He seems to be taking the Cafardo approach to the Pats: What's most interesting about them is someone made uncomfortable by the organization's roster decisions. Cafardo had a long history of this with Milloy et.al., but Tomase has been very persistent in presenting "players on the outs" columns, interspersed with real news. For example, before the draft, one of his lead stories involved calling the agents for Beisel and Samuel and asking them if they felt uncomfortable, which was met with an understandably defensive reaction. Then his interest lay with the "aggrieved" Daniel Graham, pushed by additional TEnds and without a contract extension, "waiting for a phone ring". Today Patrick Pass stuck in a numbers crunch. One of these columns in isolation is an accident, but three in so short a period is a trend of negative reporting. I have heard Tomase on the radio and it is clear to me he does not like covering the Pats and preferred the Red Sox beat for the Eagle Tribune. There are hundreds of potential columns that could draw interest but I believe his choice of topics reflects a certain negative perspective on the organization, call me paranoid.

Personally I've always preferred Teller to Penn, but as far as his writing, a little controversy is a good thing for most writers... being just another guy who drinks the Kool-Aid and doesn't question anything doesn't get you noticed... and as a young writer, he needs to be noticed

You do have a good point Joe, but I never saw Mike Reiss have any problems getting noticed, and I can't recall to many negative controversial articles from him.

If Reiss had stayed with the Herald he would be their Patriots beat guy right now. Instead, he's stuck in blog neverland at the Globe behind Solomon. What a waste.

Whatever the Globe sports department's hiring policy, this time they hit a home run. I think Solomon is a strong read and getting better, and I look forward to reading him. He comes from Texas, I believe, so he actually knows and cares about football and we can only hope he pushes Cafardo and Borges out eventually.

I actually thought Tomase did a nice job in the article of showing Pass as a survivor. For those of us on this board who want to write off Pass after the additions of Maroney and Mills, this article was a reminder that he stepped up admirably in '05 until he went down with an injury. Interesting to see that Pass had the turf toe problem since high school. Maybe he comes back stronger after the surgery?

Reiss actually does write some articles making good points and posing rhetorical questions that aren't always easy

You don't have to be a jerk like Borges, but you do need to let readers know that you are not a yes man to the team administration

That being said, if you ARE a jerk about it like Borges, you probably won't be granted a high degree of access by the team and coaches

I dont like this tommase guy, for the same reason I dont like cafardo, they rather be covering the red sox... I agree a guy like Reiss would have been great for the Herald, or a guy like Paul Perillo, from Pats football weekley would be a ideal beat writer for the Herald....

Very odd. This is some kind of offense to you, but another writer (sitting safely in the pressbox) begging pitchers to "drop" a batter is OK in your book.

are you still hysterical, or has the pill kicked in yet?

Re: Tomase. Take a chill pill. I hear that's very popular with you. (While you ignore facts).

I am resurrecting this old thread just want to point out that Thomase simply can't help himself when it comes to the Pats. After a brief hiatus from the negativity, during which he tried to ingratiate himself to Pats fans, he now has siezed on the first hint of bad news to gleefully manufacture a disaster. Thomase could be a good reporter, but he has a lazy vindictive nature when it comes to players or coaches who don't make his job easy (see Manny and BB, hopefully the only time the two will ever be compared). It is no coincidence he has climbed onto the Borges bandwagon, which no doubt is catered with plenty of XLarge cheese pizzas so he can stuff his face while pretending the Patriot ship is sinking. Eat another pie, you A-hole.

I seperate the writers from the beat guys. The writers like to stir the pot to keep their job while the beat writers give us the news we need to hear.

At my age, I've learned to ignore it and filter out the crap just to get some real news and possibly some good opinion.

Tomase is a good reporter, getting a lot of scoops, who is working hard to be as objective as possible. Sometimes I disagree with him, but I honestly don't think he's got an agenda, a la Borges, Cafardo, Felger. I think he's just taking a harder look at things than we do. Sometimes he's right to do that, sometimes he oversteps, but it is his JOB and so far I think he's doing it pretty well. He's Reiss with a bit more of an edge than we'd always like, but he digs for stuff and works hard, and I appreciate that.
