The truth is that in today’s NFL a running games value is:
-Being used to set up the passing game
-Eating the clock when you have a lead
-Embarrassing teams that can’t stop it.


There is a huge correlation between rushing attempts and yards and winning.
But the causation is reversed. You run a lot because you are winning, rather than you won because you run a lot. More often than not.

I think one of the things affecting this is MacDaniels desire to get his QB going and into the game early. And as much as I want them pounding the other team I understand why he wants to get his QB's into a rhythm as soon as possible, especially when your QB's are as good as Brady and Maye.

Rahms fumbling problem has not gone away and the rookie wall is a real concern for Hendo.

I really wish that the Pats could have brought in another proven RB to replace Gibson. Jennings is OK.

A team that can run even when opponents know they want to is a tough team.

We have played several teams that were ranked low on their ability to stop the run and yet we didnt find huge success trying to run on them. Cook is by far a better back than anyone we have but it just aint him. Its how their line run blocks and how they scheme their run game that makes them one of the top rushing team.

My point is we would surely like to establish a strong run game but we simply have not been able to do so and at this point in the season I would not put all my eggs in that basket week in and week out.

This is what I heard and read all of last season which clearly did not happen and early in this season I also read that there was a focus on establishing a run to help a young QB who was having to learn a new offense.

I think it was supposed to be the case last year, but we sucked at everything we tried to do last year. I think we heard in camp this year that maybe the Oline was better at run blocking than pass blocking.

I know it was certainly more focus last year and it failed. As for the line being better at run blocking than pass blocking, yeah I recall those comments but right now it looks like they do better at pass blocking which is surprising.

Good points. The running game has shown signs of life lately. The combination of Henderson and Jennings can help with stretch runs to the outside. Henderson elite speed no matter how good a front is.. it stresses a defense to have to move sideline to sideline.. aggressive defenses want to go downhill. Rham can take his time to get healthy mixing in D. Jones at RB would help as well.

It has been nice to see Henderson stepping up. I would like to see Josh incorporate more calls that utilize his speed and pass catching ability, they need to get him in space. You can have Jennings handle the Rham runs up the middle.

... and I'd add that Maye has been so freaking good. I'm happy the coaching staff hasn't stuck to some philosophy and has adapted to what is taking place ... at least so far, we have a QB in the MVP conversation. Let him cook, as they say.

Couple of things.
First off regarding being a run first team. Those words were used by the coaching staff, they talked about leaning on the run. I can’t remember who said it, but I do remember hearing/reading it a few times.
When this was said, I’m sure it was due to uncertainty with how the line would pass block, and Mayes development.
As it turns out, Maye ascended quicker than anyone could’ve imagined, and the line actually pass blocks pretty well.
With that in mind, our offensive mentality has changed, as it should. Good coaches play to the strength of the team, and that’s what we’re doing.
We don’t need a dominant run game, however we do need to be able to run in short yardage situations, and we need to run to close games out.
We haven’t been great at that, so I would definitely like to see improvement in those areas.

Agreed. He has been put in a position to utilize his speed and agility. He's running with confidence and it's good to see. As the weather turns he will pivotal. Jennings also has been solid. We also have D. Jones to factor in too

Last year was just a disaster, I don’t think anything they wanted to do, did or didn’t do matters. They were clueless.

I think the talk of being a run first team didn’t come from the organization it was created for them by observers and media who assumed a HC with a defensive back ground who used to have Derrick Henry would want to be a ground and pound team.
Nothing could be further from the truth IMO. By far the greatest asset this team has is its QB. Now the best way to win with a top QB certainly isn’t to abandon the run and make his job harder, so the running game is imoortant but in the big picture we run to enhance the passing game. We run to make throwing easier, but we win by passing.

So we will never be run first with Drake Maye at qb we will be run as much as necessary to keep the defense honest so the passing game can be the best it can.
