Re: Mike Reiss: Pats are in contact with Jason Taylor

I just think you read the quote incorrectly. He didn't say he hates the Pats. It says, "After so many years..." Emphasis on the AFTER.

==========================================================

QK, forget the hate part, he said he wold have a hard time playing for the Pats.
I am not going to fight this battle, it's irrelevant, I was just busting PS23.

Kinda joking I was. I think JT wants to play in Miami, I am also sure he would like to play for the Pats if not Miami.

Amid all this clamor for Jason Taylor I continue to ask where he will play. I am talking position not Team here. AD is not a strong-side OLB. Neither is Jason Taylor. As a matter of fact, his move to SOLB so the Phish could play Porter at WOLB there was the reason he was shipped and departed to the Redskins.

So what everyone is talking about, in reality is a rotation of AD and also JT at the same position. IOW the OLBs on the field will be Woods and AD, or Woods and Taylor.

What is the big benefit, other than giving AD a blow?

Or is the plan to move AD back to ILB? Sitting Guyton and Mackenzie. Or forcing Tedy into retirement.

Think people. Time for discussion...

Do we know for certain Thomas's skills do not translate to SOLB? My limited understanding of the position tells me that; one needs to be physical enough to re-direct the TEs off their pattern, fast enough to run with the TE when needed, fight through the double team in both setting the edge and pass rushing. I imagine, the best combination of strength athleticism.

Sounds like AD to me.

I also point out that in 2005, weren't we forced to put both Colvin and McGinest outside? Weren't both classic WOLBs?

jason taylor played most of hes career faceing some of the best LT in the game and won most of the time so i dont think WOLB or SOLB is that big of a deal and in BB D any one can blitz he just maybe to old and slow to do what pat fans want him to do be a 15 sack guy agan as far as him leveing the fins i just think he wanted to dance with the stars and bill parcells dont like players geting more attention then him thats why he did not like T.O

I would much rather have Peppers on the team than "Mr. Clean" Jason Taylor.... I think he should return to Miami.

I'd rather have brand new Porsche than my Saturn Ion. But alas, I would rather have the Ion, plus food, plus medical insurance, plus a roof over my head, and at least one of those things would need to be sacrificed in order to get the sports car.

Taylor would be a much better value and would contribute to a better TEAM in my opinion.

Wasn't AD playing SOLB before he was injured last year? I believe he was, and that Vrabel had been switched from left to right. I think AD can play any of our 4 LB positions except WILB, he has the strength to defend the run, speed to cover TEs and backs, and speed & power to rush - so he can pretty much play anywhere. I think AD's production & importance the last two seasons has been hugely underrated [not that I'm saying you are doing that w/ your post].

Are you sure AD isn't a SOLB? I know he played WOLB, but that was because he was more suited for that position than Vrabel (Vrabel isn't fast enough to play the weak side). But I think AD is built to play the weakside if he is moved there. He is big and strong enough to take on even the biggest LTs. In fact, I think he could improve the position (as much as I always loved Vrabel) assuming Taylor is on the other side because AD adds a speed element that Vrabel just didn't have.

I don't know if the Porter comparison is valid because Porter is 15-20lbs lighter than AD and not as strong. Porter had problems shedding blocks from LTs when on the weak side. I don't think AD would have the same problems because of his size and strength. Plus Porter was coming off an injury plagued season.

Would AD be better personally if he stayed on the weak side? Probably. Would the team be better with him moving to the strong side and putting Taylor on the weak side? Also, probably. I am more concerned on how the team does than an infividual player.

We DO NOT NEED Jason Taylor.

1. Over everyone about our pass rush sucking, Did anyone forget Rodney Harrison, Adalius Thomas, Wheatley and Crable getting injured? Hell, Vince Redd was on the field sometimes!

2. Before all that, our pass rush was pretty good. Remember the AD sack against Favre?

3. What happened to, "Finally our defense is younger woo!" Jason Taylor is 34... I hope he signs somewhere else and we use our own YOUNG OLBS such as Crable and Woods.

Why can't AD play strong-side OLB? It's impossible? He doesn't have the skill-set for it? He doesn't LIKE to? Please elaborate.

We maybe do not need Jason Taylor, but we need a pass rush, and Pierre Woods, Shawn Crable and Vince Redd have a long way to go before they can prove to be the answer.

And since when did one sack make for a good season? Are you aware of the numbers our OLB's posted? Or our sack total full stop?

I am going to ask again, slowly...

What can a 34 year old OLB that was pretty much a bust in Washington, bring to the table more then Woods and the highly anticipated Crable?

I'll repeat it again slowly, what have Woods or Crable shown to prove we don't need another body opposite Thomas?

And further, this guy was injured in his down year - seriously injured. How is everyone SO dense as to keep missing that fact?

More-over, he was being played out of position, and finally he forced his own release by refusing to agree to attend camps. They didn't cut him for sucking. That would be because he doesn't suck.

Put on his proper end on limited snaps with the goal of tearing QB's a new one, this guy will be a beast. BEAST.

5-10 sacks and some QB pressures.

I know at 34 there is a chance he is way best his best but there is also a chance an injury year derailed him last year and he could be back on track.

Now I ask what did a 38 or 39 year old LB do who came out of retirement to play for us?

He broke his arm which could have happened to a 20 year old the same and than he returned for another season only to lead lead the team in tackles and the LB group of a SB team.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see him again this year...into the regular season, of course.

Are you sire that Woods, Crable, or TBC could be a full-time starter? I sure am not at this point. Until they prove otherwise, I am in the camp that we do need someone to line up opposite AD whether it is Jason Taylor, Julius Peppers, or someone else that no one has talked about yet. Although Vrabel had a down year last year, he has left a hole at that position with no lock as his heir apparent.

As for Taylor's age, his presence would be an one to two year stopgap measure, not a permanent solution. The Pats have done that plenty of times whether it was Ted Washington, Fred Taylor, Keith Traylor, Otis Smith, etc.

Besides, the Pats are getting younger in a lot of areas, but it doesn't mean they are going to abandon older veterans all together. The defense has gotten younger and faster, but even a slowed downTaylor does bring some speed to the position and some veteran leadership to all these younger players.

JT to make a decision in 1-2 weeks? I recommend that he het on the phone and talk with world class veteran decision maker Brett Favre for tips on how to be decisive.

Would probably end up rotating them until one of them gets hurt, which will likely happen. All in all, though, I agree with you. For all the people who are going nuts about how Woods won't get enough sacks, I can't help but wonder what they're comparing him too. Aside from 2007, Vrabel was never a sack machine, even when the Pats did have a strong pass rush.
