If Sudfield makes it ...(he wont make it to practice squad)...what TE's make it .....and who gets the axe?

Right now for me it's Gronk-Fells-Hooman-Sudfield.

If they think Ballards issue isn't serious they might put him on the practice squad. But if it is, then his days in the NFL could be sadly over.

Maybe Gronk, Sudfield, Hoo-man and Fells ( I think Hoo-man and Fells are locks, honestly - they've both looked very solid in camp) with Ballard on PUP?

Here we go again!!!! You can't PUP Ballard OK!!!!! Stop this nonsense!!!!

If they only want 4 and want Suds to be one for now.

PUP Gronk
IR Ballard
Cut Ballard Hoo or Fells
In Season IR Ballard

Likely they IR Ballard and keep suds. Or cut suds and try to get him to the practice squad. Only Gronk can be PUP to save a roster spot.

You just can't put someone on the PS. First he has to be elligible which I dont think he is. Second, he would have to clear waivers, which he probably would not.

I know... the situation takes actual tactful thinking. I wish it was as easy as some of you make it out to be - just pup him or put him on the PS. Football dosent work that way for a reason.

If the team thinks it's worth waiting a few more weeks they might put him on the PS. Of course we all know he won't be eligible if he's injured. But officially, he probably won't be injured. After all, we all know there are ways and means of doing things in the league.

Waiving him and trying to get him onto IR is the logical step. But the Giants could swoop in and claim him back. Now that would be spiteful of course, but all is fair in love and war.

18 months post surgery is a long time to recover and the guy is clearly still not right. I think last year we all thought he'd be ready to fly for us 2013. Sadly, this is now looking very unlikey. So don't be shocked if he's cut.

If Ballard needs more time to recover, they can't PUP him? He seems on the edge of Physically Unable to Perform to me. If they can't because of some technicality, then in-season IR or whatever the designation might be, is possible.

Sorry for not knowing some clause in the CBA or whatever the rule is, but really, try to calm down, okay?

Attention!

Jake Ballard is not eligible for PUP.

Jake Ballard is not eligible for the P.S..

I hope this helps people moving forward.

FYI: the rule is that players who practice even once in the preseason cannot go on PUP. (I understand the logic of the rule, though I don't agree with it.)

If Gronkowski is placed on Reserve/PUP, he cannot play or practice for 6 games. For this reason, I think the Patriots will suck it up and leave him
on the active roster.

Ballard is not up to snuff. I would place him on short term IR and activate him later in the season if he is needed.

Gronkowski, Fells, Hoomanawanui, and Sudfeld on 53 man roster.

I really do not think it is a wise use of in season IR to use it on a fringe backup. It's better to reserve it for a putative starter who may get injured in the 1st half of the season and needs say until week 15-16 to recover. Formerly teams would just IR the starter but here you can get a starter meeting those criteria back ready for the playoffs. With this franchise it's all about playoff performance.

If Ballard isn't ready, just IR him or cut bait depending on the medical prognosis.

I too would rather see BB save the IR designation for a top level player. Neither Ballard nor Armstead qualifies. It is unfortunate, but I think we won't see either of those guys those year.

Thank you.

Armond Armstead is eligible for the PUP list.

No. He cant go to the PS. No you dont have waive him to get him on IR. You just IR him. His season is done and you control his rights.

I would be shocked if he is cut. Why cut him unless you think he will never play in the NFL again. He is a 25 year old Starting Superbowl winning TE. Plus you just paid him ofr a year. Cutting him makes no sense

This has nothing to do with a CBA clause. This is football 101. If you dont know it, maybe learn it instead of throwing out your ideas and when called out trying to pass it off as some new secrets nobody knows about.

They intentionally have these PUP policies in place so that teams cant just stash players off the 53 for use later in the year. I find it hard to believe that there are many people here who are big enough fans to post on this forum and know conceptually what PUP "is" but dont understand how it works.

Why would we cut a SB winning good pass catching tightend who can block and has experience in big games? Who could be of good use while we are waiting on Rob Gronkowski to come back, both in the run and passing game? Someone please explain.

JB is not getting cut. And sure, he is a great stopgap until Gronk is back but the point is that Ballard is hurting. How much? Nobody is sure but it dosent seem great if he is hobbling around out there.

So, there is a dilema. What do you do with him?
