Zappe waived (Edit: so was Malik!)

I'm guessing cap issues, dead money, guaranteed salary etc.

yup, OTC confirms

cutting Slater would cause a $2.6 mil dead money and add $1.3 mil to the cap, so that was never going to happen, plus his salary is guaranteed, so you would have to pay him and then sign him to a new deal.
I had thought Slater might be a cut/retirement this year. His presence didn't seem to help Special Teams or Team Leadership last year.

Regardless, the O-line play led to poor play by Zappe. SInce he played poorly, he diminished the chance that another team would be interested in him. So the Patriots can protect another player and then ir him and bring back Zappe. Probably why the O-line sucked.

Pure genious!
That Titans game was the first time I've analyzed/scrutinized every offensive play (with a focus on the line), and I swear by the end of the game I was thinking that they were trying to make him look godawful. Obv the fumbles were all on him, but playing with that line... WR8 as your best receiver (except for WR6 for a play or so)... Words can't describe how badly (imho) the TE/WR receivers played... I thought they were worse than the line (well maybe not Stübs). Last year, pretty much all of the offensive starters played the last preseason game, but I guess there was a change in philosophy...

Word was the Bears had no respect for the guy.
Is this true? I heard about a Bears defender saying that he was small and easy to defend but I can’t find that quote anywhere or who said it.

The fact that they kept Wade and Speed means this was not a case of just creating room to IR players. Zappe could be back, but it could very well be relegated practice squad with another QB2 signed. Zappe was cut it wasn’t roster manipulation.

I know we make a lot out of the preseason game performances because that's what we see, but I don't think the coaches rate them any higher than practices. If Bailey looked good in practice but not the preseaon games, he'd still be on the roster. The coaches must not have liked what they saw in practice, either.

Oh my god I didn't know he died! I just looked it up. That's awful! I'm sorry to everyone that though I was being a POS. Editing it now.
I missed it too, you were not alone.

They can't know for sure of this. And if Zappe isn't claimed, what does that say about him anyway. If Zappe is all that good, there will be several teams trying to put in waiver claims for him. My guess is that he won't be claimed in waivers which means the league does not look at him as a solid back up and developmental player.
It's always a calculated risk. Zappe is decent enough, but not enough to make a team move out one of their 53

Definitely. I was just stating that even taking off my tinfoil hat for a split second, that there may have been a long con sabotage going on to try to free up a roster spot to help Zappe clear. Imho, after that close analysis of the Titans game, it's not far fetched. Similar to previous years, they obv would've preferred to keep Hoyer (and this year Zappe), but they're clearly willing to make the gamble, although it was different with Hoyer since he was vested. I think they were just trying to massage the odds a bit.

I can't remember who reported it, but they said that the Bears claimed all they had to do is sit back and bat balls and never were concerned about pass rushing him.

I was surprised when they made this move, but not really shocked (DBruinz made a great case for it). At one point, I had the Pats keeping all three, but that faded when we never saw Cunningham again after the first game. They might have kept Zappe if they hadn't picked up needed OL in hte last days.

For the move itself, I'm perfectly okay with it. Unlike with Hoyer a couple of years ago, they've exposed Zappe to Waivers, but so what? Seriously, if he was a kid with Trey Lance's potential (but not Lance's costs!), then I'd be scratching my head. But he's not. He's short, has a weak arm, can't scramble, gets passes batted down over and over.

Maybe he'll be an okay back-up, but if he's claimed, there are many who could do that sitting there and have better physical traits, better arm. People mention Will Grier, for example.

As for him knowing the system, I don't buy it. It's a different system and he looked absolutely lost in the last game - and not just because of the OL. He was lost. His screen lob is the kind of thing that gets a player at the NFL retired in a hurry. BOB was clearly unhappy with him.

I don't think they lose him to waivers, or Cunningham, for that matter, but if they lose both, shrug. I prefer they protect Wade and yes, Bryant - depending on Jack Jones, they need them. With Bolden IR'd, I'm glad Speed was protected, for now.

My guess is the Pats will not open with 1 QB on their opening day 48, there will be a back up.
Any love for 29 year old Marcus Mariota?? Looks like he is morphing into a career back up.

I'd take Marcus over Zappe.

Apparently the league is not as high on Zappe as many people in New England.

Wow. I said yesterday another team would pick him up as PS/3rd QB. Shows what I know....which is nothing
