Re: What the F***..Samari Rolle

Thanks Webster... I was worried your response would be mature. Big sigh of relief.

I wasn't the one that got so uptight by misreading (understanding) a post

So I thought I'd help a steeler fan with the term

Uptight??? That's funny right there. With your first post I just assumed you were another one of the many fans that has no idea what he's talking about. My mistake. I like how you insulted me though... nice touch.

Re: What the F***..Samari Rolle

So everyone believes that a 50 something ref calling a 20 something FB player "boy" is derogatory? Technically isn't a 20 something year old guy a boy in relation to a 50 something guy? This is just rediculous. He called a FB player boy. OMG!!! How dare he call a 20 something person a boy! Off with his head!

Re: What the F***...Samari Rolle

I think the Ravens are a bunch of whiny crybabies but I can understand why Rolle would be incensed by this.

Rolle, at least from the quotes I've seen never mentioned it as a "racial slur," the media did. He merely said that a man calling another grown man "boy" is clearly degrading and strange coming from a referee, which I totally agree with. This guy isn't 60 years old, why is he calling players "boy?"

My guess is that the Ravens were *****ing and moaning all game long and talking sh!t and the refs, namely this guys, was getting angry with it so he tried to get under Rolle's and the Ravens skin by provoking them. The Ravens reacting in an undisciplined and sorry manner all game long, but a ref shouldn't stoop to this level where they are talking sh!t to the players and making the situation worse. Both sides were totally wrong if this is true, and totally unprofessional.

yeah but this isn't 1965, 50 year-olds nowadays don't call 20-something year-olds "boy" unless they are trying to demean them.

Re: What the F***...Samari Rolle

I;ve never heard the word "boy" piss someone off racially...?? i live with 3 black kids at college and even asked them how they felt about this...we all agreed that even if the ref was white, "boy" is derogatory because it hints at him being young and immature and not at all racially......since when did the word boy become racially charged....
Honestly i still dont see how thats could be interpreted as racist at all...even by a white guy...call me an idiot but if people are turning a word as simple as "boy" into a racist thing then god help us...

what on earth is that sentence doing in this article? how is them being black have to do with anything...dont get me wrong this isnt me just ranting over racism (im an irish-catholic bred bostonian in every sense of the word)

Furthermore...why is it always the refs? people are Freakin ******s these days..IMO the call could have gone either way, but the pats have had a number of bad calls against them in big games...The Gaffney catch was reviewed and confirmed wat more do they want?

Boy? That's nothing compaired to what I was calling him. Maybe if he would stop mouthing off, no one would think he was still 10 years old.

He fails to mention that he had called the ref a !@^&% before the boy comment. He was kneeling on the ground, praying, when he was called "boy".

Don't call me a boy on the field during a game because I said, 'You've never played football before.' "

No. 110 is head linesman Phil McKinnely, a former player for three NFL teams during the 1970s and '80s. McKinnely, who played collegiately at UCLA, is black, as is Rolle.

I guess Rolle can insert foot into mouth as McKinnely has played football before. Since McKinnely is not a white guy, how is this racist?

I just don't get it. This little punk, Samari Rolle, was barking at a 6'6" Ref who was a NFL player in the 70s and 80s, and everyone is upset that he called Samari "Boy". He is a damned boy. Hes 20 something years old playing a game for a living. The Ref played in the NFL 30 years ago and is now grown up, Samari hasn't, in the eyes of most elders, hes a damned kid. Give me a break.

It totally is a racist term, allbeit an ancient one. "boy" is what white cops called blacks of all ages in the 50s and 60s. Your roomates probably haven't encountered it because it hasn't been in use by racists in recent years but the history of it as a demeaning racial slur is undeniable.

But it doesn't matter, the media is doing what it always does: create a straw man argument, refute it and then project that onto the player or person in question. Rolle never claimed this was "racist," the media did, then they refuted the "racial" angle they had manufactured. Much the same way as a Dan Shaughnessy would say, when Randy Moss was acquired that "The Pats have lost the moral superiority we've always heard about." Problem is that the Pats never claimed such superiority, Shaughnessy did, then he refuted his own creation.

Re: What the F***...Samari Rolle

exactly my point...i dont think the whole black thing was necessary at all...thats all im tryin to say...but yeah, i would be calling him much worse things then boy myself

Rolle never claimed it was racist, the media did. And Rolle was definately immature and unprofessional the entire game, as were the Ravens team. But a ref isn't supposed to respond by talking sh!t back, that's totally unprofessional too.

Re: What the F***...Samari Rolle

It's pretty obvious why he's so pissed off, though he reacted very poorly. Can anybody here honestly tell me if they were playing in that game last night and the ref called them a "boy" with obvious deragatory intent that wouldn't piss you off? He has the right to be upset with the official, but this has been blown way out of proportion.

I'm only 25 and in the eyes of a 70 year old I'm still a boy, that doesn't mean I'm not a man, and it ceratainly doesn't give him or anybody the right to talk down to me just because I'm a younger man than they are. Last I checked... a man is a man... young or old.

All that being said, maybe Rolle told him to go *$%# his mother... I don't know, I wasn't there. None of us know, so this debate is all speculation... very little fact.

As other posters have pointed out, a white calling a black man "boy" was a highly offensive proposition for many years. That your black roomates would not know this is a little strange. Maybe times have changed for the better, but it wasn't all that long ago.

Regardless, this was a fifty-something black dude, so I see this as the Ravens crying about everything but their suckitude at the end.

Re: What the F***..Samari Rolle

Rolle was probably mouthing off to the official being a little jackass. I doubt the ref would clal him a boy unless Rolle started shooting his mouth and being completely immature.

Samari Rolle is 30 something years old, he is not a "damned boy." This is not some elderly man addressing an eight year old kid. Personally I think it's unprofessional for a ref to say that to a player, and the officials should know better than to be baited into spats with players. All in all, it's not a big deal, but I'm sure the league will tell the official to be more professional.

exactly my point...i dont think the whole black thing was necessary at all...thats all im tryin to say...but yeah, i would be calling him much worse things then boy myself

Sure it was necessary that the article mention it. It is a big, big difference if it's a while official calling a black player "boy" or a black official calling a black player "boy." This is not that difficult a concept to grasp.

That defensive holding wasn't close at all, don't feed the trolls. Heck, even some of the idiots on ESPN said it was clear, and that Watson was being held almost the whole way. See, I think some people look at the end of the play when the hold is starting to come off and they think it was close, but if you watch the full play Watson was getting held for a while.

The Ravens and Samari have no place b*tching about the refs in that game, and his saying that official had never played football was childish, and shows just how intelligent he truly is. Bart Scott going after the official the way he did (acted like he wanted to fight him) really got to me as well. Really, that clown should be getting a suspension handed down to him, as there is no place for that kind of behavior in the NFL.

The Rolle was acting like a CHILD, a male child is sometimes referred to as a boy. A ref or a coach 20 years senior of player calling a player a boy is okay in my book. Or would you have half the Carolina Panthers suspended for calling Vinny Testaverde "pop" or "grandpa."
