I assume that had something to do with him being the local guy with the nfl hall of fame vote.

It's really the only reason why he still hangs on because he has a hall of fame vote. Which if the ******* is still around when Brady and Belichick are up he won't vote for them.

I hope the Patriots HOF keep it selective. I don't want them too let too many people in otherwise it loses all meaning. Antwine and McGinest work though. Both deserve it.

Yea I was watching and he spouts about nothing really useful.

I agree. You don't want it to turn into the NBA Playoffs where everyone gets in. There are maybe a handful of people left that you can argue need to be in.

Glad he got to retire a Patriot. That "how much" line was so funny.

Welker, Harrison, Sey and Matt Light would be my nominations

We all remember the stop in Indy and the sack the next year, as well as the sackfest in 2005, but my quintessential WillieMac moment was in the 2003 divisional round in 2003.

Willie was on the left edge (over RT) in a 2pt stance looking like he was rearing to get up the field. At the snap, something tipped him off and instead of rushing he broke outside to cover Frank Wycheck. It ended up being a critical play because the play was a double pass and the receiver was wide open. Willie singlehandedly turned a preview of Edelman-to-Amendola into as a 12 yard (I think) sack; no one else on the field could have done anything about it.

If you recall, someone on the Titans *****ed and moaned about the loss saying that they were the better team. When I read his comments the next day, it was Willie's play that ran through my head. Those Titans teams were very good and they probably could have won a SB or two if they figured out that championship teams are more than just the sum total of their stat sheets and 40 times. Willie may have been the ideal embodiment of this truth.

I watched the entire thing. It just ended, and well worth the hour or so I spent. They did a nice job with Houston Antwine, I'm old enough to remember him, and he really was a force of nature on the field. I forgot he'd played 11 years for the Pats.

John Morris did the presentation and was great. He recounted how he thought his NFL wouldn't last his first year, because each day in practice he had to block Houston and couldn't. It wasn't until they got to the regular season that he learned that the guys he played in games weren't as good and he could block them. (BTW- Morris still has the 3rd most pro bowls (8) of any former Pats, so he knew how to block....but he couldn't block "Twine". He also derided the NFL HOF because he felt Houston was the best DT of his time and one of 4 or 5 best ever.

Kraft was very eloquent - so was Jonathan. Robert surprised willing by signing him to a one day contract so he could end his career as a Patriot. Willie went on for a LOOOOOOONG time. But I appreciated how he took the time to thank a LOT of the "little people" who helped him along the way, from youth football coaches to trainers and front office people. He talked a lot about this not being about him, but about team, and by the end of his speech you could tell he believed it.

At the end they had a panel with Zolack moderating Seymour, Slade, and Phifer - If you get to see a clip of it, you'll enjoy it. BB showed up before he had to go to practice with what seemed to be an unplanned appearance. You'll enjoy that one too if you get to see the clip on Pats. com. A lot of his old teammates showed up for him. I was surprised Seymour was there. His end here was so traumatic, yet he seemed to enjoy himself being back. Bruschi wasn't there and that surprised me a bit, though Willie mentioned him as being one of those he point out.

Thanks to shemssey for posting the link. I probably would have missed it

Ah hemmm *clears throat*, Morris Coates and Hunt are in.

Same message could be said to the fans Willie McGinnist. Cherish the moment. Thank you for all the great memories. I truly thought he was the coolest cat in the clubhouse and one of the most motivational leaders in that ever put on a Pats uniform I've seen.

To this day I think there is no way he let this defense falter in 06 and 07. He would of willed them to step up when they needed to the most. I didn't think it back then, but after he left it really did seem like a flame in the defense wasn't there. One of BBs few mistakes, but that the business and Im sure he understood that part.

What game was it that McGinnist got poked in the eye on Monday night back in 96? Buffalo maybe? Returned the interception for a TD with eye swollen shut. I remember my friend and eye jumping up and down saying "go one eyed Willie!"

One of my fondest memories as a fan was visiting my sister in San Fransisco and she had tickets to a preseason game. My brother and I hung out McGinnist and Slade jerseys on the railing and during warm ups they approached us and signed them. High fives and all. I really got to thinking defensive jerseys weren't so popular in those days and I think they appreciated the support and it was cool. Totally ignored the fans that rushed up with their Coates, Glenn and Bledsoe jerseys. loved it.

Anyway, I was super happy for him to get in and noticed there wasn't a McGinnist appreciation thread so I thought I would post here.

Congrats to Willie!

I was 11 when we drafted Willie. 4 SBs later and I was in my twenties when he left. Few players in all of sport will I ever have a connection quite like Willie. Willie and Drew were probably my first two real favorite players. I was a little obsessed with Bird and Tippett as a real young kid but that was more my fathers doing. I was old enough to choose Willie and Drew on my own and those two will always be two of my all time favorites.
