Why You Really Hate Tom Brady

“Tom Brady is a better person than he is a football player,” McGinest said. “He cares about football, and that’s important. But he cares about his teammates even more than the game. And once you know somebody like that, you can only love them.

“There’s nothing to hate."

I've never understood the hatred. Jealousy doesn't fully explain it. There is more. By all accounts he is a good teammate who is "one of the guys" while others elsewhere are divas. He gives credit, plays hard, and succeeds despite draft status. He should be cheered.

From the Entourage producer/writer:

Life imitated art.

“Tom could not have been a nicer guy,” Ellin says. “It’s hard for me because I love the Giants and hate the Patriots, but now I root for Brady over Eli. And that sucks. It really sucks.”

don't forget the beginning part of that story:
On February 3, 2008, Eli Manning led the Giants to a stunning 17-14 victory over New England in Super Bowl XLII.

Within a month or so, Doug Ellin, the creator, producer and writer of the hit HBO series Entourage, received a call from New York’s quarterback asking if he could appear in a future episode. As a diehard Giants fan dating back to his boyhood in the Long Island town of Merrick, Ellin was beyond giddy. Soon, however, euphoria turned into panic. Ellin wrote a script that featured both Eli and Peyton Manning (at the brothers’ request) then never heard from them again.
pretty inconsiderate--ask to be written into an episode, and then never respond after someone puts a lot of effort into it.

Great read. Thanks for sharing.

I believe it's a combination of jealousy and nationwide hatred for New England. People can claim it's cheating or whatever, except for that a) they hated Brady long before Spygate, and b) they've forgiven other athletes for far greater offenses. By which I mean offenses that actually occurred and have not been scientifically disproven. But people really hate New England, to the point that they invent reasons to hate people from there. Look at the mental gymnastics people jump through to justify dislike for David Ortiz, the 2016 Celtics, Affleck Damon and Wahlberg, etc. etc. It's a regional thing. People don't like us because they perceive us as being arrogant and thinking we're better than everyone else. And when Raiders/Chargers/Colts/Eagles/Rams/Bills/Dolphins fans realize that we don't even consider their teams as rivals, it kinda plays into that preconception.

That's probably the third element in its own right. A lot of fanbases, probably north of a dozen, consider the Pats to be their team's greatest rival or something close to it. And in most cases, we probably don't even realize that there's supposed to be a rivalry there. Because their team's most important game in the past decade was some random divisional round stomping that they suffered through, while for us the Pats wrecking some team to get to the AFCCG is an annual occurrence. I bet the Chiefs fanbase is still pissed at how we knocked them out in the divisional round this past year, and meanwhile I have trouble remembering offhand exactly who it was we took out. Jets fans, Dolphins fans, Bills fans, Steelers fans, Colts fans, Ravens fans, Broncos fans, Raiders fans, Texans fans, Chargers fans, Eagles fans, Rams fans, Seahawks fans, Panthers fans, and probably a couple more all consider the Patriots in general and Brady in particular to be one of their most hated teams purely on account of what happens on the field. I know a bunch of Chargers and Raiders fans out in Socal, for example, and they all hate the Patriots at least as much as they hate their actual division rivals. I've witnessed people from both groups rooting for the Broncos--the team that owns their division--over the Patriots. It's irrational to the point of being kinda pathetic in how obsessive it is.

That's awfully consistent with pretty much everything you hear about Peyton off the field. Loves and seeks the spotlight, but has a tendency to be a **** when it's not shining on him.

People hate Tom Brady because he makes their Sundays miserable but they don't want to admit hating somebody just because he is the best at what he does. Therefore they must imagine character flaws such as "he is a jerk", "he is a cheater", etc. to justify their hatred.

Rick Rude. LMAO.

So true. Made up crap.

*I am not a psychologist. I don't play one on TV.*

I think these hated rivals are kicking themselves mentally for NOT drafting him. Call it a reverse-jealousy, or whatever you think fits...but it's the only thing that truly makes sense.

In today's world, a vast number of people who are pushing for mediocrity.......and to them, Brady is a pariah because consistent success is seen as greed

One they missed out is those guys who are secretly attracted to Tom Brady but don't want to admit it to themselves.

"But Brady's gay!"

"Uh, I think you'll find that there's a lot of evidence in the other direction ..."

"He's making eyes at me."

"Listen, don't worry. It's fine, really ..."

I've always felt that people hate Tom Brady because he doesnt aestetically represent the "meat and potatoes" sensibilities of middle America. He doesnt doesnt appear as an "everyman" to most of america. Fans and Media personnel feel that guys like roethlisburger, Favre, and Manning are guys that you can have a beer with and talk about pickup trucks and lawnmowers. They are seen as tough, rugged, blue collar guys and brady is seen as a metrosexual wuss. The funny part is favre, roethlisberger and, manning parade their injuries all season to boost their legend and build an excuse. While Brady plays through the season quietly only to find out the serious injuries hes played though at seasons end. Tom is seen like the rich boy who won the lottery. Its hard for people to support or feel sympathy for a guy they percieve to be like that.

Secretariat is a really good movie to see; besides being a true story you see a person-in this case, a young housewife-persecuted and walked on by her own family and rivals alike, and after persevering and succeeding is ridiculed as...smug, arrogant, etc. In a world filled with professional athletes who are pond scum, people like Brady should be national heroes, but aren't. Bradshaw? Staubach? Montana? Please. Great QB's but more impressive than Brady? Jeanie Buss is her father's daughter, a Laker fan and married to Phil Jackson. This is a person who will never accept the fact that her husband merely illustrates the immeasurable chasm between Red and anybody else who ever coached in the NBA.

Then, the association thing. The media hates Belichick because the media sucks. I've been thinking, has there ever been a real scandal involving the Patriots? Ever? OK, Aaron Hernandez. What, the financial mess that was the Sullivans?

The $126 Million Fumble

But is that a scandal? Not really. Just a mess. And, at the same time, with the team on the field competing for the championship.

Tom's not perfect, but he's always been a good person. In this country, stupidity and ignorance prevail, and the media joins in to try and help tear people like that down.

Objectively, the worst thing I can think of is the Moynahan thing. Even though all's fair in love and war, from what I understand he didn't cheat...just 'bad timing' with the 3 month pregnancy announced 2 months after the breakup. That's about as TMZ as I get.

Even the worst thing in his emails was the completely accurate prediction that Peyton was done in two years. And he even felt the need to apologize for it... a completely foreign concept to "Teabag" Manning.

Speaking of which, I live in Denver, and I've had conversations that go like this (BEFORE the latest news stories about Peyton/Tennessee in February):

Donkey fan: "Tom Brady's a piece of **** and a cheater!"
Me: "Elaborate please."
DF: "...... cellphone or something...."
Me: "Then why do you not only root for a man who committed sexual assault, but praise him as being a philanthropist and a hero?"
DF: "You're making that up. It would be a big deal if it actually happened."

February 2016....
Me: "See. Kinda a big deal."
DF: "The two other people in the room disagree with him on what happened, but I believe him." / "It was college, so what?" / "You're being childish using that issue to root against Peyton."

Can't people have a little objectivity when it comes to this stuff? I have rooted for ****ty people who happen to play for my team (hernandez), but that doesn't make them good people, and I will acknowledge that.

That said, of all the players on all my favorite teams, TFB is one of the best guys off the field.

Can't people have a little objectivity when it comes to this stuff?

No, not really. Prejudice + general perspectives + emotional hangups + rhetorical, rather than dialectical, thinker = slow to change and rarely able to switch from subjective to objective.

I would love to sit down with Tom, have a beer and discuss pickups & tractors. And, as I think all of us here know, its the Patriots who won the lottery, which is Tom. Unfortunately, Kraft missed the chance to retire the ugly and insulting F.E. in 2002, depriving New England from seeing our best years looking like us. Hmmm, red. Think Russians, Redcoats, Romans.

So, this guy needs to change the color of his cape? What was Betsy Ross thinking?
