Re: TBC's contract terminated (merged)

They can renew his contract without cutting him if that were the case. All they'd have to do is nullify the original contract and replace it.
I do not believe that is possible. They cannot modify a contract within a year of signing.

Could Banta-Cain be back soon?

By: Mike Reiss

The Patriots terminated the contract of outside linebacker/defensive end Tully Banta-Cain on Monday, but one wonders if it is just a temporary move.

As a seven-year veteran who was on the opening day roster, Banta-Cain is eligible for termination pay. Furthermore, there is no significant cost savings for the Patriots, as Banta-Cain was playing on a reasonable one-year, $620,000 contract that counted even less on the salary cap.

Because of those factors -- as well as Banta-Cain's generally solid production -- this move could simply be procedural.

With specifics of Banta-Cain's initial one-year contract not known, it's difficult to assess the team's thinking.

Overall, it's hard to imagine they cut him based on production. Banta-Cain was tied for the team lead with three sacks. He's played in all six games, with two starts, and has been a solid contributor on special teams as well.

Because of this, the feeling here is that we haven't seen the last of Banta-Cain. There has to be more to the story.

No offence to anyone who's speculating about a trade, but, if you had to clear a roster spot in a hurry after yesterday what about Lockett, B (in on one play, makes tackle, 15 yard penalty for 'unsportsmanlike conduct')? I can't believe that TBC was no. 53 on the team.

Theres no way a big trade is coming

I agree that a big trade is not likely in the works, but with interest in Galloway reported, would it really surprise anyone if they traded him for a pick and used the spot for Tate?

This move makes no sense if it was cutting him for the sake of cutting him. Tbc made big plays at the end of games vs the bills and broncos. I hope this isnt similar to the vrabel trade where we think something else will happen but doesnt. I really hope we didnt let him go to sign some street free agent for special teams or to make inactive.

I hope we are not bringing Dana Stubblefield out of retirement:rolleyes:

none of this makes sense, as long as we win... that is all that is important.

Tully was notified that he was cut during an interview on Sirius satellite radio NFL 124. Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan baited him into trying to say something negative but he wouldn't bite. Ryan took the opportunity to bash BB and mentioned the 30 second goodbye phone call Richard Seymour received before his trade to Oakland. Kirwan somewhat stuck up for BB by mentioning that the players always play hard for BB and that when Parcells cut or traded players he gave them "maybe 32 seconds". Anyway Tully was a classy gentlemen after being notified of his termination in front of millions of listeners. Hope he comes back.

Re: TBC Cut??

I'm astounded and perplexed.

Wild speculation here. No facts to back it up other than a theory based on events.

Could there have been some pernicious atmosphere developing in the locker room, maybe after the Big Sey trade? Something that made BB move up the timetable for bringing in Seau weeks earlier than planned? Maybe BB tried everything and finally feels that he absolutely had to put his foor down hard on vocal rebels.

/tinfoil hat off

This means what....that Tom Jackson was onto something after all???  Hobbs, traded....Vrabel, GONE....Seymour: "later dude".....Brace inexplicably drafted....Adalius, benched......the Players' Union somehow involved....umm tin foil hat failing........

Seriously, I've had an uneasy feeling along these same lines beginning around the time that Seymour was traded and looking back over some of the off-season moves. Hope I'm just crazy.

I hope there is a mistake or misunderstanding someone where, we don't treat humans like this. This will truly be classless.

What happens if you cut a player and then re-sign him. Could

he be re-signed to a multi-year contract for more money

and a small bonus?

I want to be clear. I am not inferring that Kirwan and Ryan told him he was cut, merely that he learned of his release during the interview.

yeah...nothing odd like this ever happens with the Patriots...this is so strange and out of character for the way BB does things.

except maybe for the Milloy cut

or maybe the Law release

or perhaps the Willie McG incident

oh..and maybe the Seymour trade

or letting Asante walk

or trading Vrabel

or Bledsoe to Buffalo

or letting Branch walk

or Hobbs going to Philly

or letting Daniel Graham walk away to Denver

just so strange and out of character....

1) Many of you examples nobody saw coming, at least with respect to a specific player at a specific time. E.g., Seymour, Milloy, Vrabel, and Hobbs.
2) Many of your examples everybody saw coming. E.g., Graham and Samuel.

This one would fall under category 1, obviously. Also, it's not the trend of letting players go, that's well established, it's that we let seemingly secure players go entirely unexpectedly. It's the "too early rather than too late" thing that takes everybody by surprise, including, I suspect in this case, you.

Good diagnosis.

nah ..I was being sarcastic

sorry Strudel

This is just a head scratcher to me. Couldn't they get a 7th round pick for him? They must have tried to shop him without success.
