Why Do Some People Around Here Dislike Talking About the Past?

Just curiosity to see if there's any logical reason why.

And nah, it's not just about Bledsoe. In the Brisby thread, there were a few remarks which seemed to me to indicate that some people thought talking about players from the past was a waste of time.

Threads dealing with Patriots' history pre-2001 will usually get a few people coming in and saying the past was crap because they weren't winners.
They were winners the day they squished the fish, kicked the game winner in the snow plow game, and Kevin Turner caught the game winner against the mighty Vikings.

Period. But if you weren't there, you weren't there. Some people don't want to acknowledge things that came before they did. Too bad because it's very limiting. It's like walking around with blinders on.

Pats had a fine winning team in the 60s just (like in the 21st century) ran into the San Diego juggernaught.

And nobody here should neglect to mention the excellent 70s team screwed out of a SuperBowl by a series of non-calls on Raider fouls like holding Russ Francis from behind on both arms such that on 3rd down a 1st down pass bounced off his chest, followed by a phantom RTP call (by the standards of the day). Contract strife and team mismanagement threw sand in the gears following a brief peek at excellence.

See, I love hearing about this stuff.... at 32, I'm only barely old enough (!) to remember the team in their Pat Patriot uniforms.

I love hearing the stories of the team from 60-89 (1990 was the first year I can really remember paying attention to).

Because "talking about the past" would create an incredibly lame forum.

"Remember X, Y, and Z.....?.....yeah....that was awesome."

Stuff from the past is appreciated through film and extended written pieces. On a board like this, it can be useful to say something now reminds you of this or that from before. But "talking about the past?" Just lame.

Its a lack of imagination in sports today which bothers me. Everyone is compared to someone who has already had success. Growing up Yaz was Yas. Rice was Rice. Bourque was Bourque.

With all due respect, I call BS on this.

Yaz was CONSTANTLY being compared to Teddy Ballgame.

Rice's fielding off the Green Monster was CONSTANTLY being compared to that of Yaz'.

Bourque was CONSTANTLY being complimented with "Yeah, he's very good, but there'll never be another Bobby".

Methinks your memory is highly selective.

Call it what you want. The comparison game is played way more now than it was 20 years ago. Sure they were there but not like they are today. If you look at the Celtics of the 80's you didn't hear every other week the team being compared to the Celtics of the 60's as the measure. Yes i heard the Russell Bird comparisons then and again but not under the microscope that they are today. People were just happy they had a winner and they loved Bird and crew.

Wouldn't be the first time I was told my memory was selective. Me thinks it's a good thing some times that I can tune out the constant babbling going around me.

Really? I thought it was a common theme whenever Bird's level of impact to the franchise was discussed. I don't know how many Bird versus Russel arguments I heard over the years. Hundreds?

What themes have you heard here too often?

Exatly, BR.

I'm beginning to think PatriotMissile is too young to remember the 70's and 80's. Anyone around then can easily remember the comparisons that abounded.

I would think the dislike or struggle if any would emanate from the tendancy of some to romanticize past failures as well qualifying or quantifying successes while eviscerating anything short of a Lombardi run (from year to year to game to game to play to play) where the present day team(s) are considered. Not to mention the air of entitlement that has been fostered here in the last decade or so. But then I imagine if there had been message boards as active as this and 24/7 media and fantasy football in those bygone eras a lot otherwise wonderful memories would have also been reshaped over time.

The games all end up blending together, but the memories of the players withstand.
Jim Plunket....the pocket collapsing and JP going into one of those mad scrambles that might carry him 30 yds behind the LOS
Steve Grogan....my guy.....4th and 1.....naked bootleg for 50 yds?
And OJ Simpson......Pats D in super slo-mo trying to tackle the Juice as he put up what seemed like 200 yds every time they played

I don't like talking about it cause I wasn't there. So I wouldn't know what I'm talking about anyway. I tend to steer clear of it when I see it because a lot of the time I have no clue who people are talking about unless they are really big name past Patriots. And even then I never saw them play so I can't concur or disagree with statements made. I don't get mad about it though or even say anything for that matter. But sometimes it does make me feel a bit left out. Like two friends with an inside joke and they won't tell you what it is at all, they only keep laughing and it makes you feel stupid being around them.

No question, OJ murdered our Pats that day
