It's not a one-year rental for 8 million. Volin's article said that Revis's contract allows the money to become guaranteed, which means you could take a huge portion of it and amortize it out over a couple of years. It'd be 8 million the first year, 18 million (instead of 16 million) the second, third, fourth and fifth...

Even if you cut him after one, you'll still owe the 8 million guaranteed money in year two.

Volin is making Revis' contract sound so much less awful than it is. Outside of Revis taking a straight pay cut (good luck with that), he's making $16M for each season he plays. There are a ton of ways to spread that $16M out over multiple seasons, but it's still $16M in total cap room per season. If it's $8M in 2014, then there's another $8M to hit the cap in the future. If you lower his 2015 cap hit, then that money is hitting the cap sometime in the future. There have been plenty of attempt to sugarcoat it, but $16M is $16M, despite the minor benefit of pushing it into future years.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks that Revis would want to play for $8M a year.

In any case, I think that there is a better chance that he plays here than a lot of other of the free agent possibilities that folks mention. Revis is well worth $10M a year of cap hit.

We might argue how much Belichick might be willing to pay a center, or a safety or a 3rd DE. However, I think it is clear that a top corner is worth lots more than a player at any other position other than quarterback.

Heh. You should go back and review some of my posts when I first joined here and was in my early 20's. I was 10 times worse.
