Vrabel traded to KC, compensation still unknown

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

This strikes me as something similar to RAC's interest in Willie McGinest - a guy who is getting older, still has a little bit left in the tank, but will be a needed locker room presence, setting the tone for others... making him worth more than just his football skills.

In this case though the Patriots are the ones who will get the benefit of the draft picks, rather than an over-paid contract (though we'll have to see if Pioli makes it worth Vrabel's while to come to town with a new contract too)

Re: Vrabel traded to KC?????

I have to wonder...was Pioli the conservative half of the pair? Perhaps BB is a little faster to drop the axe when he sees a player sliding and thinks he can train up a replacement? It seems to me that, compared to some of the other older players the Pats have kept the last few year Vrabel still has at least as much in the tank.

Not that I'm saying it's a bad move, but just wondering if this is an indication of what's to come from the new regime...

This is a VERY interesting point. It would make some sense, when you get right down to it. It could also be Pioli's replacement (whos name escapes me) is also more aggressive. BB's quote about feeling "invigorated" at the combine suddenly seems a ton more relevant.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

This could also mean that Crable's shown a lot of progress.

Crable? Crable has been injured and had no way of showing progress, let alone "a lot of progress." My money is on the staff being happy with what they saw out of Pierre Woods before he got hurt AND having a replacement lined up (in addition to how stacked the draft is with OLB types).

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

I wonder if this is one of two things:

A) Pats see Vrabel declining and are trading him for some mid-round value, with a replacement in mind
-or-
B) This is part of a larger deal involving Matt Cassel, which will become public at some point today

?????????????????????

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

Wright. Also, I didn't necessarily say he will be cut. I think a trade is likely, perhaps part of a Peppers deal.

Wright is a UFA. Peppers is too light to play DE in the 3-4.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

Not a huge shock, but definitely a minor one. Vrabel is getting paid more than his worth. I figured the Pats would have gotten an extention done.

I wonder if the rumors that the Pats are going after Peppers hard is true. Why else trade Vrabel without a contingency plan? The addition of Peppers would definitely make Vrabel far too expensive for his cap number.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

I guess some of us were right that pass rusher is a top priority. vindication feels nice

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

I am just glad to see hime gone out of the AFCE.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

They like Crable and Woods I suspect.

Which is fine with me!!!

I hope the pats don't go into the season as woods as there starting olb, I think he's a good backup and a situational rusher not a starter. The position needsto be upgraded.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

How much do we save under the cap by moving him??????

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

I and others had noted how he lost his burst last season. He was never the fastest guy, but his closing burst on a quarterback was fantastic. With that gone, he was just a wily veteran that could get by on smarts and instincts, but was no longer an impact guy. I thought he'd stick around for one more season, working both inside and out, but this move doesn't surprise me. I'm guessing a 4th or 5th round pick in compensation. I don't think this signifies a move for Peppers as much as it does that the Patriots like someone in the draft that they think can play soon, and like the young guys they've been grooming. Hopefully they use his money to get Leigh Bodden and Mike Wright signed, and find a new long snapper. I hate losing Paxton more than Vrabel.

anyone who thought vrabel was an above average pass rusher over the team's last 24 games doesnt know what they are talking about

but just to put it on the record, i loved vrabel and really appreciated all the hard work and effort he put into this team. will be truly missed, but we are on to bigger and better things in 09

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

could be a precursor to a cassel for peppers deal.........peppers flanking warren seals up that side for awhile

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

I kinda feel sick after this. A great member of the team I'll surely miss

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

If they are clearing space for Peppers, Cassel has to be dealt first. Cassel could be part of a larger trade with KC, or there could be a deal in principle to ship Cassel somewhere. Whatever happens, I think there is MUCH MORE news to come out in the next few hours today...

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

you may be right, BUT

why would they announce vrabel is traded and not cassel? doesnt make sense to me.

The news of the trade is based on him being seen in KC getting his physical. its not an official announcement, so there could be more to this that we don't know yet.

on a side note, anyone think this might be for Gonzo... stright up?
Similar age as Vrabes' both can contribute about the same on their respective sides of the ball. Gonzo wants out and this would make alot of sense to help Pioli stamp his mold on the Chiefs.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

You're right, I predicted that he would be CUT for the cap savings. Getting any value for him at all is a bonus. Sounds like a win-win move for both the Pats and KC.

Unless you are getting a better alternative for him, this trade makes no sense.....and no offense, Woods and Crable 'aint it. Serioulsy, the man was the mike, played outside and inside and was a veteran leader. He was one of the most verstaile players on defense - next to Thomas. So, who are we getting to REPLACE him? And please, do not saw Woods and Crable. Give me a break.

Re: Vrabel traded to KC

Hope we got #34 for him, or at least #67.

more likely #98

We must have someone in place to replace him...Jonathan Vilma perhaps?

There was a statement that G Brian Waters wants out of K.C. Perhaps that is the deal? He is an all pro and 32 years of age. Thoughts?
