Wow - BB to the Team After GB Game: "We Weren't Ready to Go"

Thanks, and great points to all the folks bringing up the Belichick ill angle - - I hadn't thought of that and can see in retrospect that that very well may have been a big factor.

He looked very weak in the postgame presser - - in fact, at the time I was wondering if he was going to pass out - - but for some reason, it didn't dawn on me later that he may have been ill in the days leading up to the game and that that may have affected matters.

Folks, after many attempted threads on this board to pin each week as such, I think we may have finally witnessed the "Trap Game" we've all been looking for since Cleveland. The very first play of the game was an exclamation point on the subject.

It's to these young guys' credit that they still found a way to win.

They weren't ready to go. The Packers came out with a really aggressive strategy and the Pats came out rather flat. I think it was partly the players looking past this game because of Flynn and part the gameplan was to battle a more conservative gameplan by the Packers.

I think BB, the Master or situational football, was probably upset with himself about the onside kick. This team prides itself with being ready for anything, they obviously weren't ready for that and I think BB takes responsibility.

From the Patriots' perspective, you can't really have had the onside kick go any better. The game was not, with respect to the standings all that important, and, in the end, the play did not affect the outcome.

I suppose the best possible result would have been for the Patriots to have been very surprised but to have had the ball go out of bounds. But this is second best. Now they'll be ready for it. It's possible that at some point in the future they won't properly execute a onside kick recovery, but I doubt we'll see them blow one from not being prepared. Better it happened now then later in the year where it might be more expensive.

He should have been upset with himself and his coaching staff about the onside kick and for not anticipating GB's excellent defensive game plan based on our depleted D line. I agree that sickness may have prevented his normal extraordinary work hours. This self criticism helps make him a great coach and a leader worth following. Public coaching self criticism give him and his coaches extra locker room practice field cred when he points out player errors and demands more preparation from that player.

Look the GB Packers sent a message with their first play -- "we are here to win". We will do everything -- including trick plays, four downs, whatever it takes. except McCarthy feeling good midway did not go for that fouth down TD at the goalline. Had he done that, it might have altered the complexion of the game.

Now, here come the Bills. For them this is their superbowl. They will play like its 4 down throughout the game. The Pats better bring their A game....

I thought Belichick credited players with making plays in his post-game press conf. He brought up himself and coaching specifically. To me, that sounds like GB included wrinkles in their offense/defense that the NE coaching staff wasn't prepared for, and didn't prepare the team for.

yeah um like u mean the onsides kick? at least with the OK, the team won't get caught flat footed again. if that happened in the playoffs or super bowl, then it could be devastating.

The guys on PFW in Progress confirmed on today's show that BB has been fighting some sort of sickness for the better part of a week and a half. So maybe that theory holds some water.

I thought he should have brought more pressure on a rookie qb; rushing 5 maybe 6 and give Flynn 2 seconds to throw. We could have an easy game.

BB knows McCarthy well enough he should have anticipated things like the onside kick and the commitment to running the ball. And he should have maintained the pressure on the raw QB once he saw it was having an impact. He didn't really put his team in a position to win. They didn't really play that well. But in the end they hung in and found a way to...
