Gasper: Mayo out 6-8wks, possibly less - sprained MCL- grade 3

This loss is huge. They'd already lost Bruschi and Vrabel from the LB corps, and Mayo was probably the most promising young player on the team.

Are there any decent MLBs out there they can pick up? The Bears just lost Urlacher, so Belichick had better look around fast.

The Jets, Falcons, Ravens, and Titans all coming up soon... Eesh. The middle of the field could be a playpen for opponents...

In the 43, we have Guyton. In the 3-4, we have Thomas and Guyton. Ninkovich can also take some reps. I'm sure that some even think that Alexander could take reps.

Obviously, this is a circumstance that the staff has considered.

Perhaps, we will add someone, but the addition could be at ILB or OLB.

I'm honestly taking this as good news. Brady's playing and we'll get Mayo back this year.

I think everything will be just fine.

It'd be too easy for everything to be smooth... let's call Brooks. When he breaks, we get Seau, then Bru...

I'm just thankful he isn't lost for the year.

OK, there are 5 more games until the bye week, after we win this week. So he should be back for Miami or Indy.

We went 11-5 without TFB for the entire season. We should be able to survive and be in good playoff shape for Mayo's 6-8 weeks.

Another option is a big nickel approach with Chung (if he is ready). Not so much replacing Mayo, but getting the best players on the field based on opponents and situations.

Re: Mayo out 6-8wks - sprained MCL- grade 3

If true thats terrible. But I bet its more like 4-6 since they said he was expected to return sooner.

Agreed, the title is more terrifying than the article

my guess is 4 or 5

Re: Mayo out 6-8wks - sprained MCL- grade 3

This is as massive a non-Brady loss as we could suffer. This is extremely discouraging. They'll soldier on, BB will do his best to work around it, but he was the SIGNAL-CALLER on defense, the best player out there, we've just let Seymour go ('though I approve of the trade) and we are already iffy at LB. A horrible, horrible, lame effing injury. Infuriating.

Re: Mayo out 6-8wks - sprained MCL- grade 3

4 weeks, 6 week, 8 weeks, whatever. We are losing our best defensive player for some tough games. We don't play a bad team until Week 7 against the Bucs.

Denver is a bad team.

The timetable for this injury does not make sense to me. Polamalu TORE his MCL and is diagnosed to be out 3-6 weeks. Mayo SPRAINED his and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. When did a sprain become worse than a tear?

Meh...

It is what it is. Adjust your gear, and soldier on.

11-5 last year with no TFB and a good list on IR as well.

Let him recoup and come back after the bye.

Boston has got to be in the top-5 cities for Prozac sales based upon pro-team performances. :)

Agree...makes zero sense and I only play a doctor on TV or stayed at a Holiday Inn last night...

A sprain is a partial tear so it could be that what the Steelers call a tear is actually a lesser sprain than what the Patriots call a sprain.

or it could be that the Steelers are misleading everyone about polamalus status/ giving a hopeful estimation of return, where as the pats are looking at the worst case scenario.

I agree. In fact, the reporting of a grade 3 tear is interesting when you look around the net and see that grade 3's are defined as complete tears of the MCL which in a lot of cases require surgery.

Who knows at this point.

Medial ligament sprain

Oright makes sense thanks...

I doubt Bruschi would've retired had this happened during the preseason. So, is it really that far fetched to consider Bruschi coming back? They showed him on the jumbotron last night in his street clothes near the end of the game. He looked like he was itching to jump into the game.
