Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Love the idea.

Peppers could play OLB. We could move Vrabel or AD inside (preferrebly Vrabel) since both can play that position. We'd have Peppers and AD at OLB and Mayo and Vrabel at ILB in our base 3-4 defense.

For anyone saying Peppers is too big for OLB, keep in mind that AD is 6-2 270 lbs. Peppers is 6-7, 283 lbs and can move. He's got quick feet and I think can play in pass coverage if he needs to (extremely wide wingspan). He was ahtletic enough to play basketball for North Carolina hoops so I don't question his athleticism.

This sounds almost too perfect for both sides so it probably won't happen. Then again, I never thought Randy Moss would become a Patriot so who knows.

This thread is fascinating. I actually came here to post the same proposition when I saw the Peppers news.

If Peppers is a fit at OLB it becomes VERY interesting/tempting. It would be nice to have Peppers as a third DE to rotate with Warren and the usually-injured Seymour, keeping all three fresh, but it's hard to justify big millions for a platoon player. However, if Peppers was an OLB most of the time, he could still give the DEs a rest from time to time, and suddenly we're kicking butt!

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Peppers is an UFA after the season so no need to trade for him when you can just sign him.

If Peppers wishes to make the transition to a new position and succeed then no team has a better track record of converting such players than do BB's Patriots.

If Peppers wishes to play for one of the few 3-4 team around then the Pats would be in the mix because they are one such team.

If Peppers wishes the above but also wants to be on a team with strong SB aspirations, then I would have ti think that the Pats would be at the top of his wish list.

But would the Pats have interest? And at what $ amount if so?

Absolutely. On passing downs and when we are in our pass sub packages, Peppers can move down to DE, AD on the other end, and suddenly we have two players on the edges that can really go after the QB.

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

How old is Peppers?

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Besides the Pats, what other teams play a 3/4

I know the Chargers and Steelers do.

Who else?

Probably the Browns now if they don't already.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

New England needs an ILB starter this year, not an OLB. Vrabel and Thomas are the starters on the outside.

if it were up to me, i would look to upgrade at OLB opposite Adalius. I love Vrabel, but i think his time has past. hes a good player, but i think of him more as a reserve player than a starter at this point. i think we squeezed a year out of him this year as starter and think next year it would be ideal to replace him.

if he stays i think he needs to take a salary cut. thats my opinion.

Good post, I also think the Pats would be on top of his list.

Steelers- 2 awesome pass rushing olbs in Harrison and Woodley absolutely no need for them.

Cowboys- Ware is going to demand monster money cant see the boys investing that much into one position, but with jj you never know mans desparate for a ring.

jets- If he wants to play for a contender scratch them off the list.

Browns- they play a 34 but arent going to contend for anything within the next 3 years imo.

That leaves the Pats, would Peppers fill a huge need... absolutely. But the question is how much is he going to be looking for and is it a smart signing to give all the money for a player to come in and learn a new position?

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

I believe he is 28

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

hes bigger and faster than a LOT of LBs in the league. and hes dropped back a decent amount of times. bring him in!

The Jesters still employ a 3-4. If or when someone decides to hold their nose and dive in to coach that trainwreck of a franchise, they will ultimately decide whether or not the team keeps a 3-4.

Good point, Ive seen highlights of him dropping back into coverage when they call those zone fire blitzes or whatever they are, Ive also seen him chace people down man can run.

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Before I opened the thread I said to myself, "no way because he is a 4-3 guy". After I opened it and read that Peppers wants to play in a 3-4, I told myself, "let's do this". If BB feels that Peppers can make a smooth transition from DE to LB, than this trade makes perfect sense. The Panthers clearly need to make a change at QB and the Pats desperately need help with their pass rush. Guys, I wouldn't rule out this trade.

Heres a question, if you were the gm of the Pats who do you go after via trade, Nhamdi or Peppers?

Nhamdi... no question about it. No doubt in my mind. He would be a sure thing in our defense. Peppers would not.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Agree with Sarge that on a long term deal they could fit Peppers in at way under the $14M+ that would initially be designated for Cassel. Peppers would seem to be too big to play OLB, listed at 6'7", 283; if he was quick enough in coverage it would be intriguing for sure, that is some crazy wingspan.

I Actually think he can play OLB in the mold of a Merriman, this guy is a freak of nature.

Re: How about Cassel for Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Anyone think we could get a first day pick along with him?
That would sure sweeten the deal.

Now that is a really tough question. I really like both guys and would happy with either of them. But this is where the expertise of both BB and his scounting crew come in. If I were GM, I would go for pass rush because a heavy pass rush can make average guys in the secondary look good. Also, I would take Peppers because there doesn't appear to be any game changing pass rushers that the Pats can select with their pick in the draft. With Merriweather improving each game, this defense is about 2 to 3 players away from being one of the best in the game. Didn't BB really like Peppers coming out of the draft? I thought I heard something like that.
