I love VW Cousins, But there seems to be a push back on a restructure.

At $11.5 mm we could get Lamarr Houson, B.J. Raji (who had an off year in 2013) and Brandon Browner on a one year prove it.

Raji is not Wilfork but he can make a play of two. Six years younger.

Lamarr Houson is flexible and has pass rush skills.

Even if we keep Talib, isn't Browner insurance or how about SS? (he is on vacation the first four games but reinstated).

Does this take the sting out of letting Vince go?

It would be close dollar wise.

Thoughts?

I like it. I wonder what is cheaper though, sign Raji or re structure Wilfork? I know Vince is getting old and is coming off injury but our D will be weird without him

Raji just rejected 1/4M from the Packers (this in spite of the fact that he's a mediocre player, at best). And you think we could get all three for the price of Wilfork?

Yeah.......

I am a big fan of Barndon Browner, though.

Wilfork's cap hit is irrelevant. You're still paying him $3.6M of that whether you keep him or not. I don't know if you could even get Houston for the money saved by cutting Wilfork.

And Raji sucks.

For the $7.5-8M 2014 cap space actually saved you could probably sign Lamarr Houston + Brandon Browner. That works for me. I don't particularly want Raji, anyway.

How about the 25 year old Terrance Cody who is under Hagata and at Alabama could dominate a game?
Cheaper than Raji!

1.) Wilfork's salary is $7.5m, not $11.6m. That's the amount in question, in terms of the cap, not the $11.6m. The $4.1m difference is going to hit the cap whether Wilfork is brought back or not.

2.) I find it very difficult to believe that Houston, Raji and Browner will sign deals that total less than $7.5m against the cap in 2014.

No thanks.

Linval Joseph would work, but that would cost way too much in addition to Houston.

I don't think BB wants that many new pieces, anyway. Just add Zach Kerr or Justin Ellis in the draft to pair with Sealver Siliga, and stop shopping for names.

Lamarr Houston is going to get over $9 million per year.

He has $500K in weight bonuses and workout bonuses that will not hit the cap if he is cut. Wilfork's dead money, right now, is only $3.6M if cut.

I don't think that $500k is going to be the difference.

No one knows if Vince is even going to be able to play this year. I think it will be more likely that he's be coaching. I think the way the Pats have to go forward is to release Vince after 6/1 and if he's ready to go resign him in the $2-4MM/yr area for a year or two and eat the $3.6MM in dead money.

As to Toys OP. I like the Houston and Browner aspects of the deal, but I don't think they will pay Houston the kind of money he's going to be offered to be in a 3 man rotation at DE/LB with Jones and Ninko. That the kind of job that JAllen would be perfect for at his age.

I want Browner or Cook, regardless of whether we sign Talib and BOTH if we don't. Siliga proved that you can find decent run stuffers almost anywhere. What you have to pay for are guys who can move the pocket from the inside. The 2 guys most likely to be able to do that in this year's draft are Aaron Donald, and RHageman. Donald is out of our reach, and Hageman will only be there if his red flags are really worrisome. THAT's how much teams are looking for that "inside push". Hageman's physical upside is rare enough to be worth the clear risk he imposes. He may even be worth a trade up IF he lasts into the low 20's

I think that Houston would be more than just a rotational DE. He'd get his share of starting time, both at LDE and inside. I think he'll be an foundational DL player, comparable to Chandler Jones.

I like both.

I'd personally add Dominique Easley into the mix, probably ahead of Hageman. And I haven't given up on Donald, for whom I would trade up.

Raji turned down an $8M APY offer from the Packers during the season. He is trying to break the bank and he has regressed as much as any player in the NFL since 2010 so I would have no interest.

I am not sure why the Wilfork cap # is even relevant, he will not be on this team if he does not restructure and take a significant pay cut.

Browner is singable no matter what, he will on get a one year contract given the risk he carries and it will not be worth much.

Possibly, but I'm not so sure about that. The Vikings clearly overpaid for Everson Griffen because they knew Jason Allen was leaving and couldn't afford to let Griffen go, but current rumors with Michael Bennett suggest a market for like $8M for Houston:

There are reports that the Bears have offered $8.5 million per year, and that the Seahawks are willing to pay $8 million per year.

Bennett?s playing time will be a factor in his negotiations | ProFootballTalk

I'm not sure Houston will end up getting more than Michael Bennett. But we'll probably know in another day or two. I think he's a log shot for the Pats, but not out of the question.

I think Houston will get paid more than Bennett. Could go either way though. Houston can play RDE, DT and is probably a top 5 LDE.

We'll see. I think Houston is a better player than Bennett, but he's been lost in obscurity in Oakland, whereas Bennett was the best DL player on a SB team. Bennett also has more sacks, which tends to attract attention.
