Re: Backup QB Situation

Where is 010405 at tonight?

He had a temper tantrum again last night or this morning I believe.. Said he wouldn't come back until we were gone.

It's sad, he was really fun to... engage. Trolled himself right out of the forum though.

After watching Mallet tonight, I'm thinking that Tebow may be a lock to make this team.

That's not a joke, either. I haven't seen anything in Mallet to make me believe he's had any progress in his mechanics or reading of defenses and, at this point, Tebow at least makes the defensive coordinator of the opposing team have to develop a game plan against him.

We'll see after this last pre season game, but that's how I see things.

The Broncos were a doormat for a reason. They have upgraded their roster since 2011, but when Tebow took over Eric Decker was the #1 WR. Daniel Fells, an average player, was the go-to TE. By mid-season a RB named Jeremiah Johnson was taking time off from shooting buffalo in Civil War era Colorado to play WR. The defense finished the season ranked in the lower half of the league. And they were getting blown up at the line of scrimmage. The running game was ranked #21st in the league after 5 games. Tebow & the read-option not only gave them the #1 ground game by Week 10 but it allowed the O-line to block downhill and was the invisible hand in all of the close victories where the opponent looked worn down at the end.

I know, I know, It's A Passing League and Tebow Sucks and it was really Chinese Voodoo Vibes or a religious miracle that they turned the season around, because having a running game doesn't matter anymore. But if you're gonna bash a guy, don't base it on revisionist history.

I wasn't bashing anybody.

I think it's revisionist history to say the Broncos were a bad football team that Tim singlehandedly turned around. They were underachievers, yes. But still had talent on both sides of the ball.

That was a revolting display of "football" tonight. We'll see what this means for the roster in the coming days.

I thought we might see some Tim in goal line spots tonight but I guess that isn't the plan for him.

If they do plan on using him like that I don't see BB showing his hand in a blowout preseason loss. Same with TT on the punt team as the personal protector. There is no reason to.. it would be a waste to give it away now.

Re: Re: Why did this team sign Tebow?

We get a good (or ugly) long look at him in a week since I doubt Mallet plays more than a quarter/half (what's the usual? I never paid much attention to preseason before)

Hopefully we see more of the read-option package, as Tebow playing as a pocket passer against TB was painful to watch.

Last year Mallett played entire 4th game, I would say they will each play a half.

To be honest my thought with Tebow is his confidence is shot at this point so until they rebuild it putting him out there to be scrutinized by the media is counterproductive to everything they're doing at practice.

I've said this since the first day Tebow was signed and I will say it again right now, he will not be cut but he will not be on the 53 man roster either, even if Belichick needs to take a hammer to his arm they will find a way to IR him for 2013 and develop him behind the scenes.

That was true 2-3 years ago. No objective reason to think that is true today.

You might be right. I believe they have a plan for him. Maybe Im impatient but it would be nice to see it soon.

He could just "break" his leg like he did in high school. Dude pulled a Youngblood and won a game. They could just have the team doctor come out the day before cuts and say Tim broke his leg and played through the pain.

That's to bad; I love 010405, admittedly he is a feisty one but he is actually on point with his football knowledge when he is having a non Tebow conversation. I hope trolls his way back soon.

I don't think there is a plan for him.

Don't get excited I haven't been converted but I will say I'd like to see them give him a shot at FB this week during practice and in the final game, if he can be productive with his carries we may have something to discuss. At the very least having him in the backfield with Brady could cause some confusion in 4th & 1 situations.

I checked with PFR and it is indeed 5. Probably a miscount on my part. But 5 is still not that bad considering the circumstances.

And yes I was plenty old enough to watch the NFL back then. I remember the 1976 Ben Dreith screwjob as clear as day. And I watched Young and I saw a promising young QB playing on a REALLY bad football team. The difference between that Bucs team and the 11 Broncos was that Broncos had talent on both sides of the ball. They had a good mix of youth and experience on that defense, receivers that were better than many in the league, a solid OL and a talented running game. The Broncos were not playing well for whatever reason. The Bucs had little talent and weren't playing well as teams with no talent are wont to do.

And let's stop making the Tebow-Young projection, that is wishful thinking and nothing else. There is no evidence at this point in time that Tim is the next Steve Young, nor that he's even worthy to carry his jock strap.

Hehehhe, funny post. No more mention of Tebow being an old journeyman QB while Young looked like a young QB trying to develop ?

The one thing you are right about in your post is that there is no evidence at this time that Tim is the next Steve Young. That's absolutely correct. It's the FUTURE, which means that it is unknown. There's a remote chance that he might be. Or perhaps he might only be 75% the QB that Steve Young was. Or 50%. Or he might completely wash out.

Then again, the same thing can be said about every QB who gets drafted or is being "developed". With Tebow, the cost is low, around league minimum. Only real cost would be a roster spot. IF, IF, IF Bill and Josh see something there, they might decide that it's worth investing the time, dollars and roster spot.

Nobody can singlehandedly turn a team around. I think the #1 factor was that having a popular QB who could not be effective at anything besides the spread-O, the coaches were forced to put it in, and the league couldn't consistently stop it. Remember that in 2011 everyone was still saying the option could never work in the pros because the defenses were too big and fast. People later realized that the offenses were bigger and faster, too.

Tebow's motivational leadership and the momentum of finally getting out of the cellar pushed the defense to get better. It wasn't singlehanded but the unorthodox, smash-mouth playbook/QB was definitely a catalyst.

At this point I'd be happy if we could get one more season out of Mallett as a backup and then trade him for like a 5th round pick. 2 seasons of a backup QB and a 5th rounder is decent value for a 3rd round pick.

The better than a 3rd round in compensation ship has sailed and sunk however.

He's channeling his inner Cartman.

He may require a couple days of meditation before he returns.

That's garbage. That defense was good only when they played a bad team. You know in that run the didn't beat a single team over .500 right? How did they do against the lions? Patriots twice? How come tim pushed the defense to get better only against such great teams as the Jets, Chiefs, raiders, chargers, bears but couldn't do the same against the better offenses?

I'll answer for you. Because he didn't change a thing, they hit the easy part of the schedule, beat a bunch of crappy teams lost to the good ones and ended the same way they started the season 1-4. And they didn't win the AFC west, they sat at home needing San Diego to lose, which thy did.

8-8 and they win on a tie breaker. Whose the revisionist history guy?

What's wrong with Tebow starts in his head, the last 2+ seasons have beat him down mentally I know that isn't a bone or ligament but it does take time to heal, when I first came back from Iraq it took me almost 2 years to figure out how to reassembles myself mentally, I think a year on IR being around a winning franchise, great coaches and a QB like Brady all while out of the media spotlight is exactly what Tim needs. He can rebuild mentally work on his game and have a true chance to succeed in 2014.

Details are parts of the whole, but I've noticed when guys who trash TT get corrected on them, they can always come back to "Tebow sucks and that's it." Popular opinion outweighs facts.

*Disclaimer* -- I have liked the Pats since the 90s, I wouldn't start Tebow over Brady, I'm not a jorts-wearing Bible thumper, and I hope the Pats are great this year. I post/write/comment about TT a lot b/c the phenomenon is fascinating from a football perspective, especially vis-a-vis the fans. A relatively small group who think a guy is Jesus, a larger group (that claims endlessly to be the smaller group) who forgot football history & strategy to the point where they really think a poser with absolutely no talent or throwing ability could start at QB in the NFL and win 9 out of 16 games.

Nobody will ever deny Tebow has heart.
