Although Mallett may have three years experience and has been the Brady backup for two seasons, Belichick isn't afraid to name a rookie the backup to Brady. In 2009, Hoyer backed up Brady as an undrafted rookie.

While most of us will agree that last season would have been a 5-11/6-10 trainwreck if Brady went down, the backup QB position is important this season. If the defense performs like we all think it will, the Pats could realistically still win the division if the worst case happened and Mallett or Garoppolo had to QB the team.

IMO, Garoppolo will win the job as he is a much better fit with this offense between the quick release, accuracy on short-intermediate throws, and pocket mobility. I'm not sure if BB would cut Mallett in this case or keep him as the 3rd QB.

Garoppolo because he can actually make short passes and have some touch & control on what he does.

Mallett would be ideal for the Vikings because of the system Norv Turner runs. The nature of the Patriots system just doesn't seem ideal for him.

Garoppolo wins it just because he is younger. Mallett is getting old, I think the patriots want Garoppolo to win it. But they will keep Mallett just incase he is a bust.

Mallett is 25, that's old?

Old enough where I would not keep him as a backup. He has not hade real game experience besides pre season in a long time. I rater have Garoppolo he is younger and has played in more games then Mallett has in the past 4 years.

Does that make 2008 Matt Cassel the worst backup ever, then?

If he isn't traded by the end of camp, Mallet. More knowledge of NFL game and more experience with the offense.

I'll refrain from voting because i don't know enough about Jimmy. This will be a fun battle. Training camp will be defined by the WR, backup QB and o-line battle for positions and playing time

Just going by the news stories and not knowing too much detail about it I would say Garo as well.

I never said it made them worse I said it makes then cold to game experience.

I voted for Mallet, but I will be rooting for Garapollo. It will be a fair competition and Mallet starts knowing the offense, so I won't be surprised if he holds off the rookie. That said, Garapollo winning the competition is a good sign.

Is it possible that Mallett might simply be better at this point? If so does it make sense to keep him?

I was thinking about this topic recently and believe Garoppolo will win it. I can see Mallett not being on the 53-man roster and opening a spot at another position (maybe CB?).

Of course they might just trade him for a 1st rounder, too.

Mallett is clearly much better "at this point". The situation might (or might not) be different after the 2nd preseason game.

I think that I am a pretty astute observer of QB play.
That said I haven't clue. Nobody has seen JAG play at this level. The who is #2 question is a function of training camp performance since neither has any real NFL game experience.
Me, I'll be rooting for JAG so that he's not a wasted pick like that stupid mick O'Connell.
