won.

Did Mike Pereira join patsfans yet?

Thank you for posting definition (e) of what is NOT pass intereference. I would call this play a textbook example.
